Besides, we've been over this. NSMB Wii will steal its sales and cut its legs off in due time. That's my prediction and this doesn't change that yet. We saw how much Spirit Track's higher debut than Phantom Hourglass meant in the end.

Famitsu
[NDS] The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo) - 288.282 / 902.386
[NDS] The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (Nintendo) - 320.940 / 677.858

[NDS] The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo) - 302.887 / 907.821
[NDS] The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (Nintendo) - 291.496 / 620.748 (up to 02/05/10)

DS Zeldas had similar openings

Media Create
[WII] Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo) - 250.585 / 1.002.048
[WII] Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo) - 340.000 / 340.000

Galaxy 2 had a much bigger opening than Galaxy 1.

And it will have a much smaller follow-up in these next few weeks. Even if Sunshine were surpassed by Galaxy 2, and that's not really saying all that much, 1 Million and therefore SMG1's numbers are in no way guaranteed.

But, as I have said, I'd love to be wrong.

Did Galaxy 1 also have commercials with Arashi? Not trying to analyze anything, just curious.

Weren't the first day numbers only barely bigger than Galaxy's? This seems to suggest that it should have a slower drop off than Galaxy... although guessing this kind of thing by the first week sales might be a mistake.

That's good!

Probably not. But it is a better first week than SM64, SMS, SM64DS, or SMG had.
Numbers for comparison's sake, please!

Wonderful @Mario Galaxy 2. I hope it will have big enough legs to reach a million, that'd be one great result and would maybe encourage other developers, to try a similar game, too :).

No, it would just tell them that NSMB has quite a wake.

I'm sure a majority of Galaxy 1 owners loved the game, so they turned up faster this time around. Galaxy 1 was a very ambitious move for the series back in 2007, so its adoption was understandably slower and more staggered with the holiday.

Holy shit. The DVD works.

The audience Nintendo is aiming for with the tutorial DVD should turn up at a later date, probably the latter half of June. It'll be up to those consumers to keep Galaxy 2's legs going instead of it turning into the typical adventure game that's done in less than 2 months. I don't think they turned up en masse for the launch week. Since when do the Blue Ocean people turn up for the first week of sales? Even a high debut game like MK Wii probably had the MK DS and legacy fans coming in that week. Nowadays the game sells to the expanded audience.

I was definitely not satisfied with how SMG did in Japan, but with that game as a barometer (i.e. definitely lowered expectations), SMG2 is starting well. Starting. Give it a month before doing any dances. :lol

And it's not like I'm on the Super Mario Galaxy 2 defense force or something. (I'm looking forward to playing it, though.) It just seems ridiculous to me the amount of pessimism about the game in MC threads as far as sales go.

I was being sarcastic about the DVD. If anything helped its first week, it's the fact that people were more enthusiastic for it (as you stated) and, perhaps, some run-off from NSMB Wii.

Is the DVD also planned for the NA and europe versions ?
If so, i can't wait for the "But it only sells because a dvd is included" or "The casuals see it as a 20$ DVD with a little additional charge for the game" excuses.

well hopefully the really big 1st day to first week from galaxy 2 hopefully should lead to a much better 2nd week for 2 than 1 had so just maybe 2 wont need the holiday bump

I was being sarcastic about the DVD. If anything helped its first week, it's the fact that people were more enthusiastic for it (as you stated) and, perhaps, some run-off from NSMB Wii.

What about frontloaded sales? Honestly, should SMG2 do similar numbers to SMG1, I'm expecting SMG2 to sell much more quickly over a shorter period of time. I think it's mostly just fans of the first one buying it day one. At any rate, I'm still not convinced that it will outsell SMG1.

Wait, maybe that's what you meant by saying "people were more enthusiastic"?

If Galaxy 2 has a < 100K second week, that would be a very, very, very, very bad sign, so I hope so. :lol

You do realize that it had much greater growth from first day to first week (still the issue of mixing MC and Fam numbers) than SMG1, right?

Entirely possible. Less likely than this time last week due to the weekend growth, but still a very definite possibility.

If Super Mario Galaxy 2 matches the worst legs a Mario platformer had so far, Super Mario Sunshine, and has already sold 35,52% of its total sales, it will miss a million and end up at 957.207 (close enough to a million, obviously 35% would be enough to reach a million). If it has legs at least as good as the second worst legs a Mario platformer had so far, Super Mario Bros. DX at 29,90%, it will reach 1.137.124 copies sold. So let's hope it outperforms Sunshine's legs, because then it will most likely end up at a million :).

Only problem is with the release of Wii Party so close (July 8th), casuals will most likely be choosing that over SMG2.

Is the DVD also planned for the NA and europe versions ?
If so, i can't wait for the "But it only sells because a dvd is included" or "The casuals see it as a 20$ DVD with a little additional charge for the game" excuses.
Europe has the dvd.

I think that's at least one or two verys too many. SMG's second week was 30.5% of its first week. If SMG2 does that, it would end up with 104K. Wouldn't take much of a blip to place it below.

Nope, thanks for the clarification. I stand by what I said :D.

And it will have a much smaller follow-up in these next few weeks. Even if Sunshine were surpassed by Galaxy 2, and that's not really saying all that much, 1 Million and therefore SMG1's numbers are in no way guaranteed.

But, as I have said, I'd love to be wrong.

It's probably not going to happen, but there's always the chance of NSMB's success bleeding into SMG2 as many have speculated before.

I don't think SMG2 can rely on a late ad push comparing it to NSMB DS, this time. If it follows the second week drop of SMG1, that is bad. That was a worse drop than Sunshine had in its second week.

So, SMG2 did a bit better than my prediction of 250k. Still, I dont see it having "that much" legs now. 500k for the rest of the year, maybe closing in to 600k. But still worse than SMG1.

But that's not what you predicted.

The Wii has a pretty good line-up going into the summer actually. Maybe that will help carry Galaxy 2's sales a bit better.

From the top of my head we have Xenoblade, Wii Party, Dragon Quest spin-off game (Road to Victory?), Sengoku Basara 3, and Metroid: Other M.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 should perform better than the original. Its stronger opening over the original, I believe, is influenced by the stronger awareness of the Mario name due to the result of New Super Mario Bros. Wii success. I expect similar results overseas for that same reason.

Many including myself had expected NSMB DS's massive success to spillover into the original Galaxy. NSMB Wii has a more direct connection, being on the same platform. Nintendo should put Galaxy 2 ads in future copies of NSMB Wii to really get the awareness out there.
