DQ does really well. TtT does pretty well too for what it is.

It's not sudden though - they both slowly made their way up.

That new Gundam game might have had some sort of effect too though.
Gundam has always sold at least decently on PSP, there's clearly a fanbase there - I don't think it had that big of an effect.

Still I can't see why the psp does so well... there are only 4 games in the top 30. Is it some new kind of fetishism?

Unless I'm totally missing it, I don't MGS4 on last week's chart at all, that's kinda an odd jump.

Also I'm probably totally insane, but the DQ number seems kinda low to me as far as what I was expecting. It's a good remake/port of a game that is often voted the #1 game of all time in Japan, in the #1 game series in Japan, on an insanely hot system with a large userbase. I would imagine they probably went through their entire shipment though. On the other hand since it's DS it'll probably have good legs, sales aren't front-loaded as much.

So DQV is the FFVI/VII of the DQ series?

Honestly, I don't think that's it. There must be some other reason for the hardware bump... but I can't quite put my finger on it....

I think maybe he meant in general. The PSP has been selling very well since Crisis Core came out  Yet only a few titles have sold amazing.

I've been hearing reports of Sony repositioning the PSP as a multimedia device rather than as a gaming machine ever since the launch of the Slim & Lite. I don't know how true these reports are though.

When the Famitsu numbers were posted, someone said there was a new color and a TV-Tuner thing package (not sure about this part).

Oh, I was under the impression that it was a port from the PC.
Not a port at all. The CGs were redone and added, the system took a change and went 3D, the voices were recasted, new opening movie by Studio 4°C... about the only thing that would parallel between the PC and PS3 version would be the story, and that probably has many additions as well.

Thanks for making the thread, donny. As I'm currently on a hydrofoil boat between Korea and Japan, I couldn't make it myself. :p

Glad to see RE0 still selling. I see it as a counterpart to Phoenix Wright 2 on DS, which had no new content, but served to catch DS gamers up despite the DS running GBA games. Bring on REmake, Capcom so that the ports end already. :D

You do realise that the DS is still selling good amounts, just not insane amounts it used to do? And also that the DS has sold 22 million already.

It's already done quite a bit better than I expected, but I'd still like to see more. :)
Famitsu had it at 177,225 for the 30th June-6th July week, so given its chart position for the past two weeks since then, it's probably very close to 200,000 units now.

To be fair in the context of the post he was replying to, there wasn't really a need to say it. The guy didn't wander in and say "OMG DS BOMBA NEEDS DS2 NINTENDO DOOMED", he correctly noted that the PSP now consistently outsells the DS in terms of hardware. Which is true.

... and it's not as though there aren't just as many people desperately trying to minimize the PSP's hardware growth as there are people wandering in after a few year exile desperately trying to minimize the DS's historic success.

Impressive RE0 performance. Thought it would drop like a rock out of the top 30. Tales of Symphonia seems like it will at least crack 200k.

The enigma to me is the 360 numbers. Who buys 3,700 360s a week in Japan? I bet most of them are shipped out of the country.. I mean seriously. Who? There isn't even a single 360 game in that top selling list.. the sales numbers still fluctuate regardless.

Well, Horii did mention another DQM would be likely on DS when he was hinting about DQ DS remakes happening. So, considering the remakes became a reality, I fully expect a Joker sequel in 2009 as well.

Good :) Let's not give Capcom any more shitty port job ideas.
I think that the fact this straight port will go on to sell at least 50,000 copies will give Capcom the idea that it was a good plan, to be honest. That's a decent amount of profit for what appears to be a small effort with barely any ad push.

Re: Famitsu numbers.

ToS will probably be gone next week, right before it hits 200K.

Pretty impressive for Bio 0. Like I said last night, damn game is going to sell 50K which is just insane.

Dragona Akehi said:
But according to Sinobi, there is no shortage this time, which is why I'm a bit worried.

The supply problems with both DQ4 and DQMJ were mostly in the following weeks rather than the opening, though; they sold fast but not ludicrously fast at open, but then couldn't be restocked in time.

In order to not do as well as DQ4 was doing, this game would have to start falling off much more quickly, so we'd probably see evidence of it next week. This game will want to hit 150k+ next week to keep up with DQ4's pace, and then hang on above 50k for at least a few weeks after that.

SailorDaravon said:

It was #15, just the OP of last week's thread leaves out the games from 11-20 for some reason.

Also I'm probably totally insane, but the DQ number seems kinda low to me as far as what I was expecting.

I think those expectations were off. The game beat DQ4's opening week despite being a game that was more recently, and more graphically impressively, remade than DQ4.

Famitsu said:

So, yeah, like I thought: MGS4 has moved into the trickle-off phase and is pretty close to being totally done selling. My earlier estimate of 625k lifetime is looking pretty good --maybe a hair too low -- I think.

I´ve updated my Famitsu - excelfile and here are the Top10 publisher ever in Japan, if someone is interested.

It´s not complete, but very comprehensive.

Games: 4.026
Units: 755.650.547

Code:
Titles	Publisher	Units Average Total market share

370x	Nintendo	258.779.101	699.403 34,3 %
419x	Konami 55.990.485	133.629 7,4 %
62x	Square 50.063.189	807.471 6,6 %

204x	SCE 41.381.307	202.850 5,5 %
43x	Enix 34.627.008	805.279 4,6 %
295x	Sega 33.324.366	112.964 4,4 %

Holy shit at the drop off after the merger.

And LOL at Konami. Quantity isn't everything.

This is unrelated to new data in general, but just a general sales thing I'd been thinking about, and Captain Smoker's publisher post brought it back to the forefront. With Wii's hardware total great for its age, a decent tie ratio, and Nintendo dominating the software sales, I wonder how Nintendo's total software sold on Wii compares to the total (so far) of a few big publishers from PS2? Note that there's missing data and always the possibility of some mistake causing a game to not be included or counted twice, buuuut close enough for now. Here are the ones that reached at least 10 million.

Square Enix: 17.8 m
Square: 5.8 m
Enix: 1.7 m
So Square + Enix + Square Enix = 25.3 m

SCE: 14.9 m

Bandai: 12.9 m
Namco: 10.8 m
Namco Bandai: 5.1 m
So Namco + Bandai + Namco Bandai = 28.8

Capcom: 11.9 m

Koei: 12.8 m

Konami: 21.5 m

Nintendo on Wii: 16.7 m
Pokémon on Wii: 0.3 m
So Nintendo + Pokémon on Wii: 17.0 m

Compared to top PS2 publishers they're only behind Konami and the combined Square/Enix and Namco/Bandai numbers. Subtract 2.4 million if you don't want to count Wii Play, which would additionally put SCE PS2 ahead of Nintendo Wii.

Most people who are interested in the DQ series bought the DS with either Joker or DQIV.

Continuing from my last, I realized I could make an SQL query to sum up games and split them into publisher/platform. So any goofiness in terms of publishers that should be split/merged also holds over to this list. Includes a link to the game search, so you can see what games are being counted.
