As I wrote yesterday after the fake leak, I had hoped (secretly, I have to say, even expected, the preorder numbers and buzz seemed good) that it would be able to surpass part 2, and in MC it very clearly did. These sales should be good enough to reach a higher LTD, even accounting for the usual FW/LTD ratio increase in sequels. How many direct sequels have had a sales increase going from PS2 to PS3? I'm quite sure it's the only JRPG at least. I hope this broadens the perspective of people who believe that all smaller Japanese developers should have gone Wii or remained exclusively on handhelds.

I still think they should stick to the DS or Wii (especially DS, though). Games would probably sell just as much or more on the DS, plus it would be cheaper to make.

Is Madworld getting any kind of publicity or marketing in Japan? Generally, how has Platinum been received there?
Platinum is doing fairly well so far in the Japanese market, but I wouldn't expect much in the way of publicity or marketing for Madworld. It's CERO Z, so it's going to get nothing, and be buried behind the counters in stores, to boot.

Yup. I definitely got that one wrong..shock!

Its amazing to see how long Wii can maintain decent sales when they literally have nothing coming up that can sell more than 75K LTD.

The Wii should drop to 35k or below next week wonder if I'll be even with PS3 hardware sales next week.

You'd be surprised how much marketing SEGA actually does here. Bayonetta had a huge marketing/advertising push behind it. But you can't market CERO Z titles. It's the same reason why Sony had a billion ads for Resistance 2 but not a single ad for inFamous.

A 5K-7K drop is possible for the Wii for next week.

Uhh..we actually have the real numbers now, just so you know.

Right...

76.772
57.349
45.167
42,309

So next week I'll go below 40k. Wonder if SO4 will be enough to keep PS3 around 32k.

I'll be surprised if SO4 sells more than 60K.

Edit- 1st week I mean.

Did SO4 really get just a bad rap in Japan that it's gonna not do so good on the PS3? I mean SO3 did sell over half a mil in japan... guess making a 360 game was a really poor choice who knows how much it would have sold on the PS3 if it first came out on that system before the negative feedback came out on how the game turned out to be.

Dash Kappei

Not actually that important
Well, Tatsunoko Cross generation of Heros only sold like 50k LTD, came out just 13 months ago and it can be found for a pittance. Japanese players probably care more for the original anime music than online/better balancing, besides competetive players which:
a) play in the arcades
b) never got interest with the game in the first place
In the end if it does 30k it'll not be that bad (ie not unexpected from Capcom).
Criminally low for a game that good, but we can't talk about a bomba since Capcom already knew what to expect from sales and decided to release a JPN version anyway (which wasn't originally planned).

That 2nd video is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever seen. How can people write this shit and think it's good?

It's the joys of being trapped by a fanbase.

Their tastes are very specific, and they're very demanding and loud. They're you're most loyal customers, and they will pay gobs of money for your game (collector's editions, collectibles, etc). Thus, the margins on each of these purchasers can be extremely high. Companies like high margins, and they like satisfying very vocal, passionate customers.

But these same customers advocate things which, over time, increasingly alienate everyone else. We're basically at the end stage of this phenomenon for a lot of JRPGs.

Unless NBGI strongarms GUST, a handheld will never be a lead platform for the AT series. Of the home consoles, they'll probably continue to support a native console, and more specifically, the native console that has the best audio output quality due to the type of content the game revolves around.

Didn't Gust recently say they plan on making more games for the PS3?

Ooh nice.

I hope they put up a strategy document soon. Those are always quite interesting.

Edit:

Judging by their schedule history, it will be at least a couple of days before the meeting about these results.

Shouldn't that be DS and PSP? Why exactly would you put the Wii ahead of the PSP. Western sales for mid-tier jrpg's aren't as big as they used to be.

Don't hold me to this since I couldn't get a copy of Jan's Gemaga (local bookstore only gets 1 copy/mo and some bastard bought Jan's copy a bit before I went into the store...) but supposedly one of the higher ups from GUST was interviewed in regards to the PS3 and said that sales for Rorona was proof positive to them that they had made the right decision with the platform and would continue supporting the PS3. LTD sales are still a ways off, but I wouldn't be surprised if AT3 sales cemented that train of thought even more this past week.

I think he also said that developing for the PS3 was easier for them than the PS2 (probably due to the same reasons given here if you can read Japanese.)

Annie no Atelier (DS) - 2009-03-12 - 5040yen - 14k
Atelier Rorona (PS3) - 2009-06-25 - 7140yen - 65k

OMG THEY SHOULD STICK TO THE DS! IT WILL PROBABLY SELL JUST AS MUCH OR MORE ON THE DS! HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Edit: Holy shit, Lina no Atelier came out on the DS in Dec and it never charted. Damn. I agree Gust should totally stick to DS and Wii (especially DS) because then they'll be out of business and I'll have one less loli moe company to worry about. :D

Game is cheaper, cheaper to develop for, 7x the install base and it sold 14k.
The fanbase is just not there.
Will be interesting to see how the PSP version (although a port) will do.

I find if quite funny that after all those years of system wars in the 80s-90s, more than 1/3 of Sega's games sold feature Mario on the box...

So thedrill hw leak was fake as well. I agree with duckroll that we should just stop posting "leaks" for a few weeks and wait for the real numbers. There's obviously a bunch of tards out there trying to capitalise on the on the absence of any real leaks.

As a matter of interest did we ever make a proper prediction set for this week? I'm going to say about 95k for SO4.

Read something ridiculous on kotaku. It's unbanned, right? Anyways, they argue PSP's 45k sold more than DS's 66k because DS's sells are split between DSL, DSi and DSXL.

http://kotaku.com/5464720/psp-still-the-platform-to-beat-in-japan-or-is-it

Not that I'm one to defend Kotaku of all places, but all they're saying is is that at a first glance it appears PSP is on top, but when you combine all the DS skus it actually isn't. Not really that exciting...

That just sounds really bizarre, he either has the numbers or he hasn't, so I don't see how changing them a bit stops MC going after him.

In any rate, as far as I'm concerned, non actual = fake. Pretty much anybody can guess hardware numbers within a few k (I'm not saying he's guessing, but his numbers are about as useful as an educated guess).
