Media Create Sales: 08/25 - 08/31

Do they still do those? I checked what the last Nintendo-published Japanese GBA game that charted was, and it was... Rhythm Tengoku, two years ago.

The last GBA game that charted was FFVI in Dec 06, but we got updates on 9 GBA games at the end of 2007. A GBA re-release of Rhythm Tengoku advertised as playable on the DS could do pretty well following RTGold's reception.

Edit:
While we're waiting, here's the Media-Create blurb from last week.

"Total sales of the Top 100 titles this week is 711,453, 71.95% of last week, and 70.00% of the average weekly total. Obon period is over. Software is down 277K from last week and this is the lowest hardware total for the year. Incidentally during the same period last year, "Samurai Warriors 2: Xtreme Legends" and "Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates" were new and leading the weekly total to over 1 million units, but there are no such big games this year leading to lower total sales.

Nine new titles rank this week capturing 28.35% of the sales. "J-League Winning Eleven 2008 Club Championship" gains first place selling 79K. PS3 and the series moving to Next-Gen machines affected the sales compared to the August 2007 release of last year's version. This year's version sold about half of last year's debut."

For those decrying the Wii's performance this year compared to last, I find it very likely that the Wii will not drop as severely in September as last year. Last year, the Wii had a precipitous drop from Obon on. This year, it's much more consistent week on week. September should be pretty interesting, though, if the 360's increased supply leads to more consoles actually being sold.

I guess the DS got bored of letting the competiton take over and taste victory.

PSP should be proud of the time it was ahead, even if it won't matter in the least in the bigger scope of things.

Media-Create blurb:

"Total sales of the Top 100 titles this week is 726,143, 102.06% of last week, and 72.03% of the average weekly total. Rhythm Tengoku Gold sold 76K and has its second week in August at #1. Total sales of 600K have been brisk.

There were 15 new releases this week. Afrika, a big pre-launch title, sold 38K. This "light" title can expand the image of the PS3 to more non-core users. Fate/Tiger Colosseum Upper (34K) and Battlefield: Bad Company (26K) sold relatively well, but there is missing a title to sell 100K this week. Because of that, the new game percentage is lower (22.74%)."

Pretty much.

It can be shown that the red line is always turning in the direction of the other line. So, DS is still losing some LTD hardware shares every week.

Going by the NPD month, the PS3 just squeaked out a victory over the 360 in August.

PS3 - 39,861
360 - 38,995

Here's the rest of them:
August 2008 monthly MC hardware numbers. Covers Aug 4 - Aug 31:

DS - 251,534
PSP - 212,182
Wii - 162,470
PS3 - 39,861
360 - 38,995
PS2 - 35,901

Bummer for Tales just missing the top 30. Although the 360 did finally manage to beat the PS2 for the month.

Where is my its gonna take certain amount of time for catchup analysis? With that sort of lead though, the PS3 is no where close to saving in japan compared to what the Wii is doin.

As long as it gets outsold on a consistent basis it won't ever happen.

I'm pretty surprised to see Clannad bomb so bad. You'd think it'd do better what with the television revival and the fact that the original version sold over 100k and the semi-sequel did almost 50k.

Using the latest Media Create numbers...

DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 57.5 / 42.5 bring total shares to 69.4 / 30.6. If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 312.9 weeks (August 31, 2014).

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares of 21.5 / 78.5 bring total shares to 25.5 / 74.5. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 449.7 weeks (April 15, 2017).

X360 vs PS3: Weekly shares of 24.2 / 75.8 bring total shares to 21.9 / 78.1. If PS3 stopped selling and X360 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 527.9 weeks (October 14, 2018).

And here's something I think might be an interesting thing to do pretty regularly, even if this week it's most notable for being pretty boring. By doing a line graph for just two weeks with all the current systems, we can see the week over week change. This week most things are remarkably flat. PSP sticks out, but it's still less than a 10% drop.
X360

Using the latest Famitsu numbers...

PSP comparisons: After 194 weeks, PSP is where PS2 was at 147.5 weeks (December 25, 2002), where DS was at 88.2 weeks (August 7, 2006), and where GBA was at 124.2 weeks (August 4, 2003).

PS3 comparisons: After 94 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 21.0 weeks (July 22, 2000), where PSP was at 53.0 weeks (December 11, 2005), where GCN was at 99.7 weeks (August 7, 2003), and where Wii was at 23.0 weeks (May 5, 2007).

Wii comparisons: After 91 weeks, Wii is where GBA was at 88.9 weeks (November 30, 2002), where DS was at 69.7 weeks (March 30, 2006), where PS2 was at 97.0 weeks (January 6, 2002), and where PSP was at 151.7 weeks (November 2, 2007).

Software stuff in a bit.

EDIT: Not much worth saying about software that isn't rehash. Fatal Frame continues to behave like a middling Fatal Frame, Mario Kart Wii continues to be huge, Rhythm Tengoku Gold continues to loom over its predecessor, yada yada yada.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Woa look at that, Fatal Frame still in the top 50. Niiiiice. Despite its early issues, will likely end up near or better than best selling in the series.

Localize now k thx bye.

Right now? Not that many.

I kind of like to think that a bald(ur) space marine action w-rpg has it's own in-built niche audience in Japan just as their rpgs have in the west.

You know, the first to 50K is the winner, and X360 in Japan has proven that point. Worlwide, it is first to 10 Million, but in Japan, it is first to 50K.

Yeah, I am joking

Almost a certainty to be westernised I'd say. As it's the only game of it's type on the Wii it's going to have the market to itself.

Thanks! :)

Let's take a look at the consoles then. Unfortunately, Famitsu combined the week of Tales of Vesperia with the week after. That makes the software spike much less spiky, but for hardware I used the leaked numbers.

Where is there any indication that it bombed? The first season of the TV finished months ago, and the second TV season has yet to air. The 360 game pretty much hit right during the lull. Not to mention the PSP version came out a month before it (it sold ~26K), most likely cutting into its sales. If the 360 version sells about 10K lifetime, it did pretty good for a third-time console ADV port.

And I hope you're not seriously comparing a thrice-latter port to the initial PC sales when the game was first released. Even the PC Full Voice re-release earlier in the year barely sold over 10K. You can only sell the same game to the same crowd so many times... at least the 360 version has 720P, 5.1 Dolby Digital and DLC to attract consumers, instead of being a straight port like the other versions.

Why so mean? It looks good so far.

It seems the Xbox 360 is back to 3k sales. The ds is on top again and the psp is doing well. The wii could have done better, but I guess it's doing okay without many new (worthy) releases as of late.

Shortage + officially announced price drop is the reason for it being back down to 3k. The week of 9/8-9/14 will change things and this time it may not be for just a week. I don't think it would have been for just a week this time had they not had a shortage. The week we are in now will be one of the worst for the 360, due to the upcoming price drop. I predict less than 1k units.

So here are some figures from Capcom's Jun Takeuchi's Gamefest 2008 keynote, which I though this would be of interest here. Pardon me if these numbers are all known already :
