Is it actually a good game? I seem to remember that the pre-release buzz around it was fairly bad.

Next week's sales should be a good indicator of Peace Walker's legs... I think it's held up very nicely so far.

Yeah. I'd like to know too. The videos I've seen though make it look more fun than it apparently isnt. The music sounds amazing too.

Apparently it's doing better than MGS4. Seems like 1 million copies in Japan isn't too far from now on.

I guess the theory of the same 700k people buying MGS games every time is now confirmed.

but its going to hit 700k in next 3 weeks.. so is it going to stop selling all of a sudden after that. :S

I think it will hit 900k by the end of the year.. if not more..

And just like that, NDS has another million seller.

Anyone have an up-to-date million seller-list for NDS, maybe comparing it with PS2?

Yes?

MGS3 did 610k in its first two weeks. 130k in its next two weeks. 30k in its next two weeks. 12k in its next 2 weeks. 35k for the rest of time.

MGS4 did 543k in its first two weeks. 52k in its next two weeks. 18k in its next two weeks. 70k for the rest of time.

It might do 750 or 800 by the time it crawls to a stop, but it would be weird for it to stabilize and end up doing 900k at this point.

That theory didn't pan out for MGS Acid, Acid 2 and Portable Ops.

I guess the game that is sitting on top of the charts for the third straight week must be an utter failure to you then.

well this one has co-op on its side. something previous mgs didn't have (i know mgs3 revision and 4 had an online component, but that doesn't affect sales in japan).

it needs to be seen how it affects long term sales, although i'm no good at guessing them looking at first weeks ones.

Portable operation has multiplayer options too, but not as Peace Walker obviosly.

Hey, Super Street Fight IV is still there!

Pretty interesting week so far. A lot of games with long legs in it, NSMB Wii, Mario Kart...

I'm just going to post my comments from the previous thread again, because the numbers are similar and I feel exactly the same.

DQMJ2 should end up with very similar sales to the original. It might or might not pass the original, it's a bit too early to tell, but it's definitely on track to sell about 1.2-1.3 million at least. Very big success for a sequel of a spin-off coming out 4 years after the original, and closely following a ton of other more mainline DQ releases. It really shows the strength of the DQ brand in Japan.

PW is doing well, but the drop off is a bit telling. It's also too early to tell how much leg power the title has just yet, but it doesn't look like it'll pass a million. It'll probably still hit about 800k in the end, but unless it stays in the 40-50k range for several weeks, it doesn't have much chance of breaking MGS3's record. it's also tracking behind Dissidia, which makes 900k+ very unlikely.

It will easily pass 1 million once it's all said and done (re-releases etc).

I don't know about "easily" to be honest. If you only count budget re-releases, I don't think it will be that easy. Like I said, it is now tracking behind MGS3. It's tracking way behind Dissidia, and Dissidia never broke 1 million, even with the UT re-release. If Kojima does decide to release a "Substance" full priced expansion release down the line, and you add that along with all the budget re-releases, then sure, it'll probably pass a million. But that's not much of an achievement at all, since both MGS2 and MGS3 managed that.

Peace Walker was developed with the same intention of Valkyria Chronicles 2 - to appeal to a younger audience and to take advantage of the PSP's multiplayer popularity to expand the fanbase. The fact that both titles appear to be selling the same numbers as their console counterparts indicates to me that this target is not being met.

PW is by no means a failure of course, but I'm not going to shy away from the fact that I don't think it is the smashing success in achieving the goals it set out to accomplish. This was always going to be a primarily JP title, with weaker sales in the US and Europe. If it ends up selling the same amount that MGS2 and MGS3 sold in Japan, then it will most certainly end up being the lowest selling Kojima game in well over a decade.

Interesting analysis, and I think I agree. Hopefully it will sell more though.

[PSP] Secret Game Portable (Yeti)
[PSP] So-Ra-No-Wo-To: Otome no Gojuusou (Compile)
[PSP] Valhalla Knights 2: Battle Stance [Best Collection] (Marvelous Entertainment)
[PSP] Midnight Club: LA Remix [Spike the Best] (Spike)

[WII] Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo)
[WII] Red Steel 2 (Ubisoft)

[PS3] Midnight Club: Los Angeles [Spike the Best] (Spike)

[360] Alan Wake (Microsoft Game Studios)
[360] DeathSmiles IIX (Cave)

[PS2] Pachitte Chonmage Tatsujin 16: Pachinko Hissatsu Shigotojin III (Hackberry)
[PS2] Strike Witches: Anata to Dekiru Koto - A Little Peaceful Days (Russel)
[PS2] Suzunone Seven: Rebirth Knot (Alchemist)
[PS2] Desert Kingdom (Idea Factory)

It's worth predicting only because of Galaxy 2, but unfortunately there isn't any other big seller. SRW OG is maybe the only other game that can do some respectable numbers.

You forgot the PSN release!!!

Holy shit, Medabots DS!

I kind of think Kojima and crew will release a Peace Walker + type expansion pack. But this time, with Infrastructure online play. I'd have to think Peace Walker has done well on PSN. If Persona 3 Portable did 10k on PSN first week or something, I'd imagine that Peace Walker did considerably better.

Yeah, point taken. I was pretty much including a hypothetical substance re-release. Portable Ops got one, sort of.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty 798,185
------------------
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Mega Hits!) 42,160
Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance 147,561
Metal Gear Solid 2 (Konami Collection) 37,595
Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance (Re-release) 47,993
------------------
Total: 1,073,494

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 819,807
------------------
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence 133,339
Metal Gear 20th Anniversary - Snake Eater 25,809
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, The Best 62,095
------------------
Total: 1,041,050

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops 358,277
------------------
Metal Gear 20th Anniversary - Portable Ops 20,776
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops. + Deluxe Pack 38,429
------------------
Total: 417,482
------------------
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus 299,896*
------------------
Total: 717,378*

*Expansion pack, doesn't have the main campaign. (Likely released this way due to disc space limitations of UMD?)

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 686,254 (2008-12-22)
------------------
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (BEST) 37,167 (2009-09-21)
------------------
Total: 723,415

Didn't include the all in 20th Anniversary compilation because I didn't feel like it.

I think somewhere i did read that MGS4 the best has sold over 100k by March 2010.. so by now it should be around 125k for the best ediction..

All of this sounds like it could pan out. I wouldn't mind it if they did another "+" style expansion pack. No doubt they'd be hard pressed to do a re-release with added content when they're already heavily compressing data of the UMD. I'd absolutely buy a cheap expansion pack, especially if it had infrastructure.

Next week releases (27/05/10)

[NDS] Super Robot Wars OG Saga: The Lord of Elemental (Bandai Namco)
[WII] Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo)
[WII] Red Steel 2 (Ubisoft)
[360] Alan Wake (Microsoft Game Studios)
:D

The last (leaked) Famitsu number we had for the best was 128,800 and, for the original, 706,500, which give us ~835,300 for MGS4.
