Traditionally, Western made games have not done very well at all in Japan.

though, wouldn't some of you agree that LBP is not necessarily a "traditional" western game? its that line of thinking which gives me some confidence in the title.

is this sky crawler's debut week? looks like a bomba :(

Looks that way. I bought a copy, but there weren't that many in the store and I doubt it sold well at all. Virtually no hype, no real advertising, etc. Not sure what they were expecting. I hate to say it, but it seems like all the months of shovelware and family games for the Wii didn't do anything for the userbase. I wouldn't be surprised if Tenchu 4 ends up in the same boat.

Isn't there a new PS3 bundle on it's way to Japan?

Yup.SCEJ announced that it would release the new 80GB PS3 with DS3 controller on Thursday October 30th, at a (RRP) of 39,980 yen (including tax). The 80GB PS3 system will come in three basic colors of Clear Black, Ceramic White, and Satin Silver. As a limited offer for the holiday season, it will come bundled with the Blu-ray Disc version of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III for PS3 .

Along with the launch of this new model “PLAYSTATION 3 LittleBigPlanet Dream Box” bundle pack will be introduced at a RRP of 44,980 yen, comprising 80GB PS3 with DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller, LittleBigPlanet game, and an additional DUALSHOCK wireless controller.

This new bundle was the best chance Sony had to drop the price but they are just going to blow the opportunity. PS3 will be dead in the water post-Christmas.

yes the ps3 is as dead as it can be but we saw it coming since $599....

the most intriguing part is that the 360 has established itself at a consistent rate of 7k-8k per week based on perseption and not on a particular game being released.

it is still a losing console in japan but man, to bring a product back from the dead can't be an easy task... besides it may be worth the investment if microsoft asures japanese gamers that the same level of japan centric games will appear in their next console.

I like it when they do that.
It's gonna be interesting to see what happens because of the bundles / bundle announcements being staggered. Next week's 360 may drop a bit if enough people noticed the Ace Combat / Katamari bundle.

Either way, November is when the sales start increasing across the board -- the big question is how the economy will weigh in this year. The situation seems to get worse on a daily basis, and I wonder just how much consumers will be able to weather the storm.

Shipment was only 12k, so they weren't expecting much.

The clear winners will be lower priced hardware (used, handhelds, wii).

If you look at the YOY charts, which you posted and I chart got, you'll notice the uncanny line matching up with the Wii from 2008 to 2007. 360 is clearly different (but still goes up), but the PS3 defies them both: it goes down when it wasn't supposed to. Last week was supposed to be the low point.

Here's my prediction for PS3 sales over the next three weeks:
3800
12999
10000

Don't disappoint me, Japan.

You realize that the PS3 has never yet seen a 100k week even once yet, right? (according to both Famitsu and Media Create, thank you JoshuaJSlone for the data)

Is there any reason why the Wii seems to be selling slightly better this year in the past few weeks than last year, if I read your charts correctly?

We're really talking about the difference of 1500-5000 per week difference, if that's what you mean by slightly.

^:lol good point. :(

I think just staring at the regular red 360 controller is far more compelling than that .gif, honestly. Once you see that permanent frown of despair, staring back at you with the one crossed-out eye, you know you'll never be the same. You have to start treating these things with respect.

Has Sony hit the panic button yet? :O
They hit that quite a while I think, around the time of the PSP 2000, if not sooner.

They better have adopted the old Nintendo Hardware strategy, and made it so they are charging more for the system then it costs for the PSP 3000, or else they must really be panicking that there system is selling like hot cakes but no software is being sold.

Wow, that's a great bundle. I wonder if there's a chance they'll do that for the US too.

Edit: Also, now I can't unsee the sad face either.

Yes, it will be very interesting to see what kind of role the worldwide economy collapse plays into this. This may be the worst economic meltdown in our generation and will be a good test to see if the video game industry is truly recession proof.
