But it's not shocking...
No, it's not. But the big drops for both PS3 and 360 versions prove how much more frontloaded this game is going to be comparing to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Yeah, I think it's interesting because we will most likely be seeing a VERY similar scenario with GT5P -> GT5. Some older PS3 games seemed to have started really really low, and picked up a decent fanbase as the PS3 started to sell more in Japan.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
What an irony, looking at those 1Q 2010 releases and the wii performance this december... :-/

Wow, the Inazuma Eleven number is crazy.
I didn't ever expect them to reach that high.
It'll be a million seller in a few weeks given this trend.

Level 5 really hit it so far with the DS.

I wonder why Nintendo is not interested to buy Level 5.

Good number all around except for one thing.

Amazing good numbers for the Wii.

Amazing hardware it the leak is real.

Amazing NSMB, SW3, and Taiko sales. Great holds on the evergreens.

Nintendo is still the king of the Holidays.

FFXIII did better than I expected. Will probably sell its first shipment and not get MH3ed and hit bomba bins by 2nd week.

PSP games held pretty, P*P is having better legs than I expected and Queen's blade did much better than I expected.

Crazy Inazuma sales.

Wow at TOG though. The legs were worse than I thought. It'll hit 200K because of the shipment and bomba bins but I'd consider this probably the biggest bomba of the year.

Yeah, stars aligned today, 2nd results today. Using 1m as FFXIII 1st day. Humongous tweaking to make align correctly in the code tags...

Maybe because L5 wants to stay independent and they are doin just fine this way?

Yeah, I think it's interesting because we will most likely be seeing a VERY similar scenario with GT5P -> GT5. Some older PS3 games seemed to have started really really low, and picked up a decent fanbase as the PS3 started to sell more in Japan.
About GT5. What are the expectations for this game? My opinion is that the fall of the series will continue. Not a huge drop from GT4 but after seeing what Gran Turismo Portable did (we are talking about PSP and Japan here, where some shit games have sold much more) I don't expect it to fire up the charts. A big first week and the usual decline after that.

Yeah. I bet Nintendo is probably wanting them to make Wii games though. Inazuma Eleven Break is definitely a Wii game, and they might be making a Wii Ninokuni? Edit: And DQ X of course.

I stated what I thought it would do before, but some GT fans proceeded to attempt to convince me why I'm completely wrong. I personally expect 700k++ to be an upper range for what the game can do. Could be completely off, and it could actually do 900k or more, but I don't really feel that at all. The racing genre has been in a clear decline, and so has overall interest in GT in Japan.

Wow at TOG though. The legs were worse than I thought. It'll hit 200K because of the shipment and bomba bins but I'd consider this probably the biggest bomba of the year.
I can find you at least 10 bigger bombs this year than this, if you talk about budget and expectations.

Yeah, that's because Dragon Quest X
(doubtful)
will be the one to do it next year.

NSMBWii was announced like 7 months before it was released. You'd be stupid to that we know what Nintendo's big hit will be next year.

Same happened with Media Create
GCN: 4.180.061
PS3: 4.276.480

When ever I see this, I just can't believe it. If I understand correctly:

PS3 from launch 2006 to date 2009 sells as much as NGC from launch 2001 to 2004, where it completed its life cycle. So I think we are comparing a flop to a flop right there, with numbers at hand.

thing is, PS3 slim right now is truly the console's 2nd chance, a 2nd life. Sony must be very thankful with the japanese for actually giving the console another chance.

Do know of any other console that had this kind of comeback? I remember the saturn getting a 2nd breath as well but not sure if that counts as a comeback.

Holy crap at nsmb wii on famitsu. If there is supply it could conceivably hit 3 million in 2 weeks.

and it looks like MC will be tracking Wii lower again this holiday. Think the same thing happened last year

The Japanese difference cancels out about half of the NA numbers for NSMBWii as far as MW2 goes

I know you signified 'console' but the PSP certainly had a similar comeback.

In Japan? Can you name them. Cause in foreign markets I can think of some but I can't think of any in Japan.

I wonder what Super Mario USA sold...

As far as I know, this was first released as part of Super Mario All Stars. The first release it got on its own was Super Mario Advance, at .88m. If you are referring to its release in Japan before it got they attached the Mario brand for the US market, then I can't tell you. Numbers from that far back are pretty hard to find.

Start with Gran Turismo Portable, continue with some HD fighting games and some Wii RPGs, adventures and platforms at the beginning of the year.

I'm positive it had a Famicom standalone release.

Let's not forget Sakura Note. Even though they probably didn't expect much after Contact's terrible showing, it's obvious they were hoping it would do much better if it had big names like Uematsu behind it. I'm sure MMV didn't greenlight the game expecting it to sell... worse.

I guarantee you Q1 2010 will have better sales than 2009. Way too early to predict 2010 given how nintendo operates

Wait, why do you say the GC's life was only to 2004?

Yes, what a disaster that game was in sales...

I don't have the numbers to hand, but I think it may be fair to say that the GC had pretty much done selling significant numbers by then. Will check...

EDIT: I think sub-10k through much of 2005 pretty much tells the story...

Zelda and Galaxy 2 along with WiiRelax will be the heavy hitters. Right now NCL's board of directors do a synchronized facepalm that they didn't release a new 2D Mario during the GameCube era. 2D games never lost their popularity on Nintendo systems, Nintendo just stopped making them for consoles for some reason(The Stamper brothers and Takeda circle jerking about SGi workstations during those meetings perhaps?).:lol

I know at least Resident Evil 4 hit in 2005, surely that must've moved hardware?

When was the last time the consoles outsold the portables? PS3 Slim launch?

PS3 hardware sales exceeded my expectations. I expected it to do around what the Wii did on MC's charts, hence thinking they'd be closer, but I underestimated the amount of bundles they had available. It's interesting that this makes it even more likely that the Wii had a winning weekend, while the PS3's sales are clearly concentrated on FFXIII's release day. Looks like the Wii wins YTD 2009.

EXGN said:

It barely did. I think GC hardware sales that week were around 8000, when the system had been averaging around half of that by 2005.

But the big drops for both PS3 and 360 versions prove how much more frontloaded this game is going to be comparing to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

It'd kind of have to be. COD4 was severely supply constrained at launch. I don't think that happened this time around.

Why buy the cow when the cow is already willing to produce the milk, pasteurize it, sell it in your marketplace, and cut you in on the profits?

Whaa? It's definitely not quite what some of us expected, but others have done a lot worse than, say, missing expecations by a third.

Yeah, plotting them both from launch we see a slope change at very similar times.

Wikipedia says July 14, 1992. Yes, 2 years after Super Mario World and 1 before Super Mario All-Stars. Given that, I doubt it was very huge on Famicom.

I doubt NSMB would have had such a huge amount of success on GCN because it's really a bit of a matter of mindshare, too. Mario Sunshine also did way less than Mario Galaxy and don't let me get started about Mario Kart...

Yeah really interesting all around. PS3 is doing better than I expected, Wii I think I pegged pretty well, but as someone who probably was more bullish on NSMB Wii than most I am absolutely shocked at these numbers. I mean, it really looks like it could hit 5 million. Amazing. Nintendo has effed up a lot with the Wii, but when they get something right they really get it right. Now we will see if it can carry hardware for a quarter or 2

It'll be very interesting to see if NSMBW will be able to attract people to Wii HW after the holidays are over. I think it will, but to what extent?

BAH I guess TOG didn't bomba as bad as some of the games mentions. I guess I just had it in my mind because people kept touting as the leader of the great third party holiday season for the Wii.

Oh yeah another game people forgot to mention as one of the largest bombas of the year.

Interesting, I never thought the PSP was considered at one time a flop in Japan then made a comeback.

I asume it was the time japanese decided to go apeshit about Monster Hunter (?).

Golden Week doesn't look so 'Golden' to me, I think that if Nintendo wants to take advantage of it next year they need some sort of important software release at the same time. Wasn't there a DS game that did really good because they launched it just before Golden Week?

2009 Golden Week was pathetic for all systems. There was a lack of high profile games.

i.e. Last week it should have been Mariox2
this week Mariox3
next week Mariox4
