It did so poorly compared to Layton though.
Hopefully this doesn't mean that's also gonna be way down now.

EDIT: Oh wait, thought you were talking about Sloane and MacHale.
This new one seems to have done really horribly though.

I think they are just overdoing it with the puzzle games right now. They still have that "Sloane and MacHale's Mysterious Story" game in the Top 10, which released only some weeks ago. There really was no need for another two puzzle games.
I don't think that'll affect Layton, though.

jj984jj

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
These 2 games are part of Akira Tago's Brain Exercises 4 volume series and are even cheaper than Sloane and McHale, it's all part of Atamania that Level 5 revealed last year.

Based on the latest Famitsu hardware numbers...
PSP comparisons: After 235 weeks, PSP is where PS2 was at 189.0 weeks (October 12, 2003), where DS was at 101.8 weeks (November 10, 2006), and where GBA was at 158.8 weeks (April 3, 2004).

X360 comparisons: After 183 weeks, X360 is where GCN was at 17.0 weeks (January 6, 2002), where PS3 was at 38.0 weeks (July 29, 2007), and where Wii was at 5.5 weeks (January 4, 2007).

PS3 comparisons: After 135 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 45.3 weeks (January 9, 2001), where PSP was at 68.4 weeks (March 29, 2006), where GCN was at 124.8 weeks (January 31, 2004), and where Wii was at 35.5 weeks (August 1, 2007).

Wii comparisons: After 132 weeks, Wii is where GBA was at 98.5 weeks (February 6, 2003), where DS was at 77.1 weeks (May 22, 2006), where PS2 was at 116.1 weeks (May 20, 2002), and where PSP was at 167.1 weeks (February 18, 2008).

DSi comparisons: After 32 weeks, DSi is where GBASP was at 46.4 weeks (December 31, 2003) and where DSL was at 16.4 weeks (June 20, 2006).

Based on the latest Media Create hardware numbers...
DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 61.1 / 38.9 bring total shares to 68.3 / 31.7. If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 530.9 weeks (August 17, 2019).

X360 vs PS3: Weekly shares of 44.5 / 55.5 bring total shares to 24.7 / 75.3. This is the highest weekly share X360 has had relative to PS3 among the weeks where it didn't actually outsell PS3. If PS3 stopped selling and X360 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 267.5 weeks (July 31, 2014).

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares of 35.2 / 64.8 bring total shares to 28.4 / 71.6. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 486.5 weeks (October 11, 2018).

Week over week, nothing fluctuates more than 2.2K in either direction.
X360

Through the first twenty-four weeks of the year, overall sales are down. However, the systems can be split into camps of 3 up and 3 down. Here's how the year-to-date year-over-year percents stand as of now.

PS3 takes a big dive this week. Last week it was 27.5% ahead of the year before; this week it is down to 10.8%. This is because last year's numbers just hit the MGS4 bump.

Wii: -63.9%
DSL+DSi: +2.4%
PS2: -49.8%
PS3: +10.8%
PSP: -45.1%
X360: +234.8%

Home hardware: -38.8%
Portable hardware: -24.7%
Sum of all hardware: -30.4%

7/2: Shin Sangoku Musou 5 (BEST)
7/9: Siren: New Translation (BEST)
7/16: Pro Yakyuu Spirits 6, Tears to Tiara (Budget), KoF XII

Yup. There is a some stuff coming that could do ok numbers, but nothing to prop up hardware sales.

I think we've been saying there should be a price drop for the past year, and Sony haven't listened.

But now they have no choice really. That stock absolutely must be cleared out.

You don't magically publish a game and expect it to sell xx based on the perception that people should be interested in any game developers have put effort into and that games are entitled to sales. That's bull.

Yet that's exactly how the majority here react to a game doing less than 30k it's first week, heck even if it's a DS game.

Or they could, you know, make games that people don't want to sell after playing for 5 hours. :p

If you wanna release a game that most people will want to sell back after a day, and sell it for over 50 bucks, I would say the market is actually in the right position. It should always favor the consumers. :p

Which is why I'm amazed why Japanese publishers have taken note of this. Just look at most successful Japanese titles right now: Monster Hunter, Wii ____, Animal Crossing, Phantasy Star Portable, Persona, etc. these are all games that are made to be played for a long duration of time as well as be played in many ways as well. It's clear that the Japanese market is moving in this direction of games with long legs in playtime.

I personally don't mind the move towards more replay value. Japan seems to be doing it through longer games, the US seems to be doing it through online.

Is a slim PS3 coming?
Yes

Without official confirmation of a date, there's no reason for urgency to clear out existing stock. That was my point. If/When one comes, it'll probably launch with the PSmote/PSeye combo, and that's not coming until next Spring. He made it sound like they needed to clear the shelf space now, and that's simply not the case for that scenario. That's why I asked if something had changed, and maybe I just missed it. Apparently, I didn't.

I really don't know what's standard, but would they need mockup box art for something that won't be released for nearly a year?

I'm not sure, but I'd have to assume not.

As for a possible release date though, both GAF's own Sony leak and the Ars Mole have been pointing toward September for an announcement and release. Given their track records so far, I'm inclined to believe them on this one.

There was also a recent rumor it would be announced at TGS, which is in September this year conveniently enough.

But yeah, I don't think they'll fire sale the current ones so much as just ship a lot less of them out to stores since they're not selling that horribly as it is. At least, not badly enough that they won't be able to clear most of their existing inventory if they stop shipping them.

gofreak

GAF's Bob Woodward
They don't need to clear channels ahead of a slim launch.

A price differential between a new slim and the older units would keep both moving if both available together. It would also be better for Sony's financials, and would align with the feature difference.

i.e. I think 80GB PS3 @ $299, 120GB PS3 Slim at $349-399 toward the end of this year is likely.

The other alternative is that they don't really have that much stock to push and they can do it without a cut in advance of the slim..but I'm not sure if that's likely.

If those box leaks are true, I find it hard to believe its already into production and won't come out until Spring. Also, I assume the reason for the increased hardware projection is mostly because of the Slim-not having it out until next Spring makes it almost meaningless.

Do you see the PSmote on the box?

They won't officially announce the slim until a closer launch date. (August - GC or September - TGS).

The slim will be on stores this year. They are projecting 13 million consoles shipped this fiscal year for a reason.

Famitsu Software Stuff

So though it passed this several weeks ago, thanks to popping back up on the Top 30 we can see for sure that Animal Crossing: Wild World (95) has joined the 5+ million club, joining Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire (855), New Super Mario Bros. (241), and Pokémon Diamond/Pearl (261).
2009-07-31

Looking at a launch-aligned version, we can see that Wild World took a lot longer to reach 5 million than those other games. Diamond/Pearl took about 200 days. Ruby/Sapphire about 400 days. NSMB about 600 days. Wild World about 1300 days.
400

The only modern game left in my database over 4 million but not over 5 million is Brain Age 2... which I believe actually passed 5 million earlier this year, but its failure to make any Top 30 lists since January 2008 makes it harder to keep track of.

Out of sight since February, Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel (3293) has in the between gained about 50K. As was the case when last we saw it it's tracking above the first game (271) but below the second (2673).
400

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (3586) continues performing... adamantly in-between. It's not doing as well as the original (984) or second (2352) PS2 games, but its second week number puts it past the total of GBA Chain of Memories (1645) and all Final Mix releases.

Then, I'd say it's a missed opportunity. Yes, a Slim launch before December would help them meet their 13m FY forecast, but they'd be seriously undermining any hopes to make the PSmote/PSeye/PSThree a standard SKU for developers to target (i.e. what should be a long-term goal, in my opinion). They'd essentially have to relaunch the PS3 twice in a year or relegate the PSmote/PSeye combo to the status of "just another peripheral."

I agree that a Slim will likely launch before Spring with a box having already been made for it, and it's the only serious option (along with a price drop) to meet this FY's target. However, I think long-term they'd have been better off putting it all together in the same box. Obviously that would mean delaying Slim's launch longer, but that would also put a lot more of the PSmote/PSeye combo in gamer's hands right at the start.

Thread resurrect?

Seems SCEJ doesn't like latest PSP hardware numbers but at the same time it doesn't want to do two new colors so...

19800Y PSP in red and blue get 3140Y MHP2G (so 22940Y separately), both together at 21000Y on the 23rd of July

Most appealing piece of software for the system sure, new colors didn't work out this year sure and there isn't even a 500k game in sight sure... still quite disappointing to bundle a 16 months old game which has already sold more than 3m rather than giving some new titles a better chance. Such a coincidence its right between DQIX and MH3 too, hmm.

Launch Slim this year with a PSEye standard-bundle. Replace DS3 with WandleShock in the boxes next spring.

Sales for the Wii were in the 13-14k range (Famitsu, M-C has both Wii and PS3 higher) so I'm betting that this little bump is caused by one game that will be released tomorrow.

wiisportsresort_2.jpg

Not having the game bundled with the console will cause that the hardware bump will be more spread between weeks before and after its release.

the first game wasn't bundled with the system in Japan so i dont think it well make a big impact on the Hardware sales

Maybe you want the Famitsu YTD for the PSP and the DS, but the OP in this thread has the Media Create YTD for the PSP and the DS up to the previous week at least. I guess that you can add maybe around 20-30k to the PSP and maybe around 30-50k for the DS to these numbers to get this week's number as well (or what until Friday to see the exact Media Create hardware numbers) :)

__. [PSP] Diamond and The sound of a Gun shot (Juusei to Diamond) (SCE) - 2,400 / NEW

In order;
I'm truly surprised that Tomodachi Collection did as well as it did. I mean, obviously the Animal Crossing-style social sim formula works, and obviously Miis are somewhat of an object of fascination, so I get how it sold that well... I'm just a little surprised because what little I've seen of the game seems kinda unremarkable.

KH it's a little strange that sales have picked up. I wonder what caused the bump? Either way, its current total is around where I expected it to stop lifetime, and it's still selling well, so that's a triumph.

Half-Minute Hero doing better than I expected. Could probably make 60-70k lifetime, which has gotta be profitable.

Very sad to see Diamond and the Sound of a Gun Shot fail. Excellent box art, looks like a great game, catchy title... but that's a pretty bad number even for a visual novel :/
