The notes.
Sales of the top 100 titles totaled 2,701,112 units, 66.70% of last week's total and 293.42% of the weekly average. While the results were below those for the previous week, which was boosted by Christmas demand, sales continued to be strong.

Nine new releases took spots in the top 100, accounting for 30.00% of sales. "Brain Training 2," which sold approximately 415,000 units, followed by "Front Mission 5: Scars of the War" and "Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time" sold more than 100,000 units.

The market for existing titles also continued to perform well, with standard titles such as "Animal Crossing: Wild World," "Mario Kart DS," "Kingdom Hearts II," and "DS Training For Adults: Work Your Brain (Brain Training)" selling more than 100,000 units.

Sales during the same week the previous year (Week 5, December) totaled 2,429,473 units. This week's results thus grew year-on-year, amounting to 111.18% of the figure for last year. This year there was a surge in demand for DS software and hardware that exceeded expectations, and this was a factor which invigorated the market.

BTW since I forgot to post the notes for the last chart (12/19-12/25) here they are.
Sales of the top 100 titles totaled 4,049,935 units, 186.94% of last week's total and 457.29% of the weekly average.

Twenty-five new releases took spots in the top 100, accounting for 33.05% of sales. Top-ranked "Kingdom Hearts II" (approximately 728,000 units), followed by "NARUTO: Narutimate Hero 3" and "Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence" delivered strong sales of over 100,000 units and drove the market.

Looking at the market for existing titles, standard DS titles like last week continued to perform well. Titles such as "Animal Crossing: Wild World" and "Mario Kart DS" in particular sold better than they did during the first week after their launches. In conjunction with this, sales of the DS hardware increased, and the strength of Nintendo was clearly apparent during the Christmas sales season.

Sales during the same week the previous year (Week 4, December) totaled 2,801,486 units. This week's results amounted 144.56% of the figure for last year, increasing by approximately 1,248,000 units, and the results during this Christmas season were much stronger than they were last year. While this year launches of new hardware did not have very much of an effect, among the major consoles, DS continued to spread, and it appears that the market for DS is deeper than it was last year.

Quite large drops for the older games (~50-60% of last week as I think I suggested previously), MONSTER performance from BT2, very solid for M&L2 and likely small increases for both older BT games.

But yes, 8 out of the top 10, 6 maybe 7 of them million sellers (just imagine the legs people) and people still keep saying that this isn't impressive?

Never (not even PS / PS2) has a system dominated like this before in Japan, well not since SNES days anyway when there was virtually no competition.

Outstanding.

Anyone else feel that Nintendo shouldn't have released the new Brain Training so soon? Also, are they budget priced?

And great sales all around. KHII dropped by quite a bit, but then again, it did sell over 700k the first week. It'll reach a million by next week. :)

Brain Training 2 will hit 1,000,000. No fucking question. I wonder if it'll start killing BT's sales or if they'll both start taking over the charts. I'll wait until next week, but 2,000,000 might not be too far off a goal.

Animal Crossing might've been sold out. I doubt Mario Kart was, but that's a very good performance. It'll easily break 1,000,000.

Gentle Brain Training should hit 1,000,000 in a few weeks. Kingdom Hearts II is off to a pretty good start. It'll easily outperform the first with international style games.

Had no idea Front Mission 2 was coming out. I think Mario & Luigi 2 might've underperformed. Tamagotchi has a shot at 1,000,000, and SM64 DS and Wario Ware Touched can't be too far behind.

I think Brain Training may have a decent shot of hitting 1.75 million. Animal Crossing should break 2,000,000.

Astounding.

Why must you hurt us? It's ok if we have to wait for Monday though.
Well I guess there's a chance the official Media Create site may update later tonight, now that EG posted the figures. It's hard to say... they're a little random with their update times :)

Can someone post images of this Brain Training game? It doesn't sound like it's any fun.

Think of the best thing ever, like your favorite New York team winning whatever championship every day. Now visualize that experience coming from a video game. That is what Brain Training is like.

I really, really want Tamagotchi to break a million. Then it'll defeat the misconceptions of DS third party games underperforming.

Nuh-uh. Because Nintendo owns part of Bandai and stuff.

Wow.. those software sales are truly a sight to behold..

I think Brain Training 2 came out at the right time. It evidently hasn't cannibalized sales of the original, and they have capitalized on the current BT popularity by releasing the title in December, and just in time to catch some gift-giving-season sales. But if BT2 was instead moved to Summer or Fall of next year, who knows? The craze may die down by then.

I'm much more interested in the forthcoming Language Training games. I hope they develop them with an eventual North American release in mind..

It's edutainment.
The new version has you playing classical compositions with the touch pen too.
It's really addictive stuff, for both gamers and non-gamers... unless you've had a lobotomy.

FFIV and MGS3 sure didnt do so well.

I can almost guarantee that DS sales will be lower than last week. They have to be.

Oh look at that. A couple PSP games made it into the top 30. Good for them.

It's so easy to forget that nintendogs has lasted the longest of all the games so far. In retrospect I'm surprised Jump Superstars or Kirby DS never made it this far.
