Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
So chances Chrono will reach 500k now are much slimmer eh? Not even at 400k yet and already out of top 10

Games typically double their first week sales. A strong exception to that is non-Dragon Quest RPGs. Doubling Chrono Trigger's first week would be 550K, so I say it still has a decent shot of reaching 500K LTD.

we only get shipment numbers attached to some of the first-day numbers (which didn't include them for klonoa this week) and the recent new leaks, which are absent this week. :(

... but whatever they shipped, 5k is a bomb!

Wasn't Klonoa expected to bomb? Isn't it on the decline?

icecream said:
Because it is. They could have pulled these kinds of numbers on any of the other consoles. The point for releasing on the Wii was it was supposed to pull in bigger numbers.

Perhaps this means a PS3 port in 10 months.

...so because the game sold "okay" it's a bomb (as in it flopped completely)...

And didn't this game out performed their previous game on PS3 by almost 50%? Then again this game had a bigger budget but still. You can't expect such high sales for such a niche genre.

@ donny2112 : the sole point of my post was that sometimes pieces of software I'm interested in don't sell a lot. Wii music and Chun Soft stuff are in that list.

First weeks from Famitsu :

Marvel Vs. Capcom (DC) 62 373
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (DC) 72 388
Capcom Vs. SNK (DC) 143 915
Capcom Vs. SNK 2 (PS2) 168 531

What gets me is that this is a system which has only recently had a massively-successful mascot fighter that isn't too far removed from TvsC. Beyond the core fighing game fans, there's an audience there that should be receptive to something like this but they're just not biting.

Tenbatsu said:
sinobi said it did better than expected, am not sure.

Well, that's kind of positive but a 15k opening day suggests a 25-30k opening week maximum, and given recent weeks where Wii titles have apparently flatlined at the first day figure I'm not even sure of that.

Shame for TvsC. Release it in the west Capcom, we'll show it some love. Good debut for Taiko, how does it compare to previous versions?

Better to compare against the PS2 versions since it is a console game :p
Also, those are terrible numbers for TvC. Hopefully it'll go multi-platform.

Good for Taiko but that's really dissapointing for TvC Wii. It really looks like a solid Wii effort and after watching a few gameplay videos, it should have sold much more :(

A shame, but hopefully it'll have decent legs and sell > 30k first week.

Ouch. That's fucking *terrible* for TvC. I kind of wondered about the strategy of releasing the home port before the arcade version had a little time to endear itself, though.

Horrible holiday season 2008 for Wii software. Maybe, until Dragon Quest x will be released, everything will bomb in Japan. Nintendo has somehow to work on it. A Mario Party is needed as soon as possible. Or a Girl Fashion title. LOL !!

Taiko 6 (december 2005) on PS2 do 14 553 in the first week.
Taiko 7 (december 2006) on PS2 don't enter on the top 30 Famitsu in the first week.

Well, look--different games have different breakeven points, right? I don't have a crystal ball and I'm not going to say "100,000 is the ideal breakeven point for most software!" or any gibberish like that...

... but do you think any software breaks even at 10k? 15k? Maybe text adventures? Probably not Klonoa. Even if you were looking at 50k lifetime I'd probably not have said anything, but 10-15k?

If this project is designed to be profitable, it isn't. If it's designed to promote a future Klonoa Wii title, I'm not sure a 5k audience for a money-losing product is really good advertising bang for buck. Couldn't they put building-sized banners up in Tokyo instead? Wouldn't that be a better primer? ;)

So the decent enough sellthrough just means that Namco realized before launch that this project was going to be a failure rather than after launch. Better than having rotten stock sitting everywhere poisoning your goodwill with retails, but not as good as actually making money!

Well, something has to be done but I’m fucked if I know what. Do Nintendo need to publish more third-party software? Should they be doing more advertising for “core” software? Do they need to buy up more exclusives? Why does something like Fatal Frame 4 succeed in becoming the best-selling instalment in the series when another quality game like TvsC seems destined to be one of the lowest-selling (if not THE lowest-selling) Versus title?

The picture is brighter in the West but Nintendo and third-parties need to figure out how to get traditional software selling well and selling consistently in Japan pretty damn sharpish.

Yeah, I think the main reason is bad or to little marketing, they can't spend that much money like Nintendo on this.

It's not a Nintendo problem, Nintendo titles sell good (except for Captain Rainbow and Wii Music), the problem is for 3rd company titles...

Konami's last baseball game (Pawapuro)
Harvest Moon
Tenchu 4
Rune Factory
Naruto EX2

they really bombed hard, TvC seems like to following them, even if there are just few beat'em ups which sell well (Tekken, Virtua Fighter, probably SFIV), games like Arcana Heart, Melty Blood and Guilty Gear never had great numbers in recent years.

I bet little marketing and the high price of 7340Yen turned off alot of potential buyers for TvC.

Maybe TvsC should have had a console-exclusive Resident Evil character, or some other Capcom character the Wii buyers could relate to. I'd say Zack & Wiki but considering how little the actual game sold I'd hardly imagine the inclusion of those characters pushing a title to any kind of decent sales.

Or hell, just throw Link in there. Personally I'd love to see him fighting (again) in a traditional 2D fighting game alongside the other Capcom characters.

I was about to ask something about that, when Sinobi writes something about "expected" for a game, who is he/she refering to then? Expected from the developer/publisher, the stores, Sinobi himself/herself or from something/someone else? Does anyone know?
