while we are on this stupid subject that has nothing to do with MC and on that has nothing to do with the fact that i doesn't have an affcet on whether a title will sell or not i amalso angry that TWEWY and No More heroes didn't sell over there considering how awsome they are.

The number of copies GoW3 sold in Japan in it's first week has nothing to do with MC? :lol

Damn those youge kusoge games!
sorry

What's the best selling western game in Japan this generation? I'm not seeing any in the Top 20 Wii and Top 25 PS3 lists above.

Sony wins the HW battle once again. Nintendo is slipping!

Apparently the dearth of new DS releases was because Nintendo told publishers the new system was coming out this year in Japan. Wii? *insert schuelma comments* As has been discussed repeatedly before, the near total lack of third-party support (and now first-party support) has really made an impact in Japan, as opposed to what's seen in the rest of the world. They still need to come out with Wii 2, though. With DS2 in 2010 in Japan, Wii 2 in 2011 in Japan fits a little better now.

Maybe you're right, but that's not my point when I said that. If GOW3 were made by a big japanese company (that's why I mentioned Konami, Sega or Capcom), unmodified and exactly the way it is, it would be a major seller there. I don't know why they behave like this because, IMO, GOW3 has a very japanese style friendly gameplay.

Really. THIS old chestnut? On Gaf?

God of War kind of sits in a weird uncomfortable place as far as Japan goes. The main character is a genuinely bad guy who behaves in ridiculously selfish and sadistic manner, which is certainly the Western idea of a bad-ass, but doesn't gel well with Eastern ideas of a protagonist. It's based on Greek mythology, which Japanese are certainly aware of and interested in but not to the extent that Westerners are.

It's got a high CERO rating, always D and now Z, which means it can't be advertised as much as other games and in the case of Z, often isn't even displayed in view of minors. Even with the cuts, it's still an incredibly grotesque game, and while anime may have fooled people into thinking the Japanese love gore, the truth is that a majority of people don't like it.

And then there's the gameplay. It's too difficult/involved for the Musou crowd (such as that crowd is anymore) and not difficult/involved enough for the DMC/Bayonetta crowd (such as that crowd has ever been).

I think there's awareness that it's a Western game (it's part of the sales pitch in many stores' displays), and while that's not the death knell it once was, there is still a stigma that likely comes from years of Acclaim/Eidos/Activision oceans of console crap combined with the near-total absence of a PC market outside of hentai games.

Given everything going against God of War, I think it carves out very respectable numbers in Japan.

Great numbers for Hokuto Musuo. I hope this paves the way for a wider variety of Musou games, cause that RotTK story is starting to wear on me. New settings and new stories will keep the series from stagnating as it has lately (it'd also be nice if they'd ever include 4 player split screen play, but I've just about given up on that bit).

do you have a source? i've been wondering for a while now why DS releases have seemed to slow down significantly, all major publishers released very few big DS games in 2009 compared to 2008. i figured it was because they were unsatisfied with sales or something.

wow. just wow... thanks. its a miracle it even got to the top 10 with all that going against it. and fist was rated D and got yakuza 4 numbers and that game was also rated D.

God of War for the Japanese is somewhat like Yakuza for the Americans. Not a perfect comparison but I think they both hit that cultural resistance more so than a lot of other games in both places.

That said, I think GoW's Greek mythology theme speaks about as much for Japanese tastes for Greek culture/history as Mario games would as an indicator for Japanese people's interest level in Italian culture.

Nah it'll probably be a slow burner and bundled to hell and back. IIRC GT5P did about 100k week 1 and 500k LTD with both versions (rough numbers). I have trouble seeing GT5 do ~500k week 1. (of course, duckroll doesn't think it'll do that lifetime :p)

And yeah, I wouldn't gauge Japanese interest in Greek mythology by the sales of God of War, but a North American is far more likely to say "Hell YEAH" at the idea of ripping off Zeus's wang and beating him upside the head with it.

I've been there many times, i met many people there and also my gf is japanese, so i could say i know what i'm talking about.
Japanese really loves Italy, for its culture, its history, its places, its art and, of course, for its food.

American console game development took several 4 console generations to regain foothold.

Or you can just thank Microsoft and the fact that pc-gaming has always been the forefront in the west. Really, almost the entirety of western hits come from long-running PC gaming companies, giving console gamers their first taste of stuff and expanding gaming to new heights. Being a long-time PC gamer I remember wondering just what the bloody fuss about goldeneye was back in the day. I brought fallout the day it came out, Told people it was my favorite game for years and nobody had ever head of it.

The entire topic of PC gaming breathing new life into console gaming is something I would really love to see explored more in depth.

I understand well what you are saying, but just had to point out something., with the exception of Hercules there's nothing else in GoW3 (please correct me if there was another roman named character instead of having its greek name) related to Italy or Rome.

Segata Sanshiro said:
God of War kind of sits in a weird uncomfortable place as far as Japan goes. The main character is a genuinely bad guy who behaves in ridiculously selfish and sadistic manner, which is certainly the Western idea of a bad-ass, but doesn't gel well with Eastern ideas of a protagonist. It's based on Greek mythology, which Japanese are certainly aware of and interested in but not to the extent that Westerners are.

Finally, a voice of reason.

Just to add to that, I don't think people grasp just how important the character and art IS for Japanese gamers. It's a much bigger deal to people than it is in the west. Japan is generally an appearance-oriented culture, and it's often the art-style that really holds back western games in Japan.

Bald guy with big muscles and a grumpy look on his face is NOT what Japanese gamers go for (just as spiky-haired effeminate emo is not what Americans go for).

Ηρακλής (Iraklis) is ''translated'' to Heracles not Hercules.

I think you misunderstood me, or I word myself wrongly. In GoW3 all characters have their greek names, with the exception of Hercules (roman name), it should be Heracles indeed.

I was just making reference to the only "italian" thing in GoW3, as Moor-Angol was talking about japanese love for italian culture while using a greek reference.

Fantastic analysis Segata, well put.

Bald guy with big muscles and a grumpy look on his face is NOT what Japanese gamers go for (just as spiky-haired effeminate emo is not what Americans go for).
Outside of the bald part, how would you define Kenshiro, Chris Redfield, Snow Villiers, and Solid Snake in MGS4?

Even Dragon Quest really: http://i42.tinypic.com/vxbzpk.png

Well, i could say japanese are more interested in italian culture than many of the other european countries.
I've been there many times, i met many people there and also my gf is japanese, so i could say i know what i'm talking about.
Japanese really loves Italy, for its culture, its history, its places, its art and, of course, for its food.
Maybe i've misunderstood your example, but from what i see your example matches perfectly, Mario 5M, Kratos 50k :D

Outside of food and historical sites, I doubt most Japanese people care much about Italy, no more than most westerners I'd say. If anything, France is the European country that most people would have an interest in from my experiences, much more than what I witnessed when I lived in the States.

The 2010 holiday software line up is unknown at the moment for both ps3 and wii. I doubt there is much though in terms of new super mario bros wii, or final fantasy 13 for either console during that coveted christmas slot. Probably dynasty warriors game and zelda wii is my bet.

Just to add to that, I don't think people grasp just how important the character and art IS for Japanese gamers. It's a much bigger deal to people than it is in the west. Japan is generally an appearance-oriented culture, and it's often the art-style that really holds back western games in Japan.

yes, that would also explain, why every hero or heroine in jrpg wears belts and jackets with zips or completly ugly costumes.

Hm, I didn't expect to see Yakuza 4 beat out RE5's opening. How do they compare for second week numbers?
Borrowing from Chris:

2nd week:
[PS3] Yakuza 4 - 83,187 / 467,159 (-78%)
[PS3] Metal Gear Solid 4 - 67,795 / 532,721 (-85%)
[PS3] Resident Evil 5 - 61,483 / 381,073 (-81%)
[PS3] Yakuza 3 - 52,974 / 425,275 (-86%)

(Media-Create)

It's not the best 2nd week (FFXIII), but it's better than the other games with the biggest openings.

I know Nintendo is really stupid right now, but even I don't think they would give retailers 3-4 week's notice for a relatively substantial release.
