Possibly. Since I don't live in Japan I'm just relaying what's being said by those there. We'll have to wait for this week's numbers to see if there was any effect on FFXIII.
Code:
First four weeks (week - sales - drop):

-- Crisis Core --
37 470,152
38 132,667 (-71.8%)
39 61,001 (-54.0%)
40 26,729 (-56.2%)

-- Dissidia --
51 503,723
52 156,539 (-68.9%)
01 96,751 (-38.2%)
02 43,697 (-54.8%)
We can see the biggest difference between the PSP releases came in the week of the New Year holiday. If FFXIII follows the same pattern, we'll still see a huge drop this week (-85% or worse), a softer drop next week, then back to regular drops.
Code:
-- FFXII --
11 1,840,397
12 217,438 (-88.2%)
13 91,078 (-58.1%)
14 45,495 (-50.0%)

NSMBW is insane. If this game survives the usual Nintendo post-holiday drop then they don't even need a Q1 lineup.

Iwata is that you?

probably the biggest bomba for a nintendo game...

Their Gamecube quiz game, which I think also had NHK Red vs White branding, did around 35k lifetime. I expect this will crawl to the same :p

We are waiting for Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks first-day sales number. It is the last major release in Japan this year. If it has high sales in its first-week, it may knock out Phantasy Star Portable 2 or Queen's Blade Spiral Chaos from the Top Ten list next week.

If New Super Mario Bros. Wii's sales continue to be strong, it will easily pass Super Mario All-Stars (called Super Mario Collection in Japan) by next week, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Land 2 two weeks from now.

I don't know why it couldn't be true, at least from a hardware perspective.

I think people overestimate the importance of having different software in any given period. All you need is something to attract people to consistently buy your console - if it happens to be one title instead of five, so be it.

In terms of (re)igniting the Wii's software market, then I agree that multiple, various titles are necessary.

I wasn't necessarily disagreeing with him and said much the same thing yesterday I believe. Just making a little joke that Iwata's attitude towards Q1 seems to be similar.

Don't forget secret New Year's Conference and Galaxy 2 February surprise. :/

The total sales difference between the two games is around 156K. If New Super Mario Bros. Wii manages to outsell Friend Collection by at least 156K next week, it will bypass the latter game's total sales.

There was a bit of talk a few weeks ago about how this was likely to be the first year in quite some time with a single system holding the top three titles for sales over that year. It looks like NSMBWii is going to be the game that stops the DS taking that title, barring a massive plummet in sales.

Good PS3 and Wii hardware sales :) Also pretty many Wii titles in the Media Create Top 50 list. Does anyone know what the most Wii titles that have charted in one week in Media Create Top 50 by the way?

Merry Chrstmas everyone! :)

That's a very good point. How do total hardware sales this week compare to historical highs? The power of all markets old and new, core and casual, existing as one, beautiful. :'(
Going by MC data, ranking of the weeks 51:

2006 - 1,049,703 (12)
2004 - 995,185 (7)
2005 - 954,827 (9)
2007 - 770,871 (11)
2009 - 706,749 (9)
2008 - 592,175 (7)
2002 - 572,500 (4)
2003 - 544,093 (5)

In parenthesis the number of different hardware SKUs, such as DS, DSL, DSi, DSiLL etc.

Not that high, but 2009 has been at least outperforming 2008 in the 5 week period we're predicting:
Code:
	   2008 2009

49 296,268 357,013 +21%
50 420,138 436,621 +4%
51 592,175 706,749 +19%
52 568,277
1 600,627

I will never give in,

There's no reason to. Famitsu still gives way more data than Media-Create and more often. MC has been the official tracker for GAF for years, though. The Famitsu leaks didn't change that.

This week. The previous record was 15 from Dec 8-14, 2008.

Edit:
Probably has a lot to do with NDS declining so much. This is the 157th ranked week for how many DS games are in the Top 50. By the way, third-parties are apparently supporting the PSP with more releases in Q1 2010 than DS. Anyone care to comment on that? The claim is that third-parties avoided Wii because of poor third-party sales. DS, though?

Ah ok, so there is a new record this week of numbers of Wii titles who charted in one single week in the Media Create Top 50 list, nice :) Thanks for the info! :)

Used copies are already affecting sales, because we're already in the second week. We go through this with every major Japanese RPG. FFXIII is not going to be immune to this effect in any way; if it varies from the norm, it would absolutely be in seeing heavier used traffic due to the high price.

The used price is still not a great deal less (so it might not be having a drastic effect yet), but the price stores are willing to pay for used copies has already dropped so the used price will soon follow. The fact that the amount that the store will offer has already gone down means that they are getting more used copies than they can quickly sell back. As charlequin said, this is a problem with all big RPG games.

First it was Touch Dic and now this:
40. / 00. [NDS] Poupee Girl DS (Alvion)
Is it pronounced how I think it is pronounced?:lol

I am quite a bit surprised that the Wii couldn't beat the PS3 this week, but... it shall do so next week with ease.

Ouch! It fell 37 slots from its debut week, the biggest drop this week. It was really top-loaded.
It's really shocking to see a 360 game drop like a rock on its second week.

and it looks like MC will be tracking Wii lower again this holiday. Think the same thing happened last year

This year is a little strange. Next week will be equal or a little bigger from this and the first week of 2010 will be equal to these or slightly smaller. So don't get surprised if Mario goes up again.

Good results for PS3/FFXIII as expected, but damn... Wii is hanging in there really strong. Very impressive weekly numbers especially given the hype surrounding SE's launch.

Next week famitsu will possibly have a Nintendo 9/10. This hasn't happened before at the last week of the year even at the glorious days of Wii and DS. It has happened once with Media Create (2006).

So it's funny to me that on the one hand kpop100 was 100% correct and the PS3 did indeed outsell the Wii by more than 30k this week, and on the other hand the Wii way overshot my own expectations and certainly those of many other predictors and, I think we can safely say, would've outsold the PS3 if the Lightning bundle had as limited as we originally thought.

I can't get over how ridiculous NSMBW is doing. Even as someone who was a pretty relentless advocate for it from early on and insisted it would be a big hit against many naysayers, if someone had told me it'd be blowing launch-aligned numbers for NSMB DS out of the water I'd have said they were crazy. :lol

Yeah really interesting all around. PS3 is doing better than I expected, Wii I think I pegged pretty well, but as someone who probably was more bullish on NSMB Wii than most I am absolutely shocked at these numbers. I mean, it really looks like it could hit 5 million. Amazing. Nintendo has effed up a lot with the Wii, but when they get something right they really get it right. Now we will see if it can carry hardware for a quarter or 2

Wow, Graces fell off a cliff. FF13 and NSMB Wii have just utterly crushed it! (Love how NSMBWii punches SM64 out of the way and shoots a fireball up SMAS' arse on the chart BTW, nice attention to detail! :lol)

Yeah, but the game is not hurt. It was a low cliff. More of a mound, really.

The interesting question for me is whether NSMBW is going to be a hardware driver into the New Year. My instinct is that it will be, but I'm not sure how pronounced the effect will be.

Wow, the Inazuma Eleven number is crazy.
I didn't ever expect them to reach that high.
It'll be a million seller in a few weeks given this trend.

Most best selling Nintendo 64 games has "64" in their title. It's how Nintendo rolls
Not as much the case, at least in Japan. #1 and #2 yes (MK64, SM64), #3-5 no (SSB, OOT, Pokémon Stadium).

There's a problem in the combined PSP LTD. It's exactly the same as the normal PSP LTD.
Said the frightened subordinate to Kaz Hirai.

Wow, Graces fell off a cliff. FF13 and NSMB Wii have just utterly crushed it! (Love how NSMBWii punches SM64 out of the way and shoots a fireball up SMAS' arse on the chart BTW, nice attention to detail! :lol)

At least Tales of Graces is not like the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 which dropped a shocking 37 slots from last week.
