I think we should all just declare that we lost badly this week. None of the predictions are anything to be proud of because we were all totally off base in regards to the top 2 titles. Road was the only one even within decent range with Project Diva 2.

I basically posted this in the "is Wii 3rd party support dead" thread, but the Wii is indeed screwed in Japan, and at this point I don't see the value in assigning blame- it is what it is. I think 3rd parties handled things poorly, but I also think Nintendo handled things poorly. duckroll brings up Xenoblade, but that needed to come out in 2007/2008, not the middle of 2010 when things are basically set in stone.

Anyways, just to look at how horrible things have gotten, here are the 3rd party Wii games reaching a 100K LTD or above this year: RE:DC, in basically still the 2009 holiday season, and the new Dragon Quest arcade game. That's it.

Here are 3rd party games announced that will even meet the threshold of a 100K LTD: DQX, release date unknown, and the Inazuma Break game. That is literally it.

Now, to pivot to my main point- does anyone think Nintendo can or will let this situation go on for another year or two?

I for one, will not be surprised if Agito ends up being the first major multiplatform portable game on 3DS/PSP. It might or might not happen simultaneously, but I feel that considering the heavy investment they have put into Agito all these years, they simply cannot afford to have it as a PSP exclusive when the PSP market is completely dead outside of Japan. The 3DS being up to spec with the PSP now could mean more multiplatform games in the future too. That imo, is the only chance the PSP has for continued survival.
Yeah, it seems like that's what Sony is planning/hoping.

In theory, making multiplatform (japanese) 3DS/PSP games in 2011 should be a good business decision seeing how this year will be the best year for psp in number of titles, quality and units sold.

Now, if that really happens it will be good for PSP but I can't imagine that situation being good for the (theoretical) PSP2 when that will help 3DS to get even more support and a long headstart.

No, you're wrong. Nintendo can do no wrong. Third parties were supposed to put all their franchises on the Wii to FORCE gamers to go on the Wii! :lol
:lol It doesn't matter that they get $10 less per title on the Wii.

The box art is way better than the NA release imo. Also the Modnation.jp website is waaay crazier than the usa website.

Famitsu didn't give it that good of a score. (8/7/8/7)

Oh I just remembered a PSP title which could be 2011. Little Battlers from Level 5. Now, that's another candidate for 3DS multiplatform release...
Something tells me if that's the case, only one version will make it out of Japan. Not any possible 3DS one is paperwork is to be believed.

I see I posted in the wrong thread last night, but hell yes Miku 2.

Now hopefully Sega updates the PS3 expansion to support the sequel. Some of the videos in the new one are <3.

That is a pretty big sales difference between the PS3 and the Wii version of Sengoku Basara 3 indeed, especially concidering that the Wii installbase is about 5 million units larger compared to the PS3 installbase and that the Wii version of Sengoku Basara 3 is 1000 yen cheaper than the PS3 version. The PS3 version has online play and HD graphics though and i am not very surprised that the PS3 version sold better than the Wii version (since this have happend some times before with other Wii/PS3 multiplatform titles as well, even if the PS3 installbase is smaller compared to the Wii installbase), but i still think it is a quite big difference.

Any known reason for why Sengoku Basara 3 sold so well by the way? It seems to have sold more than Sengoku Basara 2's LTD in just 1 week :)

Wii third-party support is the Murder on the Orient Express of video game industry failures -- everyone's to blame.

Just curious has Wii ever beat the PS3 on a multi-platform same day release?

Its seems like whenever Wii gets a multi-platform same day release it does worse than at least one counterpart. Sometimes even to the Xbox 360. I remember one game where the Wii version was like 20 bucks less and had more options but the PS2 version still outsold by like 500 percent. Its like people refuse to play games on the Wii unless they absolutely have to.

There has never been a multiplatform game where the Wii sold best at all. Even when the other release was on the XBox360 only.

Looking at the Famitsu 2007 Top 500 (2008 is a slash-and-burn casualty of bttb's departure), there isn't a multi-platform title between Wii and PS3 listed. That shows how screwed up third-parties have been on Wii this gen from the start. PS3 has had better sales for third-parties in Japan than Wii because third-parties fought so hard to make it so. Completely skipping Wii versions of any big-ish PS3 games even when there was a later PS2 port.

The Wii third-party landscape is a result of what third-parties and Nintendo have created and not an inevitable consequence intrinsic to the Wii. Wii would've very likely been much bigger than PS3 for third-parties (overall) in Japan if multi-platform titles had been multi-platform on Wii, too, from the start.

Nintendo needs to release a new home console if they want to keep up with the Ps360 when it comes to 3rd party support.

But the Wii is still selling well and making a lot of money for Nintendo. So they don't care.

Isn't in kinda logical that the PS3 version of a third party title poops on the Wii version? (saleswise). Especially if it comes to coregames. You have a set number of coregamers in Japan right. Those gamers probably own a Wii and a PS3 by now. Why should those people go with the Wii version? If it's a game I want the $10 wouldn't be enough to sway me for getting a version of the game that looks worse and has no online. Seriously how many of you guys would get the Wii version over PS3, if you owned both consoles!?

But I agree those BS3 Wii numbers are really low! Now that I think about it, there are at least 5 million Wii owners out there in Japan who don't own a PS3. Don't tell me those people only play Wii sports and 2d mario games?

Why do you assume people would by the Wii version if there were two versions of each third party game? Or are you presuming that sells would just magically double for games if released on wii and ps3. Its clear just by looking at sales of multiconsole releases that one version of the game garners most of the sales weather that be between Ps3 and 360 releases or Ps3 and wii releases.

The only way I see this theory working(which for some reason is accepted as fact) is if the titles were exclusive to Wii and there were no viable alternatives on the other consoles.

COD4 for example say it did launch simultaneously on all three consoles most would agree that it would still sell the most on 360.

But if it was launched on Wii exclusively I don't think it would of had the same impact that it had when launched on PS360 since it wouldn't be the same game to extent without xbox live sort of like wiisports wouldn't have its impact without the wiimote(does that make sense). So in this scenario Wii has COD but to garner a shift in FPS sales to Wii there would have to be no Halo or BC or Killzone, etc on HD consoles as alternatives(I feel these games or some other title would just absorb the lost sales of COD). Only under these extreme hypothetical circumstances could I see the idea that you and others put forth as feasible.

That was a long:D

I just feel that the problem most have with third parties is not that their sales are bad (SB3 just crushed all the previous entries on Ps3 alone) but that they wish those sales were taking place on Wii instead of another console. Why that matters, idk.

Nintendo should release Pokemon Grey as a dual release on DS/3DS. It'll satisfy the DS userbase and at the same time help sell the 3DS.

More would buy it than would if there was no Wii version. In 2007 with Wii still selling out and PS3 tanking hard, it would've majorly shaped the audience for Wii to have much more traditional games available for it. Sales beget sales. Welcome to Sales-Age 101.

Since you're shifting to U.S. sales, it's worth pointing out (again) that COD3 Wii outsold COD3 PS3.

What is meant by 'dual release'? A Twilight Princess type deal, or something else?

I see it just coming out for one system outright.

I was looking at H1 sales (Hardware from Famitsu, Software from Famitsu top 100 - top sellers obviously but stills gives a picture)

Software
WII
2007: 4.016.412
2008: 7.366.205
2009: 3.055.755
2010: 4.418.452

PS3
2007: 366.728
2008: 1.829.296
2009: 2.208.955
2010: 3.581.126

Hardware
WII
2007: 1.775.005
2008: 1.720.263
2009: 639.788
2010: 934.010

PS3
2007: 503.554
2008: 548.273
2009: 552.601
2010: 827.906

H2 was way stronger than H1 for both consoles, they probably won't meet H2 2009 performance at both HW and SW.

Pretty much, except there would be "real" incentive for people to buy the 3DS version since it'll be in 3D.

The only reasons why they probably haven't done this before to Pokemon because Nintendo handhelds has always been backward compatible or there's no new hardware to push at the time of release.

Many Japanese blogs reported that Black / White had an explosive start at preorders that destroyed previous Pokemon entries but I don't think what is happening with comgnet preorders has happened before. 6 weeks untill release and with the rate its preorders increase very soon it will outpace Diamond / Pearl, Heart Gold / Soul Silver and even Dragon Quest IX. I wonder what the initial shipment will be.

Niiiice numbers for Sengok Basara PS3. I can't wait til it comes over to the States! Project Diva is also MUCH higher than I would have predicted but good for Sega. Their current resurgence is heartening (I'm a Ryu Ga Gotoku/Yakuza fan!) and I hope it continues.

Impossible. The 3DS is completely different hardware, you cannot make a DS/DSi game with 3D enhancements on the 3DS.

Just like with the GBC and GBA, you cannot make a GBC game that utilises the GBA hardware (no, a slightly brighter colour pallet mode doesn't count)

If you're referring to the 3DS "enhancements" in Black & White, that's just a happy coincidence with the ability for a DSi game being able to read off the system's internal storage.

The way the compatibility with the 3DS' tag mode works is that the console downloads data outside of the game onto the 3DS' internal storage, where DSi games can then read off from. The game actually has no idea that it's being run on a 3DS.

If Nintendo make a Pokemon Grey, it'll be DSi exclusive but that's it.

I don't know why this belief persists, especially in the face of the efforts Nintendo have made to secure key third party titles (Monster Hunter Tri being the most obvious and relevant here) and the way they have gone about designing and presenting the 3DS.

They care about having third parties onboard and they are clearly prepared to pursue them. You might think they aren't going far enough or that they have gone about it in the wrong way, but to suggest that they simply don't care is ridiculous, especially when the lack of strong - hell, any - third party support has clearly damaged the performance of the Wii and could likely do the same for its successor if steps aren't taken now to ensure that doesn't happen.

So you're suggesting that Nintendo make an entirely different version of the game that will be incompatible with the DS version (outside of trading, which should still be compatible in some form) for the 3DS? Not a chance in hell :lol

Nintendo don't need a half hearted 3DS version of Pokemon B&W to sell the 3DS. They'll wait until the next true sequel is ready and it will be built from the ground up for the new platform.
