25th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. cleared. Sad to report there's nothing new besides the "25" question blocks and the copyright text. ;p

PSPGo is going to finally sell out of its initial 150K shipment in roughly the next 5 weeks. :lol Someone should chart its weekly rise to heaven to 150K.

I'm really curious to see what they'll do. Make more? Pretend it never happened? It's very exciting.

I'm pretty confident in saying that is it likely Vanquish has not sold 300k worldwide, and will likely never sell more than 400k worldwide. For a multiplatform third person shooter from a big publisher with a worldwide release, that's a pretty substantial failure all around. Mikami has now directed 3 bombas in a row. What a sucker
his producers are
.
Atsushi Inaba and Hiroyuki Kobayashi were probably producing them out of respect on some level, since he was once their superior at Capcom.

That Black DSi is fucking sexy.

Are there any indications that there is demand for the new red Wii? Mario Collection was their last big Japanese release of the year no?

One of these was not a bomb. :)

Oh, I actually honestly forgot about RE4. RE is an established franchise though, the point still stands that in 10 years Mikami has attempted 3 new IPs and none of them were remotely successful.

Donkey Kong just got dated for 9th December, thankfully. And I guess there's flingsmash/resort relaunch. And then Last Story in January. Not *too* shabby really.

I still don't understand how Donkey Kong Land 2 sold so poorly...

Probably something to do with that total only reflecting the first four weeks of sales, since that's all we have on the title. Since it didn't make the Top 100 in 1997 either, it's probably < 200K, though.

We' ve had this conversation before. Being same day with Donkey Kong Country 3 had some impact on Donkey Kong Land 2.

donkey kong land in general was downright awful in comparison to donkey kong country.

its quite impressive what they did on the GB but still it looked horrible.

How do God Eater Burst and WE2011's 2nd week compare to their predecessors Chris1964?

Important thing to remember: this is the 2nd WE released this year(In less then 5 months time) so it's not entirely fair to judge it's performance relative to the past WE(year) releases.

I think it has more to do with the series being absent on home consoles for so long. In absolute terms, the performance is not bad. But I agree that, relatively to former entries, numbers have sucked so far. Let's hope it can climb to 300'000 when it is all said and done.

Good job Konami - even in the one place with no competition it only took 4 years or so to kill the series.

Peace Walker refuses to leave the top 50.

I thought this week would be gone for the first time because it was #49 last week, but now I see it has climbed to #35.

It must be nearing 770-80k at the very least (+ a few thousand digital sales I guess) because it left the top ten with 712k and it has been 21 weeks since that happened. That would also mean that it has sold the first shipment (764k).

Overall I'm still pretty disappointed at Peace Walker's sales performance. The critical acclaim and word of mouth didn't really contribute to very solid sales at all. It performed pretty much on par with all the other Kojima installments of MGS in Japan, which means a total failure in expanding the user base in any significant way. It totally bombed outside of Japan so it's basically Kojima's biggest MGS flop ever when international sales are taken into account.

Really disappointing all round.

Rightfully so. It's only ¥2480 at many big stores now.

But that's the usual for most 6 months old games, no?
I mean costing half of the original price. And not many of them keep charting after that time.

You have to consider that Peace Walker had many changes that could put many traditional fans off. Say the graphic novel cutscenes and breaking the gameplay into small misions. Maybe it expanded the audience (MH fans) but at the cost of some traditional MGS fans.

Outside of Japan? Yeah, megaflop.

But I keep wondering why KP can make 3d cutscenes for MGS3D when they have to redo the graphics but PW only had like one real 3d cutscene.

It's only usual for other bombas, such as Inazuma Eleven 3 or MH3. :p

The only games that get discounted without qualifying for bomba status are Best Price or PS the Best re-releases.

So you can't find games released in the same period (Kenka Bancho 4, Dragon Quest Monster Joker 2, Yakuza 4, Hokuto Musou and the likes) for half the original price in stores now?

I thought that was the usual in Japan, but I've not been there so obviously I trust your word.

Definitely not DQMJ2 or Yakuza 4. Hokuto Musou 360 was in the bomba bin at some point, IIRC. Not sure about Kenka Banchou 4, but I doubt it.

Games only get prematurely discounted if there is clearly a difficulty in selling them otherwise.

You have to consider that Peace Walker had many changes that could put many traditional fans off. Say the graphic novel cutscenes and breaking the gameplay into small misions. Maybe it expanded the audience (MH fans) but at the cost of some traditional MGS fans.

It doesn't matter. You're not "expanding" the audience if you gain new ones at the cost of existing fans. That's not expansion, that's just substitution. Sengoku Musou 3 had this exact same problem. They believe that they did indeed get new audiences into the title, but at the cost of the regular fanbase. The result? Still a bomba.

What's even more important to note is that MGS is a franchise where the overseas sales far outnumber the Japanese sales traditionally. If the Japanese sales for Peace Walker did not grow from the regular sales at all, and it is a total flop outside of Japan, then the entire release can be viewed as a substantial failure.

Ah, I didn't know that. I thought that after six months or so games had already dropped to a cheaper price due to second hand copies and the release of new games.

Not saying PW followed the same pattern, because it clearly was overshipped at first and was discounted much earlier than that.

Well, Sengoku Musou sold half of what the previous game sold and didn't include big changes.

Peace Walker was a really big bomba outside of Japan, but common sense makes me thing that they were not expecting MGS4 numbers or even bigger numbers in EU and NA than japanese sales. They were obviously catering the game to the Portable OPS and MH crowd.

Please stop shifting goal posts. Konami expected 3 million worldwide for Peace Walker. It ended up shipping 1.47 million worldwide so far, and the shit sales outside of Japan mean that it will never get another shipment ever. The game is a failure no matter what angle you look at it from.

Well, technically, he isn't moving anything. :p

1. They expected 3 million worldwide out of PW. That's below MGS4's 5 million, so they clearly were not expecting MGS4 numbers.
2. They wanted to expand the userbase in Japan, so I guess selling 1 million there would have done just that. Perhaps 900K.
3. That leaves around 1 million apiece for NA and EU/AU. That's also not really "even bigger numbers for EU and NA than japanese sales."

But yes, Peace Walker is bomba. It was supposed to be MGS5. Now we know why they dropped the number. :lol

I think that's the number for Metal Gear series not Peace Walker alone.

Well, if he's not shifting anything, then he's just blind. Because PW is clearly not anywhere near the success it was expected to be in Japan either. It's just a failure all round.

What other Metal Gear title has sold any significant number of units in this business term? :p

I personally had a problem with the Konami hype machine the game got. I had to cover the game's pre-launch press conference (a month before launch) and again at launch in Japan, and it was just all sorts of ridiculous. Closing down Uniqlo in Harajuku, having launch events in multiple cities, a world tour, music singles, t-shirts, buying a Famitsu perfect, and the whole kitchen sink was just setting their numbers up for disappointment. It's as if Konami didn't have much confidence on the game selling on its own merit.

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 was released at the same time, and didn't need this overblown hype machine to back it. And it still sold more than Peace Walker. Peace Walker has never been number one on the charts, yet you think it would have conquered the whole country. :lol

Metal Gear Solid sells some thousands every quarter even if there aren't new releases.

Q1 2010 Metal Gear: 1.27 million (Q1 2009 0.16 million)

I think it has more to do with the series being absent on home consoles for so long. In absolute terms, the performance is not bad. But I agree that, relatively to former entries, numbers have sucked so far. Let's hope it can climb to 300'000 when it is all said and done.

quite a few kids in my school think it doesn't look fun, though a few say they will ask for it for X-mas.

Where am I saying it meet expectations? I personally think it sold good in Japan seeing it wasn't a numbered release and had changes that could turn traditional fans off while not having the guarantee that the MH crowd would eat it up.

But knowing the first shipment, it is obvious that Konami expected more.

And everywhere else the game tanked.

I'm just surprised about the game still charting high on the Top 50, six months after its release when it has been on the bomba bin for a long time while not having received the MH/FFXIII 980Y clearance pricedrop.

I think you be better off blaming Kojima productions for those examples, they love their world tours/ being in the spotlight(castlvania is getting similar treatment). They really want to be rock star movie director types.

I actually talked to the producer of the game and they said the Uniqlo party was just a small event due to situations they weren't able to have a huge launch party like they originally wanted.

Spiegel:

Yeah, all games that aren't nintendo that aren't limited distribution can be found 6months later around 50-60% of the original priced used. The only places that re-stock new games after a month or two are the big retailers/toy stores, thus over-supply problems aren't a problem, new game prices don't drop.

If that's the only sacrifice they had to made, then I'd say they made it out pretty well. I have to admit though. The food was good enough for me to skip dinner that night. :lol

Yep, I am still baffled to this day how they ever thought it was a good idea to move to handheld. It was totally obvious that increased sales in Japan were never going to outweigh the losses internationally. I just hope it was really cheap to make so it wasn't a complete financial disaster.
