I didnt think the DS was gonna get another 5 million seller after BA2 made it. Maybe Friend Collection matches Animal Crossing?

Man, it must be so hard for doicare to make that prediction. It's not like there was an official announcement that the game has the highest initial shipment in the series history or anything. Nope.

Not really sales related but I was checking out trade-in rates for PS3 games at Tsutaya today.
Hope anyone looking to trade in FFXIII already did so.

Only a 200 yen trade-in value for FFXIII? That is quite a low amount of money for a game indeed. I guess that pretty much everyone who had had interest in playing FFXIII have already bought, rented or borrowed the game by now.

they don't have a rental service in Japan. Yeah, thats it for FF XIII. I wonder if the greatest hits will sell more than 2k

I don't think we should be thinking about a FFXIII budget release so soon. First they need to do an International release in Japan, and how successful that is will depend on how much new content there is in it. FFXII International did very poorly because there was basically no real new content aside from the gameplay system tweaks. FFX International, FFX-2 International and the KH Final Mix games do very, very well because they actually have a ton of new content and extra stuff not found in the original version nor in the US versions.

That doesn't make sense?

Most used shops have dozens of copies of FFXIII that aren't moving even at 2000 yen. How many more do you think they need? It's worth about as much as Madden 09 at this point.

So is this exceptional compared to other big RPGs or is the low price just due to the huge number sold originally and the relative lack of replayability?

It's basically the "fuck off, we don't want anymore copies" trade-in price. Any higher and they'd get saddled with even more copies destined to do nothing but collect dust for the next xty years.
I first thought that I can buy FF13 used for only 200 Yen, and I started sending PM to CVX to buy one for me :).

Later on, I realized that the 200 Yen is the trade-in price, NOT used purchase price, so I cancel the "PM CVX" thing.
I actually smiled at the bolded part section :D

Uh, well, this is the first FF mainline release I've been in Japan for, so I don't know how it is for series standards, but I haven't seen anything quite like this before in my time here. I mean, naturally DQIX didn't do this, but DQIX's been pretty unusual in terms of legs.

For this to happen you basically have to have a huuuuge release (thus putting a lot of copies out there) combined with high upfront demand for used copies (ensuring the used shops will do all they can to get as many copies as they can) followed by a massive drop in demand such that even new copies are going for as low as half-price by seven or eight weeks after release, all wrapped up in no desire/incentive for buyers to keep their copies after completing the game.

I think if any RPG satisfied all these requirements, something similar would happen, but it's rare. FFXIII is kind of a perfect storm of cotton candy.

MGS4/ the X-box RPGS were very similar, when you have a game sale to close to 40%
of the install base in less then two weeks, and has very little replay value, it's bound to happen.

DQIX actually has replayability though and was purposely designed with measures to slow down the flow to the used market.

MGS4 never got as low as 200 yen. I don't think it's even there *now*. Ditto on the Xbox RPGs, though I wasn't here for Blue Dragon (I could easily imagine it being the case for BD especially because of the system bundles).

DQIX was definitely a very intelligently designed game. They really hit all the right notes for maximizing sales on it, and heck, they're still hitting the right notes even now.

FFXIII isn't really at 200 yen though, that's just one store that has too many copies, saying they don't need more, you can find a bunch of stores that buy X-BOX360's for 500 yen in the same type of deal.

Just browsing a few of the major sites, the actual buy used copy market price is more in then 1430-1800 range.

Exactly. 200 yen isnt a realistic price. For 2 dollars i whould ratter keep the empty ps3 box for replacement and trow away the actual game in the garbage.

So is Strikeforce 2 bad compared to Strikeforce 1 - I haven't seen much pre release about the game anywhere that seemed negative, but haven't seen any post release reviews to compare.

Yes, but this shop prefers keeping their $2 rather than buying a 100th they will probably never sell again and waste space in their attic... It's not so surprising, that's mostly a "do not want" sign.

Looking at the LTD, DS is at a record 29.8million and PSP at 14.3 million (not bad for an also-ran). In other words, pretty much market saturation.

If DS continues at this pace, it should reach the 30 million LTD milestone by the end of April.

thx Kurosaki !

MGS4 the best debut was 3,6k in middle June
at the end of 2009 (6 months) it sold 37k
from January to middle March it sold around 60k and weekly sales are constantly at 3k

interesting to see MGS4 the best sold 22k from the relesase to the end of August (2 months and a half) and this year in the same time the sales were 62k

iirc even Kojima said MGS4 sales were pushed up after new PS3 model was introduced

i wonder how far sales could go, considering MGS has a fanbase around 800k for both PS1 and PS2 chapters

200 yen trade in value for FFXIII, eh? This is clearly because the Japanese version of the game lacked Troy Baker.

i just considered MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3 alone numbers, not counting the best or Subsistance and similar

Considering how low is PS3 userbase compared to PS1 and PS2 when they got a MGS title, i think MGS4 did really well

You can't really count the re-releases as additional fanbase. Not when most of the people buying them most likely bought the original as well. The re-releases are full priced and have substantial additional content.
