Remember, this is the market where PSP has been cheapest, DS has never had a price drop, and due to shortages DS/L costs have sometimes been higher than PSP in recent months.

How'd Animal Crossing get so popular? Its been about the same "game" since it was released on N64, no? Has any other game gotten more and more popular with each port released, like AC has?

Animal Crossing just hit that perfect spot on the handheld, and it was online.

As cvxfreak says, it's largely that as a game that has stuff going on all the time, the ability to have it with you all the time is beneficial. Also, it sure doesn't hurt to be on a system with a greater userbase than N64 and GCN combined.

Not quite like Animal Crossing's similar releases, but I might suggest GTA3 as a series that ballooned with a few essential changes. In GTA's case that'd be losing the mandatory overhead view.
