As an aside S&P2 likely could have bombed just as badly on the 360. It's an extremely niche genre(I think in the past decade there have been less than 10 similar games..probably less than 5 even). I remember Xbox owners doing a hell of a job supporting PD Orta.
I can only hope Sin and Punishment 2 is half as awesome as Orta. I would kill for a new Panzer Dragoon with IR controls. Hell, I'd kill for a new Panzer Dragoon period.

Yeah increasing development costs would have been a great idea.
And pitting it directly against Bayonetta.

That's really awesome, thanks. Can't wait for the final numbers next week, but I think I overshot a little too much on Tekken 6 for PS3. The rest of the numbers are still looking good though! :D

Edit: Looks like a TON of people got burned hard by the power of Bayonetta 360! :lol

PS3 comparisons: After 154 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 56.8 weeks (March 30, 2001), where PSP was at 84.7 weeks (July 21, 2006), where GCN was at 176.5 weeks (January 26, 2005), and where Wii was at 47.9 weeks (October 28, 2007).

A little fun fact;

Based on your numbers

PS3 comparisons: After 150 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 54.0 weeks (March 11, 2001), where PSP was at 80.2 weeks (June 20, 2006), where GCN was at 170.8 weeks (December 17, 2004), and where Wii was at 42.7 weeks (September 21, 2007).
PS3 comparisons: After 151 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 55.1 weeks (March 19, 2001), where PSP was at 82.1 weeks (July 3, 2006), where GCN was at 172.1 weeks (December 27, 2004), and where Wii was at 44.8 weeks (October 5, 2007).
PS3 comparisons: After 152 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 55.7 weeks (March 23, 2001), where PSP was at 83.3 weeks (July 11, 2006), where GCN was at 172.8 weeks (December 27, 2004), and where Wii was at 46.3 weeks (October 16, 2007).
PS3 comparisons: After 153 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 56.3 weeks (March 27, 2001), where PSP was at 84.0 weeks (July 16, 2006), where GCN was at 173.6 weeks (January 6, 2005), and where Wii was at 47.2 weeks (October 22, 2007).

Shows that

Code:
PS3	PS2		PSP		GCN
150	54		80,2		170,8
151	55,1		82,1		172,1
152	55,7		83,3		172,8
153	56,3		84		173,6
154	56,8	2,80	84,7	4,50	176,5	5,70

Its steadily loosing to PS2, and gaining a bit on PSP/GCN.

Awesome!
My two biggest errors was giving too much for Bayonetta's 360 numbers, and of course the faith in an FF spinoff...

Hmmm, didn't we go through the same thing when the PSP outsold the DSL for a few weeks?

That's sadly exactly what I expected. What a shame.

Assume it still gets released outside of Japan, perhaps it'll pull a No More Heroes.

Of course, that's just naivety at this point.

Can't get much smaller. Minimum width and depth are dictated by the 5.25" disc format, and height is pretty low already. They'd basically have to remove the Gamecube controller ports to reduce height any further, but there's really no need. It's tiny as it is.

Why is everyone stressing out about S&P2? They showed it during E3, me thinks everyone should calm down.

On the other hand, I'm European ofcourse. NoE will release this one for sure

It's still something like 2/3 larger than the current model PS2; they haven't hit some theoretical limit yet if they care to go for it.

I think the PSOne is still the smallest disc based console out right now.

Ps3 still outsellig the Wii?
I'm sure the Wii will outsell the Ps3 next week!
And if not next week, next next week for sure!

Why is everyone stressing out about S&P2? They showed it during E3, me thinks everyone should calm down.
Well, we've been burned by things like Diaster and ASH before.

EDIT: Since MechaX mentioned it, it might've been Soma Bringer I was thinking of rather than ASH. Anyway, one of them was shown in English.

I'm definitely happy for the Platinum Games and the Bayonetta sales. They have a talented staff. I hope this gets them some bigger budgets from Sega.

Can't get much smaller. Minimum width and depth are dictated by the 5.25" disc format, and height is pretty low already. They'd basically have to remove the Gamecube controller ports to reduce height any further, but there's really no need. It's tiny as it is.

Well, they can make a bigger version for old people.

Did Soma Bringer or Fatal Frame 4 ever have any E3/NA exposure? Just curious.

Nope. I think the only game that had a push at a Western event but then subsequently didn't make it out in the US was Disaster, although I'm sure there may be one or two others.

PS3 drop not only has a profoundly larger first effect than the Wii price drop, but it also has better legs.

Nintendo getting out-legged is rare. I still think "hysterical panic" is an appropriate response to the Wii's predicament in Japan, by the way!

This just feeds back into the the point that Nintendo didn't need to drop the price. They needed more games to appeal to more audiences. At least Iwata seems to understand this. PS3 was selling like crap for so long whereas Nintendo was dealing with a saturated market. Naturally Sony will have an easier time getting sales.

NSMB Wii will hopefully be that software kick in the ass Wii needs.

It was built originally for the classic controller. I would rather see Treasure enjoying success than suffering in a third party hell for the sake of a slightly different play experience.
So Treasure would be "enjoying success" if S&P2, an incredibly niche game (for reasons already listed) came out on the 360 in Japan(an incredibly niche console in the region)?

It's not that mindblowing. Quite a few "incredibly niche" games have enjoyed (relative!) success on 360 in Japan (eg. Shmups and ADVs).

I'd actually argue that the only games where it can make some sense to develop exclusively for 360 in the Japanese market are "incredibly niche" ones.

Who'd be footing the bill for this 360 game, though? I imagine S&P2's bill is footed by Nintendo. Treasure gets paid even when the game sells 5k first day, I imagine.

Does anyone have numbers for Shikigami(360) or Raiden (360) or any other game he might be hinting at?

No, it hasn't. How do you define better legs?

Sure.

garaph.info
-> Game Search
-> TitleEnglish
-> Type %Game name% (%Shikigami% or %Raiden%)

Shikigami no Shiro III
Raiden Fighters Aces

Raiden IV did not chart.

Note that any 2009 games are going to be missing year-end figures so a lot of hidden off-chart growth is not going to be present.

I think he's defining it by the absolute numbers and its positioning (i.e. we're 8 weeks in now and it still posts higher numbers than the home competition, whereas Wii's cut was more recent but only bumped it into that position for a week or so at most, and is already falling back to the mid twenties, a point the PS3 hasn't reached yet). In absolute terms the Wii didn't get nearly as big a bump, and is hitting lower faster. I guess you're defining it by the relative drop off after the first week or whatever? Wii's relative drop off after the first week hasn't been as steep of course, but it's increase wasn't nearly as sharp in the first place either so that's not so difficult..

Wasn't that just of that debut snippet of footage, art, and logo from E3 2006, and then nada?

A little fun fact;

Shows that

Code:
PS3	PS2		PSP		GCN
150	54		80,2		170,8
151	55,1		82,1		172,1
152	55,7		83,3		172,8
153	56,3		84		173,6
154	56,8	2,80	84,7	4,50	176,5	5,70

Its steadily loosing to PS2, and gaining a bit on PSP/GCN.

You won't be able to say this for long, if PS3 continues at this clip, since PS3's numbers are now into GCN's 2005 numbers.

2005 was when GCN sales really fell off the face of the earth. GCN only sold approx. 273K in 2005, with weekly numbers in the first half of the year around 3,200/wk generally. PS3 should start picking up sales on the GCN's historical number around 8-9 "GCN weeks" at a time per "PS3 week" now.

As long as PS3 numbers stay reasonably steady, and get the expected holiday/FFXIII bump, the "PS3=GCN LOL" meme will be very dead rather soon.

Some of the MC comments:

- DQIX crossed 4 million. It took 16 weeks. The previous record was NSMB with 34 weeks. (Remember MC does not combine multiple versions like the Pokémon games; or at least it didn't use to...)
If we combine Diamond / Pearl sales after 88 days (13 weeks) it was:

1. [DS] Pokemon Diamond (Pokemon Co.) - 209.379 / 2.329.227
3. [DS] Pokemon Pearl (Pokemon Co.) - 164.670 / 1.931.445
_. [DS] Pokemon Diamond / Pearl (Pokemon Co.) - 374.049 / 4.260.672

Pokemon Diamond / Pearl is the fastest game to 4 million.

Sin & Punishment 2 was always being made due to the strong sales of the original on Virtual Console in the U.S. This is a case where the Japanese sales are not going to determine if it gets brought to the U.S. or not.

I'm taking what the sales were for the first week of the price cut, and then comparing them to what they are now.

Now, again, the PS3 price cut has been way more impressive in establishing at least a temporary higher baseline, but strictly speaking, its not showing better legs.
