It's circular logic. To make an original, they need to establish a foothold in the DS with a port.

It's not really a bomb the way the REmake was. The development for this game, like all DS games, is so cheap that if Japanese sales don't bring in some kind of profit, then sales from everywhere else will.

That was Minoru Nakai's reason actually, but it makes a lot of sense. RE games are fairly expensive to create, and Capcom wouldn't want to waste valuable resources on an original product if the userbase doesn't fit, so they test it with a port. But then it's circular logic because in order to get the best sales, you'll need to explore with an original game. But to make the investment worth it, you should to test the waters with a port. But the waters will never be truly tested unless you have an original title. But then you won't know if the waters work to begin with unless you try a port. Yeah, so Capcom went with the least risky proposition. I think, when future sales are accounted for, Capcom will have enough of an RE fanbase on the DS to work with.

I'm not too concerned with ever getting an original Biohazard on the DS (or PSP) though. It would be very nice to just get the PSone trilogy on there, and maybe the N64 version of Zero that was nearly completed.

I see what you're saying, but testing the market with a game that's been ported and re-released all over the place and anyone who wants to play it already has isn't really testing the market at all. The userbase could be absolutely packed with people who'd absolutely love to buy a new RE game, but Capcom are never going to know even if they think they're testing the waters because these people don't want RE1 again.

They'd do better to try RE3, if they insist on going down that route.
 
As of 2 minutes ago you could not order a DS of any color from the online stores of Yodobashi, BicCamera, Sofmap, and Yamada Denki. I'll go to the store during lunch today to pick up todays games but it looks like DS shortages are still somewhat in effect for the country....

And your statement falls within the circular logic, although to a different degree of implementation. :)

I think RE1 is enough to show that there is a presence of RE fans, and you never know, sales could be stunted thanks to insufficient stock of DS systems as RE is clearly something out of the ordinary for DS fans. RE3 does make far more sense though, and really so does RE2 as that was by far the most popular of all the games. But, at heart this is Capcom's way to celebrating the tenth anniversary of the original RE without having to go all out (they needed biohazard 4 for the holiday season). I think Capcom saw the successes Namco and Nintendo have had with re-releases and tried to do their own. I think Biohazard 2 would do much better, myself.

Fuck. Good thing Konami made up DoS sales in the U.S. But still, seeing Viewtiful Joe bomb doesn't help trying to convince Capcom to put more games like MM on the DS.

I don't think you can really base other companies success (or lack of) in this market compared to Sony. What you have in Sony is a company that completely understands their fanbase and knows how to get them interested in it.

I think it's exactly the opposite. People will buy it for the games. There will be almost NO movies and people won't jump to Sony's proprietary audio until the userbase is sufficient to cause the movie studios to release significant content on UMD. As far as the audio goes, not going with MP3 will probably end up being a HUGE mistake.

However, I think most people will consider it a games device first, with the bonus of offering other functions as well.

In the short term DS will outsell PSP 2 to 1. This will be due to popular handheld software (Mario, Rockman.EXE, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc) as well as lower pricing and a launch headstart. PSP will likely have a higher installed base at the end of it's 10ish year cycle however, partially due to lower pricing accellerating sales/growth but also due to the fact that DS will probably only have 2-4 year lifespan. Neither platform will pass 55 million units total (what GBAs managed in just 4 years) however.

What day of the week did RE DS come out? I wonder how many units it has to sell to be profitable. I can see it stopping betwen 100 and 200k. I figure it'll get a nice boost when the restock takes full effect, and then just peter out.

And wow at Hardware. You have to wonder what the DS would do without the shortage. Even with it, DS is still selling almost twice as much as the number 2 best seller.

And Microsoft... the Xbox360 is so dead... They should be worried, if Revolution has any kind of decent showing in Japan, then they'll have to destroy the it in the rest of the world or else they're going to find themselves in third.

I still wonder how EoN gets more accurate/higher numbers than Media Create/Famitsu

And it makes you wonder, could Animal Crossing/Brain Trainings be the new (Pokemon/FF/DQ) of Japan? ANimal Crossign is doing blinding numbers as well as the Brain Training series.

With DS selling 600k (MAX) in one week with just those games out, I absolutely SHUDDER in glee thinking what Pokemon would do if it were released in the holiday season (in both the US and Japan at the same time)

I'm wondering if between Trozei, Dash, Dungeon and the upcoming Pokemon Ranger, if Nintendo already has a sizable Pokemon fanbase on the DS.

I think Pokemon Diamond and Pearl sales may actually be greater than Pokemon RuSa sales, though. I mean, that seems to be the trend with DS releases of Nintendo franchises versus the GBA ones: (SM64 > SMA1/2/3/4, MKDS > MKA, SMiW > (M)MiW). Only Kirby and Yoshi seemed to have dropped on the DS.
 
There was one thing I was upset about with Nintendo and that was releasing Torouze, Dash, Mysterious Dungeon and Ranger before D & P.

I can understand they want some cash, but Pokemon is their Strongest handheld selling point, THE MAIN GAMES. They should've held off all these spinoffs (except maybe one) until after the real games. Just think of all the anticipation it could have caused for the DS if there were no Pokemon games out for 2 years in Japan? When they were finally released it would blow the roof OFF!

But now they might have saturated the Pokemon fanbase on the DS, with 5 Pokemon games there. Oh well, we'll wait and see

That's a good observation. And I'd say Yoshi and Kirby are outliers -- Yoshi wasn't a "full" game, and Kirby was perhaps too different from previous Kirby games.

Actually, now that you mention it, maybe a lot of Pokémon fans have already bought the DS and the release of Diamond/Pearl won't be as huge a boost as it might have been in the absense of Ranger, Trozei, etc.

I don't know about that. The numbers of the DS Pokemon spin offs have been good...but they aren't astronomical. When Diamond/Pearl come out I truly believe the DS will sell like it has never selled before. I more sold.

Anyway good numbers Nintendo, I expected more from Mario Strikers, maybe we will see a different trend than on PS games in japan:

COnsidering Golf, Tennis, Baseball and Soccer:

In Japan- Sony from best to worst seller: Golf (Minna no Golf), Soccer (Winning Eleven), Baseball (Jikyou) and at last place Tennis (Prince of Tennis?)

Nintendo: Without considering soccer the trend is the exact opposite: Tennis (Mario), Baseball (Mario), Golf (Mario)

I wonder how will Mario Basketball perform?
