In Japan, the Xbox 360 outsold the DSi.

I never imagined I would type those words in that order.

Dengeki numbers are up...but oh my god this week isn't serious with inconsistencies.

01. [NDS] Love Plus + (Konami) - 103,042 / NEW
02. [360] Monster Hunter Frontier Online (Capcom) - 94,551 / NEW
03. [PS3] Atelier Totori: Alchemist of Arland 2 (Gust) - 72,725 / NEW
04. [NDS] Tokimeki Memorial: Girl's Side 3rd Story (Konami) - 58,405 / NEW
...
07. [PSP] My Summer Vacation Portable 2 (SCE) - 22,322 / NEW
08. [PS3] White Album: Tsuzurareru Fuyu no Omoide (Aqua Plus) - 22,232 / NEW
...
10. [PSP] Hatsune Miku: Project Diva (Sega) - 20,913 / NEW
..
17. [PSP] Chaos; Head Noah (5pb.) - 10,786 / NEW
18. [PSP] Starry Sky: In Spring - PSP Edition (Asgard) - 10,433 / NEW

Yeah, same for MHF but LP+ is at 20k more, Totori madness also 19k above, tokimemo slightly higher, miku goes down nearly 33%, white album slightly down, bokunatsu could be similar...and then starry sky, MC at 22k, dengeki says 10k, so awesome :lol And hardware is PS3 22730 > 360 21370 > Wii 19034 for Dengeki.

I'll post predictions results later when I recover from the shock :p

Wow, had no idea 360 got a Monster Hunter title. Those sure are popular in Japan, regardless of console.

Xbox 360 slim sells 15,000 at Japanese launch

Microsoft's new Xbox 360 model has sold 15,000 units in Japan during its first week on sale, pushing total sales of the console to 17,370 in the region.

That's a massive surge compared to last week's paltry 2060 units, with the console also helped by the release of Capcom's Monster Hunter Frontier Online which took the number one spot for the week ended June 27.

The console went on sale June 24, meaning sales figures reported by Andriasang only account for four days on the market. The slim model sells for ¥29,800 with the Elite SKU dropped in price to ¥24,800.

Not to put a damper on things but I don't think the 360 did that well considering the launch of a new slim console combined with Monster Hunter didn't beat a normal week of PS3 sales.

Actually rather surprised. The first and perhaps only ever awesome-tier ADV on the PS3, combined with the PS3's demonstratively greater userbase over the 360 and it could only sell this much? Prototype is not going to have fun with CLANNAD...

Good to know that port worked out for you, 5pb.

Any idea Why the trackers are so incredibly different this week?

What excatly about Totori could make it track so broadly?

Also lowest start for a ぼくの Title *T*

Things will be really fun if the supposedly leaked Famitsu first day sales are confirmed to be Famitsu first week sales.

Well, Clannad is much more popular than WA, so it might have a better chance.

Of course it can make it but it will need a 3DS port first.

How many times are you gonna keep saying that? I'm sure I'm not the only one that would much prefer an HD PSN port (like it's been rumored unlike the 3DS port you're suggesting). An HD PSN (and maybe even XBL for that matter) would easily help it pass the 3 million mark. Make it happen Konami.

I don't know. How many times did I say it?

I could't care less if it gets ported to 3DS or PSN or not, the game won't meet Konami's original expectations.

Enough times for me to have noticed. Didn't mean to sound rude, so sorry if it appeared that way. I'm still a little upset after hearing the result of today's game.

If it gets ported to another platform, I think it will. Regardless, I'd prefer to play it on HD and with dual analogs. I'm probably buying the 3DS at launch (if I get it, it'll be only the 3rd system I'll get at launch), but I'm not touching any 3DS game that would be better played with dual analogs, already been through that with PSP.

Anyways I just noticed that Demon's Souls The Best is out of the Top 50 for the first time. I blame all these new games on the list.

If this article is listing SMG2, LP+ and Xenoblade in order, Famitsu has LP+ well over 100k.

Seems like you're just trying to find an opportunity to voice your stupid grievances because you're afraid I'll ban you if you posted this in a PW thread. Lame! :lol

Except it's been ported to so many systems by now, no one cares. Prototype may have imagined that the chances were better on the PS3 than the 360, but if a real ADV make especially for the PS3 can't pull in a crowd, it's highly unlikely a 6-year old port will.

Xenoblade must be over 110k which means Love Plus + is also over 110k.

Total mess between the trackers but maybe first day sales were true.

I'll admit I didn't at all consider the new model to have any impact big or small in Japan. Didn't cross my mind at all. 15,310 units more than last week is fairly respectable by the current trend of the system there.

Also Xenoblade should have have broke at least 120k by now, success! :D

Didn't visit any stores today, sorry. :(

IE3 will undoubtedly be huge, though. I just hope Japan wasn't too deflated by the WC loss to Paraguay.
It's funny actually, I ran into the team at Dubai airport (we might have even been on the same flight, actually) and there was a big crowd of passengers cheering and clapping. I think Japan have definitely come through this with their heads held high. How that will effect IE3 sales I'm not too sure ;)

WTF does this have to do with sales-sage?! :lol

Seems like you're just trying to find an opportunity to voice your stupid grievances because you're afraid I'll ban you if you posted this in a PW thread. Lame! :lol

Not at all, I actually have no idea what you're talking about. I have posted on the PW thread like what? 3-4 times? Why would I keep posting there if I decided I'm not gonna get PW? I played the demo and, like I expected, I didn't like the controls due to lack of a 2nd analog. I was just responding to Chris1964 saying PW needs to be ported to 3DS in order to reach 3 million, which I only responded because it's not the first time I read him say that, and I already apologized because I said it in kind of a rude way. Maybe I veered off and added my personal opinions as to why I would personally prefer a PSN port (which has been rumored), so for that I apologize, maybe I shouldn't have added my personal opinion and just strictly kept it as to why I think MGSPW will reach 3 million if that port indeed comes. I'm not "grieving" because I'm not playing PW because I'm doing so by personal choice. And it's not like I'm port begging or saying something that's unfeasible when the developers themselves have said that it's a possibility.

I believe it would because it ain't even reach that imo.
If word of mouth is good and judging from second week sales 100k is the low bar of what the game will sell.

I don't even think this is the type of game that would even generate word of mouth. Looks very mediocre and hardly unique.

I'm interested in what you and the rest of sales-GAF think regarding what really generates good word of mouth in Japan, and how we see it through data. How does it vary on specific platforms, genres, periods of the years, etc in your opinion?:p

Games that start around 24K and hit around 44K the next week have a fair chance of reaching 100K, though it's not certain. Matching +/-5K each week there are quite a few results, and about 40% of them pass 100K. Well, possibly more did outside of my scope.

That's not my impression from the videos I have seen. Only the fact that it's from the creator of Phoenix Wright can make some fans of these series to show interested for Ghost Trick.

I don't think there is a specific answer for that. There are too many different variables for each game.
Friend Collection has good word of mouth and keeps selling for ever.
Yakuza 4 has good word of mouth but it didn't have the legs of Friend Collection.

Every game has to be studied seperately.

There are plenty of cases where good word of mouth will keep a game alive. The original Love Plus is a good example, started out average but became incredibly popular. Most of the praise was from internet forums and the like, the audience loved the game and kept talking it up to the point of becoming a phonememon, so more people bought it...I think the overall sales were like 5x first week in the end, so I wonder if the update can keep that momentum.

LP is also the kind of game that's meant to be played for a long time though, there's really no "end" I think, so maybe that'll make people hesistant to sell the game resulting in less used copies. I remember that used copies of that game were only a few hundred yen below new, which usually only happens if a game is in high-demand. Good idea, I suppose, considering that kind of market is probably one of the first to hunt for cheap used copies. I think tomodachi collection also has that sort of never-ending gameplay, along with hitting a market that usually doesn't care about used games as much. I suppose it would make sense for games like that to have strong tails.

I think the older Ace Attorney games also built up momentum through word of mouth, so it should be interestesting to see how Ghost Trick manages. If it can hit the casual market that the AA series was successful with, then new sales should probably keep on going for awhile.

Hopefully it's not quite such a delayed effect. Here's the original release of Ace Attorney for GBA. It's since been outsold by a GBA rerelease and three DS releases.
