And this is the last time we'll see a GBA game.

303 [WII] Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo) 35,231 / 1,002,048

Man, that one sure struggled to get there. I doubt SMG2 will make it.

Wow, Nintendo really dominates...

8 of the top 10, and 18 of the top 25 are on Nintendo platforms
6 of the top 10 are Nintendo games...

FF13 and Monster Hunter broke a million... what else this generation has broken a million that isn't on a Nintendo platform?

The only other non-Nintendo platform million sellers I can envision that aren't Final Fantasy or Monster Hunter are Biohazard 5's various versions, and perhaps Peace Walker if it has good legs.

Actually, maybe not. Don't forget that Famitsu combines the Pokemon games, so their chart may also have FireRed/LeafGreen on it. And this is supposed to be a Top 1000 chart. If Pokemon Black and White can import Pokemon from the GBA games, then I can see their lives getting dragged out for another two years.

GT5 bomba? Or are we only counting third party?

57 [NDS] Animal Crossing: Wild World (Nintendo) 200,978 / 5,150,572

Wow, this ended up at 5 million? Amazing.

I wonder if Friends Collection will end up at Animal Crossing level...

It's possible, but I don't think that one is set in stone. GT4 sold 1,066,749, and only a few PS3 franchises have met their PS2 predecessors' sales. I'll have to see the hype machine that SCE builds for the game closer to release.

Wow, you must be the only person on GAF who agrees with me what GT5 might not sell a million copies in Japan! :lol

Hah. The way I see it, as far as Japan is concerned, the first-third party distinction is becoming meaningless for the PSP, PS3 and 360. SCE may have built a name for itself in the PS1 that carried on into the PS2 era, but those days are long over and their franchises have shown to suffer big drops that we have few reasons to believe can be reversed. SCE is not a developer or publisher that can be placed on any special pedestal anymore. Expect a marketing blitz, some events, a few bundles and SKUs for GT5, but this is so par for the course as far as big games go. I think something like 700-800K is reasonable to predict. And then from there they can release a budget version and maybe cross the line. :lol

If there were a "Nintendo/Super Mario Bros. Company" distinction, then Nintendo would still be #1, Mario Co. would be #4 and Pokemon would be #5. Nintendo would occupy 3 of the top 5. (Mario games = 5,279,859 units in 2009)

So basically we should rename it the Nintendo Games Industry.

Do you say that on a pure sales performance sense or in a general way?

About GT5, I think they can reach one million with a big marketing push. I feel that way because there has been a long waiting for it, and I feel there could be some accumulated hype and curiosity from traditional userbase. A-spec and GT 4 had barely three years and half of difference and maybe the whole userbase were not motivated to jump in.

Not sure, I may be biased, I feel sympathy for troubled projects that get delayed once and again.

Edit: Thanks for the list bttb.

Are you correcting typos? If so, 89 is Nintendo, not Sega.

Certainly not as a publisher of quality games. SCE still does well in that area, even though more and more of their hits are non-Japanese games like GoW or Heavy Rain. That said, there are many high quality developers and publishers these days, so it's not like SCE is much of a standout in that regard, either.

I'm referring more to sales performance, yes. In Japan, only Nintendo stands out as a first party. To even mention SCE as a first party in the same breadth as Nintendo is totally misleading and such expectations will only inflate expectations for games like GT5 and as we saw back in 2008, LBP.

The Last Guardian will sell over a million and save the pride and honor of Sony first part!

Am I doing it right?

Yes, I'm agree with you. But I have enjoyed what SCE Japan has made this generation, I am not sure if they should have tried to be more ambitious, but I really liked Loco Roco, Patapon and Echochrome. I believe there is good talent there.

But no, SCE it´s not in the same breath of Nintendo, they have a good portfolio quality wise, and some good hits checking their global output, but Nintendo is in another league.

Interesting statistics.

Out of curiosity, why did it take nearly four months to throw this together?

because this list is just a portion of a large book that discusses and provides financial analysis for the japanese gaming industry, that book takes a few months to be released, and once it's released, someone (GEIMIN) needs to buy it, transcribe it, and put it online. then someone else needs to make it english for you.

The Wii port of Okami sold fewer copies than the PS2 version sold in 2009? I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Okami is a budget game on the PS2 (and Wii, but less so). Budget games have huge legs. The PS2 version had the whole year to sell barely 1K more than the Wii version.

Now, if you had mentioned RE4 on Wii and PS2, then I would have agreed. :p Japanese gamers are buying the worst version. :(

Pretty good "PS3 the Best" sales, almost on top except for Mingol. The total should be around 250k now.

Regarding "the Best" budget re-releases, there are 13 for PS3, 11 for PS2 and 9 for PSP in the list.

150 [PS3] Atelier Rorona (Gust) 77,404
Aww, 3k short of being the best selling Atelier title since 2001. Still very nice.

I agree with you, but I don't think it'll just sell 500k either (as I think that's your prediction IIRC?), I think 700-800k before re releases is a fair prediction.

IMO, SCEJ has gone downhill every generation since PS1 whereas SCEE and SCEA have gotten better. Talking purely about games development, SCEJ is the weaklink in SCEWWS, they're more than a couple of notches below the other 2 main branches.

EDIT: And thanks BTTB for this thread, really appreciated.
