Xenoblade did well. Even though the shipment numbers were wrong, it still probably cleared a big majority of its shipment.

It really depends on how it does next week. 15k? 30k? That depends on word of mouth and a good second shipment from Nintendo. Either way, we'll know next week considering how low the top 10 is :lol

[WII] Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo) - 39.500 / 364.542

he he. Galaxy 2 won't need the holiday bump:D

Given the market and the difference in install base, I can't exactly view Xenoblade only outselling GTA IV's DLC by 19K on its opening week as a "good" thing.

Is it too late to rename the game Dragon Quest Mecha?

I'm sure the title was just undershipped. I'm just making a funny.

The PS3 version of GTA IV sold over 200,000. In fact, with the best price sales included its sold over 300,000. Xenoblade is a new IP, and a spiritual successor to a franchise in which the last game sold under 200,000.

I don't see how that's bad at all. Expecting it to do triple digits in its first week was unrealistic.

I'm pleasantly surprised by Xenoblade - those sales have to be driven almost entirely by positive reviews and impressions, since they don't seem to have been driven by an extensive marketing and information campaign on Nintendo's part.

EDIT: Not that the numbers are objectively great overall - it's a pretty soft week - just that they could have been (and usually have been) a lot worse.

EDIT 2: And I do think changing the name from "Monado" to "Xenoblade" helped.

I don't have the NPD sales on Xenosaga III, but it's worth noting that traditionally the series has performed fairly well compared to its Japanese sales.

edit: holi shit fuck yeah at Galaxy 2, they finally get it?

Considering that almost 0 dollars went into the marketing budget, has most likely sold a big chunk of its initial shipment, is the spiritual successor (if that) to a series with diminishing sales and is on a platform that has had little RPG success... yeah, it's definitely B.

Of course it did. If it comes to America, I fully expect it to be called Xenoblade.

Be careful predicting that. Games with higher starting numbers do also tend to fall faster.

Hopefully Xenoblade will do well enough in Japan, and is being localized. I mean after all the game was revealed at E3 2009 (as Monado: Beginning of the World)

jj984jj

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Xenoblade!!!!

It did okay, right?!? Hopefully it does well next week since I don't see it hanging around too long.

Can't do predictions results without GTA 360 and Famitsu leak is busted so just Dengeki or late Famitsu update choices left. Btw, pretty bad showing for GTA 360 vs PS3 edition...did the episodes release digitally on 360 before?

Respectable Xenoblade numbers, I'm glad it outdid Soma Bringer handily. Good Galaxy 2 legs, not really extreme edge start for Just Cause, WE World Cup showing some legs but at pretty low numbers. At this rate they will only sell through the first shipment (talking PS3 here) before WC is over.

Bebpo says the game hasn't been pushed at all in Japan and the game was only "revealed" a few months ago. Obviously it was a hyperbole.

It has had TV ad spots with that idol troupe though, hasn't it? That plus a reasonable amount of coverage in Famitsu leading up to release is more than other Nintendo-published titles have received.

Nice to see it do reasonably - especially in light of the positive word-of-mouth so far - although I have my doubts as to whether it will make it much beyond 120k unless it has good legs for an RPG. Hopefully it will push Nintendo to make it a series, or at least to work more on making JRPGs a larger part of their portfolio.

As luck would have it, someone leaked a number of NPD LTDs in January 2008 on a public forum (not GAF, although I have no special secrets or sources).

As of January 2008, US NPD sales:
Xenosaga 1 - 513,000
Xenosaga 2 - 268,000
Xenosaga 3 - 115,000

Interesting. American numbers are fairly consistant with their Japanese counterparts. Xeno 1 and Xeno 2 were higher, while 3 was about 65k lower. Maybe that is some sort of barometer for success in America? I have no idea.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Better than I expected for Xenoblade, definitely. Not too horrible. About 2 years too late, but that's another argument.

And I believe Dragona has officially lost the prediction :(

Pretty much. The system still has life in it, and I'm glad games like Xenoblade can still do reasonably well (although this is definitely not an outstanding performance) but it's amazing how poorly the system has been handled in certain respects.

Ah, poor Dragona - I thought she was being rather OTT, and given that just between Xenoblade's week 1 figures and Reginleiv's last known total we're already sitting at 112k, I think there's a touch of crow in order ;-)

Monster Hunter 3 has a similar LTD to the original Galaxy, and that one has much been bigger than Galaxy 2 in their first three weeks. Do you really think Galaxy 2 will have extraordinary legs to double its LTD in the next 6-12 months?

I should also mention that store promos/advertising for the game is slowly dwindling away in favor of Blue Ocean titles and Xenoblade.

Uploaded this on my Twitter earlier (I use it to post sales musings from time to time before posting on GAF). When I initially saw the sign, I thought Xenoblade was sold out. But then upon closer inspection, the sold out sign actually refers to a Love Plus+ DSi LL hardware bundle that could only be pre-ordered on Yodobashi's online website. Guess they had nothing else to support the sign with. :lol :lol

Sure, why not. These are usual legs for Mario games. It's already performing way better than Galaxy without the price drops the original had. A big piece of December sales is already covered.

Monster Hunter 3 is a completely different situation. Overshipped, with price drops and very frontloaded. The only similarity there is with Galaxy is that they both are million sellers.

There are plenty of reasons for "why not." :)

I disagree with the present assessment that these legs are "usual" for Mario games when every 3D Mario game has been released under a different environment. Sure, Mario games do sell for a decent period of time, but in the context of Mario, I consider only SM64, SM64DS, NSMB, and NSMB Wii to have real legs (as well as MK Wii, MP series).

I simply am still baffled as to how anyone can expect Galaxy 2 to match Galaxy 1 right now. Galaxy 2 basically has to catch up to many games that had even higher debuts than it did but did not sell 1 Million (Dissidia, Crisis Core, Peace Walker, MH3, etc). I don't buy the notion that all those games are too different to compare. Galaxy 2 is not a Blue Ocean game, so it certainly can't be compared to those games either. But good luck.

Hmm. I do think that a Mario/Nintendo game is just inherently going to have better legs than the games you listed. But I also think its too early to say that SMG2 will reach 1. Yes, it looks good now, but I think Chris is underestimating the December weeks still to come for the first Galaxy.

I'll wait a few more weeks before making any firm pronouncements, but for now I'll stick with a 900Kish prediction.

Just to be clear I never said Galay 2 will reach for sure 1 million, but that it will have a LTD similar to Galaxy. With that I meant 900k, 1000k or 1100k. Weekly sales (and especially 3rd week) so far are very good.

Sunshine is a good game to compare Galaxy 2 sales trend. Dissidia, Crisis Core, Peace Walker will be outsold from Galaxy 2 even though they had much bigger openings.

Yeah. It's down to whether Galaxy 2 will have the legs to override its present lag (relative to those games). The thing about the games I've mentioned is that they have what I'd call "mini-legs." They have big debuts, and last some weeks, but don't have the fuel for long term sales. But they're not dead-after-arrival games, either. Typically, they're games above 400K (350K also acceptable) but with first week to LTD ratios of below 60%. And they tend to sell outside the Top 30/50. I consider Galaxy 2 a good candidate for mini-leg status. Galaxy 1 had inflated legs, by comparison, thanks to the holiday.

he he. Galaxy 2 won't need the holiday bump:D

This makes me smile. :D
Also glad to see Xenoblade doing decent numbers. It well definitely pass 100k.

I'm thinking over the next few weeks Galaxy 2 goes something like 55k ---> 35k ---> 25k ---> 20k ---> 15k (then it will get a boost for Obon near the end of July/early August)

LTD wise, probably over 800k and under 850k.

Also just noticed, Wii hardware didn't really get a bump from Galaxy 2 the past 2 weeks huh?

Small but noticeable rise for the Wii indeed. :)

By the way, a few of the big retailers dropped their prices on DS hardware early, hence the lack of huge drop in sales. Sales will go up with the new colors and official price drop, but the effect may be subdued.

Metal Gear!

Oh well, it did really well, even if it probably has no chance of meeting the LTD of Snake Eater.

I wonder how long the DS price drop effect will last.

These platforms don't seem to be effected by much anymore, so it will be interesting to see how much of a sustainable boost price cuts can give.

Bebpo says the game hasn't been pushed at all in Japan and the game was only "revealed" a few months ago. Obviously it was a hyperbole.
Bebpo doesn't live in Japan, though. There's been lots of TV ads featuring AKB48 stars, they've been handing out A4 brochures and loads of flyers and stuff. The marketing is probably a bit behind NSMB and Mario Kart Wii, but still way above other stuff they've released in the last year.

Next week will be really big for DSi, considering the already-sold-out Love++ DSi bundle...
