As opposed to the Grand Canyon between them at this point last year?

YTD through July 5, 2009:
Wii - 647,140
PS3 - 601,133

never realized they were that close last year also, wasn't that before the price drop?

Hey look! Random noise pushed one crappy selling console over the other!

If we want to talk about random noise
Not to be getting picky but.. this is sales age! where people post about a 6 (6.000) (6 single unit) difference in the tracking numbers they have.

I think the move of the high-command at sony of the ps3 to "OPEN price" point is valid discussion too!

Someone can start by clarifying what this exactly means?

Sure, new ps3 color and 160GB model is being released on the 29th at 29,980 yen price point.

As of the 7th, to coincide with that, Sony moved the current 120gb price point of 29,980 yen to "open price" (and according to oosakaking they are giving very reasonable compensation to make up for the price drop - he is going to being selling that as his main unit until stock is gone at sony)

Some retailers(TOYS R US, ETC) have sliced the price of a new 120gb to as low as 23,000 yen. The average stands now at about 25,000 yen(according to kakaku, was on the 5th about 2000 yen higher)

I see. It makes complete sense when you put it like that. The source of my confusion was perhaps because I am in Britain, where sony (or any other hardware company) for that matter can't really legally set a market price point. They'll have the rrp (recommended retail price which is always higher then actual prices) and of course they'll expoit legal loophole or have other ways to encourage a pricepoint, but for the sake of the argument here, they pretty much have to have an open price policy.

Sellers of any product can sell it for anywhere between double the price (or higher if they so wish) and or at a loss.*

*Financial watchdogs may come into sort some things out but its open market most of the time.

Many larger retailers are already sold out of the 120GB though, and probably won't restock until the new model.

We will probably see a bump in the PS3 for a few weeks due to the open pricing, but yeah, as a whole I don't really see anything that could substantially change the market until then.

The most surprising thing here is that PSPGo is above 1k again. what brought on this soaring bump?

Yup there is literally zero interest for the thing, I'd wager the majority of last week's bump was die-hards upgrading.

isn't this what people always say about a long running franchise, yet they almost always have a significant bump on hardware when released?

My example is FFXIII.

There will be a bump, but not one that lasts very long. It won't change anything in the long run or make any long lasting impact. The reason why Media Create threads are getting really boring is because stuff have slipped into a very predictable and constant pattern which offers nothing exciting or different. GT5 won't change that, but the 3DS will.

But that was the entire point of the discussion. Until the 3DS, there will not be anything which would substantially change any hardware pattern. Then someone went "what about GT5?".

Not a large blast and then nothing bump like FFXII, but I'd say 30k instead of 20k for 3 months is the bump i expect to see(especially if they do the whole bundling it with every ps3 made like GT3).

After price cut DS picked up a bit, but after Fire Emblem there isn't any notable release until Pokemon (8 weeks until then). If Nintendo makes a DSi Pokemon bundle it could do big numbers.

Beyond the preference to not cuss (if I can help it and that includes quoting it) if he meant the actual place of Hell, how close someone is to it would depend greatly on their theological viewpoint, and thus, wouldn't be a good way to describe two consoles YTD sales in Japan. :p

"like white on rice"
"closer than a brother"
"like stink on manure"

Those all would've made much more sense. :D

I remember about a year ago it seemed doubtful that Wii would reach 15M LTD at Japan by the end of this gen. Since then sales have stabilized and I see that Wii is upclose to 30% YoY so far.

With that in mind, where do people see Wii ending up LTD when it is finally pulled from the market in Japan?

What about the PS3? Any hope for 9M? 10M?

Looking at the prologue numbers it will be somewhat of a miracle is GT5 passes 1 million lifetime unless it is bundled heavily. 730k copies of GT5:p have been shipped and that is counting the period of time where during 2008 GT5:p came with every console sold.

Don't see a hardware bump in Japan or NA however it's a given in EU seeing how the big the franchise is here.

So...

WKC2 - 107k
Wii Party - 66k
Harvest Moon - 39k
Crackdown 2 - 10k

WKC1 sold 132k in the first day.

- Not bad for WKC2 considering the first game is awful and PS3 is not as rpg starved as it was in 2008.
- Also not bad for Wii Party. It has two controller bundles so it'll keep selling until the launch of Wii2

Reasonable first day for Wii Party, but I don't expect much frontloading. Will be interesting to see how it performs over the next month.

It's a report of what retailers are saying about certain retail trends. It's too bad the rest is cut off, but the first line is basically saying that WKC2 is selling well, and some of the people buying it on the first day have also pre-ordered Sengoku Basara 3.
