It seems RE5 will taper off at around 430,000. I expected more, considering DMC4 did about 330,000 in Japan and you have a longer install base since DMC4 came out last year Feb 08. Oh well. Good enough is good enough.

More interestingly there is a smaller gap between the 360 versions, which is really surprising since DMC4 did about 50,000 on 360, and RE5 did about 70,000.

I thought the 360 sold quite decently (relatively speaking) since that year time frame. I really expected the 360 version of RE5 to make a significant 100,000+ dent in Japan. Especially when you see how well Star Ocean 4 sold in Japan on the 360.

With the 360 version though, it'll be around 600K, which is the bare minimum for a series main installment when you consider all platforms. The budget versions of the game should sell briskly when they're introduced later this year or early next year.

Biohazard 4 made it to a million in Japan GC+PS2+Wii.

Do you really think that it will only sell 430k lifetime? Or we do we have different definitions of taper off?

I suspect we'll get an update on PS2 RE4 (BEST Reprint) when the PS2 Top 10 for March is posted. MGS3 (BEST) got a boost with MGS4, and DMC3:SE (BEST) got a boost with DMC4.

No it won't. The 360 version sold 79,000 and then left into oblivion an hour later.

Also, Capcom said they shipped 5 million units -- I don't think they are going to have many secondary shipments since they have a lot of time to burn through that 5 million. Even if Japan only received a fifth of that, that's a still a long ways to go.

In Japan when a games is done, it's done. The rest of the sales are usually second-hand which are extremely rampant and profound after the first couple of weeks. That's why Japan constantly has these re-releases and shit.

I hope to god it made it to a million with Capcom releasing re-releasing the game on every goddamn console, cell phone, gambling machine in existence :lol Not realy much of a feat though, I'd expect any game could post decent numbers if you continue to add version on top of version on top of version.

But Re5 will not achieve this, the market has changed and don't commit suicide or anything CVXfreak, but Re4 was -vastly- better than Re5 (well, at least in my opinion). I do think the game will sell more than Re4 in the Western market but not in Japan. No way.

It was at 93K through last week in Famitsu. 100K is pretty much guaranteed. Even if the combined PS360 weekly total tapers off stronger than expected from here on out, the total should still be > 575K (Famitsu), at least.

Oh, I did not know that. I for some reason thought the 360 version did 70,000. Maybe that's what DMC4/Dead Rising/Lost Planet (one of those) did and I'm getting the numbers mixed up.

But I don't see how 430,000 + 100,000 gives you over 600,000. And I really don't think the game will be charted much longer. 29,000 is pretty much the swan song before the numbers become insignificant. If any other game on these charts is any indication. (see: Yakuza 3, game took a nose-dive once it reached that sub 30,000 figure)

It was 79K first week in Media-Create and Famitsu. Dead Rising (just the base release) did 68K, so maybe that's what you're thinking of. The other two sold under that total.

Oh, 79,000 for Re5, than I'm pretty much right then. You're not going to bust my nut for being 9,000 off now are you? But then again this is Japan, so 10 units makes a big deal :lol

It was 4 million units dude. C'mon, it didn't surpass the crowning jewel that is RE2 yet, you should be happy. :p

In Japan when a games is done, it's done. The rest of the sales are usually second-hand which are extremely rampant and profound after the first couple of weeks. That's why Japan constantly has these re-releases and shit.

Biohazard games for the last few years have increased their sales "behind the scenes" so to speak. Biohazard 0 on the Wii managed to make it to 80K after falling out of the charts at around 45K.

I hope to fuckin' god it made it to a million with Capcom releasing re-releasing the game on every goddamn console, cell phone, gambling machine in existence :lol Not realy much of a feat though, I'd expect any game could post decent numbers if you continue to add version on top of version on top of version.

Actually, RE4's ability to get to a million in Japan by spreading its sales across multiple versions is pretty unusual. Usually ports don't bring a whole lot of sales to the total, certainly not enough to bring the series to a number like 1 Million.

But Re5 will not achieve this, the market has changed and don't commit suicide or anything CVXfreak, but Re4 was -vastly- better than Re5 (well, at least in my opinion). I do think the game will sell more than Re4 in the Western market but not in Japan. No way.

I think so too, but RE5 has so far blown past RE4 in a similar time frame. It's unlikely for RE5 to hit a million without a Wii version, though. Still, RE5 sales are excellent.

Nah....let him dwell on the idea that deal made was as straightforward as Microsoft guaranteeing SE that their games would sell millions if they were on the 360.:lol

PS360 RE5 has been tracking pretty close to RE2's percentage drops, so let's use that on just the PS3 version to compare.

Percentage compared to the first week total:

PS1 RE2 - 100 -> 18 -> 9 -> 5 -> 4 -> 2 -> 2 -> ...
PS3 RE5 - 100 -> 19 -> 9

RE2 sold 17% of its LTD after its third week. If the PS3 RE5 is currently at 83% of its LTD like RE2 was after three weeks, then it would get to 498K. Even assuming lesser legs than RE2, 475K seems pretty certain.

Greater than 600K? Probably not.
Close to 600K? Pretty likely.

cvxfreak said:

Not happening. The fact of the matter is that RE is way past it's golden age in Japan. And the only way Capcom can seemingly get it to 'decent' sales is to do what they did with RE4 and put it on everything that registers 0's and 1's. From a cell-phone to game gear to the Wii, PS3, 360, PS2, PS1, N-gage, Narnia-Machine 3000 etc. etc.

The way I see it, is that games taper off in Japan really quick. You seem to be alluding to games like RE0 that went from 45,000 to 80,000 (although I don't see the evidence for this) but I'm sure many other games do these "behind the scene" magical trickeries you speak of.

Regardless, I see Re5 at below 430,000 on PS3 -- and the 360 version at below 110,000 -- knowing the JPN market, the used game sale market, the fact that more hardcore games like these are front-loaded in sales, I don't see how that translates to over 600,000.

Like I said, in Japan -- RE has taken like an 75% (percentage pulled from my ass, but a large number nonetheless) nosedive in sales compared to the better days of Resident Evil.

Which would be RE2. 2nd greatest game ever made :D And the king, always will be.

I'd agree more with this post than CVX's. Yes, RE4 did decent but how many ports did it need, how many re-releases. As is, on the 360 and PS3 RE5 will not break 600,000 in Japan. If Capcom puts it on the Wii, yes -- it should be able to it 400,000 especially if it's budget priced and you'd get closer to a million. But the market/economy was different during RE2's time. Console gaming was in it's golden age, not so much anymore.

It's not a question of whether RE5 will have weaker legs than RE2, it's a matter of fact that it will have weaker legs. No question.

PS2 RE:CVX added ~75% to the LTD from the DC version. Porting from a lesser platform to a more successful one probably helps a lot.

The 360 version dropping off so quickly along with the PS3 version not showing unexpected legs makes me question above 600K, but I can definitely see it getting close to 600K.

Edit:
Unless you're going by Dengeki totals, in which case it could hit 600K next week. :lol

You're absolutely right that games are usually quite front-loaded, but that doesn't mean uncharting games sell insignificant amounts. Take MGS 4, which was under 20k by week four, at 10k in week five, and out of the top 30 in week eight. That's very much the trajectory RE 5 is following. Yet within the five months after its last chart appearance, MGS 4 added 65k copies to its total.

Yeah, I'd like proof for that RE0 "behind the scenes" statement CVX made as well. Furthermore, Porting RE games was a trend that only started when the RE games started selling drastically less. Re-releases were common, and there were ports of the earlier RE games much later (during the gamecube era) but assuming the magic of porting that worked for RE4 wouldn't work for other RE games is a stretch, simply because other than RE:CV, there wasn't really a big port from one system to a more successful system. RE4 went from least successful, to most successful. RE2 did port onto the N64, but there problems with the port, and that's going from PS2 to N64, a weaker console sales wise. So really, the case with RE4 is unique simply because it's unique, Capcom hasn't replicated that sales and business prospective with any other RE game (with the exception of what donny pointed out, RE:CV, in which it was successful.)

Did you know, that Killzone 2 took an 56.8% impartial increase in sales in Japan after 6 pm, while decreasing with a slope ratio of 1/[max] km of sales in regards to Vmax before 6 pm. It's true, I have a link in my cookie cache.

Look, I'm just asking for a link/proof -- regardless if it's believable or not.

I'm not trying to hide behind %s. (RE4: Wii dropped off the charts at 81K, and its last known LTD in Famitsu was 135K.) I'd just like the link, so that I can update my numbers. :p

Not really "fad over," but the long stream of pretty solid exclusives has dried up. Probably won't happen again this year, unless Microsoft has some big announcements up their sleeves for Japan.

The fad might have dried up seeing there isn't any bog named Japanese titles coming out for the rest of the year or at least to this point announced yet, but you never know MS like to ink deals in the background. Sony has FF13demo and maybe FF13 for this year.

It's going to happen. I'll buy myself two copies of DMC2 and torture myself if it doesn't. I will consider all the sales-trackers too. If one of them shows RE5 above 600K between the 360 and PS3 version before re-releases, then I'll be right.

Again, your lame hyperbole aside, RE4's ability to be a million seller through Capcom's good use of console spread and budget pricing is certainly no negative. Nor did I ever actually say it was anything close to the PSone days. No way. My original point was that RE sales seemed to have reached a stabilization point.

BTW, as of last week, Biohazard 5 sold 427,163 on PS3 and 103,382 on 360 according to Dengeki. That's about 530,000. :D :D :D

Regardless, I see Re5 at below 430,000 on PS3 -- and the 360 version at below 110,000 -- knowing the JPN market, the used game sale market, the fact that more hardcore games like these are front-loaded in sales, I don't see how that translates to over 600,000.

I just told you that RE sales can be dragged on for months. Want proof? Check this post out with updated Dengeki totals. It's a post without tangible proof, but at this point we have few reasons to doubt it. Even then, I have more examples to quote for the series in recent years:

1. As donny said above, Biohazard 4 Wii Edition sold 54K out of its 135K pre-budget LTD outside the Top 30.

2. Biohazard 4 Wii Edition Best Price never ever made it to the Top 30 on Famitsu, yet has a (now outdated) sales total of 40,612 (game number 72, Famitsu numbers).

3. Biohazard Deadly Silence Best Price debuted somewhere in the bottom of the Top 50 at the beginning of 2007, but managed to sell up to 47,895 by Media Create's numbers, game #283. This version too effectively doubled the game's LTD.

4. Umbrella Chronicles debuted at 104,960 via Famitsu and ended up at 273,391. It was off the charts after about 1.5 months. Link.

5. Biohazard 0 on GameCube sold 50K out of it's 400K total after it left Famitsu's Top 30 in January 2003. Link. That's 12.5%. I wonder what adding 12.5% to the PS3 Biohazard 5's total once it's out of the top 30 would become.

6. Biohazard Outbreak File #2 sold 172,581 in all of 2004 (which was a 4 month period). In 2005, despite getting no re-releases, it sold another 41,300 copies (Link.

None of the above examples can be truly analogous to Biohazard 5 since the circumstances for each are pretty different. But my earlier statement of some Biohazard games having decent legs stands. I've seen enough data on the Biohazard games long enough to be comfortable with my assertions. If you don't want to agree with them, then we'll just have to wait until the time comes for us to confirm who is right and wrong.

Biohazard 5, 600K or bust, for me.

Thanks for posting the PS2 number! 136.3 million through Dec-08 DS should pass up that number in a couple of years. Of course, it'll be with the DSi, and we'll be in another GB/GBC shipment situation. :lol
