Wow at Fossil Fighters 2. I wonder if it will get localized. The first one didn't really blow up the charts if you know what I'm saying.

Well, it didn't need to. It actually was one of the better-selling DS title Nintendo published which was a new IP, at least around there. It sold >100k with two months so I think it did well.

So Monster Hunter Portable 2G is finally out of the top 30, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is out of the top 50 altogether...

Both Move and Kinect are such total failures in Japan. It's like the start of this generation all over again - Sony vs MS competing to see who can fail harder.

Japan has got to be the hardest market to fool.. not that move/kinect can't be nice accessories but it's like everyone there "smelled" it was not going to be worth it...

What do you expect them to do? Build hardware to only cater to the japanese market?
In this generation the disconnect between the japanes market and the rest of the world became glaring obvious. This goes for software as well as for hardware (see PSP f.i. for an opposite example).

26,000 day 1 is bad? Give Kinect time. I expect it to snowball with word of mouth. I'll bet anyone this number is only going increase. Kinect will be >20,000 each week for the rest of the year

Nintendo sees no disconnect, so obviously they're doing something very right. :p

Probably worthwhile contenders for prediction:

[PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom 3
[PSP] Kamen Rider: Climax Heroes Os
[WII] Kamen Rider: Climax Heroes Os
[WII] Taiko Drum Master Wii 3
[PS3] Tales of Graces F
[PS3] Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage - International
Want to have this up early so resuming the discussion, there's also Momotaro DS, Konami's Penguin 3 DS and SD Gundam that should also do reasonable numbers (shin-chan and beyblade maybe). From duckroll list I only question Ken's Rage Musou, since its a budget international release, I'm not really sure it can do much more than a budget re-release.

We can also spice things up since its a special week, maybe doing another ranking for MHP3 prediction alone, or adding a PSP hardware prediction (should be good for a change).

Gran Turismo 5 launched yesterday, but there are few signs of it having had an exceptional launch. It felt more like a release-of-the-week launch rather than something special or big. Given that GT5 is supposed to be the second or third biggest game in the PS3's history, after FFXIII and perhaps MGS4, the launch itself felt a bit par-for-the-course. I think even Biohazard 5 had more buzz around its launch than GT5 did.

That's not to say it won't have a big launch, because I'm still expecting between 300K and 500K for first week sales, but the overall buzz didn't seem to quite be there for this release. It might have something to do with the relatively sudden nature of the 11/25 release date. PS3 hardware should increase again this week, thanks to that nice blue hardware bundle.

:D Yeah, I´ll give you that.
But with Japans move towards being more handheld centric, do you expect it to be a given, that Nintendo will be able to repeat this success with their next home console there?

I agree with the other titles, but I didn't select them because there are simply too many titles which will probably sell decently next week. I picked the ones I was personally a bit more interested in. It's just an issue of personal taste.

For Hokuto, the reason I picked it was because I thought it would be interesting to see how it would do as a re-release since the original sold quite a bit. Although, we have indeed seen that such re-releases are hit or miss. Even budget re-releases like White Knight Chronicle EX with new content don't sell very significant numbers. So... yeah who knows.

So just like every where else , it's amazing that GT is Sony biggest IP and they hardly do any advertising for it .

Thanks! I didn't know another one was coming out. This one's completely different from the other 2 though (seemingly in a good way). Is the anime still popular?

Yep, there's too many right now but there's a bunch that seems difficult to know where they will land (other than them all seem like <50k), specially those not being usually preordered in a big way (momotaro, taiko...).

Is there anyone for/against including a PSP hardware prediction in it? That one should be a >100k lock. Will try putting up an 8-set entry without adding a third ranking for MHP3 (after all it'll be pretty irrelevant in the percentages one but crucial in the units one).

Why not? How do DDR games sell usually?

Anyways, had to laugh at the fact that Dance Evolution outsold Sonic Colors, which is supposedly the best Sonic in a decade or whatever.

Hmmm interesting. If the actual numbers do match, I'm sure Koei (Zill O'll), Level 5 (Ni no Kuni) and Square Enix (3rd Birthday) will be disappointed.

I'm hoping Dangaanronpa will sell well!

Ni no Kuni is disappointing? That shipment is very high. Zill O'll wasn't expected to sell and 3rd Birthday's performance remains a question.

Maybe I remembered it wrong, but I thought Level 5 said they want every game they make to be a million seller?

And if I recall usually the Zill O'll series sell 50,000+... Would have thought that it would have a stronger base by now I guess.

Ni no Kuni is certainly "low" enough to avoid that chance of becoming contender for the bomba bin, yet high enough that they're not caught off guard if the game takes off right away. Pretty sure the Magic Master is also holding it up from having a higher shipment.

It's funny because earlier in the week you literally couldn't even get a pre-order around here due to apparent high demand, yet day of release there were lots of copies sitting on shelves. I guess everyone that cared pre-ordered, makes sense I guess.

Are you suggesting that if Ninokuni gets an initial shipment of 450k that it will not be able to go on to sell a million copies?

Ok, I just couldn't turn it into 8, so its 9 predictions (new record) like this:

Prediction League (29/11-05/12)

[NDS] Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Miniland Mayhem (Nintendo) -
[NDS] Momotaro Railway: World (Hudson) -
[NDS] A Penguin's Troubles: The World (Konami) -
[PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (Capcom) -
[PSP] Hardware combined (3000, Go, MH LE) -
[PSP] Kamen Rider: Climax Heroes Os (Bandai Namco) -
[WII] Kamen Rider: Climax Heroes Os (Bandai Namco) -
[WII] Taiko Drum Master Wii 3 (Bandai Namco) -
[PS3] Tales of Graces F (Bandai Namco) -

Things to note, MHP3rd is a Wednesday release (so its 5 days of sales unlike usual 4) and the PSP hardware prediction is for the full week.

Deadline is actually before because of MHP3rd early release. I set:
Countdown to Tuesday, 30 November 2010, 23:00:00 (UTC/GMT time) (that is 11PM GMT / 8AM Japan / 6PM US EST / 5PM CST / 3PM PST)

That really would be a surprisingly low shipment. Maybe it's just because Andria Sang covers every ever so insignificant tweet about 3rd birthday, but I always had the impression SE had grand plans for the game.

There's still a full month before the game is out, so shipment numbers could go up by the time it actually releases. Even then, I expect like 200k+ at most for an initial shipment. I really don't think the game will do more than 400-500k LTD to be honest. That's the ideal internal target for the developers too.

Food for thought: PE2 was released in Japan on 16th Dec 1999. It sold 172,463 in the first week. T3B is coming out 11 years later, as a third person shooter RPG, with no multiplayer, and it is expected to be a short game not lasting more than 10+ hours.

The ideal target for S-E is 500k.

I did some changes to the database. The tracking period and the release date are now visible.

{23/03/98 - 27/12/98} 0020. [PS1] Parasite Eve (Square) {29/03/98} - 422.985 / 994.423

seems like the PSP is going to be the best selling console/ handheld this year in Japan. kinda sucks for Sony they didn't find their "Monster Hunter" for the western markets.

The PSP is currently just under 300,000 units behind the DS, I don't know if Monster Hunter can close that gap.

I also think it's unlikely myself. The first 4 million likely buyers all own PSP systems already. That said, it's possible that the Nintendo fans who bought their port of G and Tri without playing the PSP versions will migrate over and be responsible for a lot of new PSP purchases.

I'm expecting an overall effect similar to Pokemon BW, which raised DS sales, but not astronomically. The holiday season will just make the PSP's rise from MHP3 more pronounced.

Are you suggesting that if Ninokuni gets an initial shipment of 450k that it will not be able to go on to sell a million copies?

Frankly I don't think it will hit a million. The Studio Ghibli brand should make the game more frontloaded than the usual Level 5 release.

I would think the exact opposite. Ghibli's mainstream appeal gives the game a good chance at having even better legs than their usual properties do.
