Next up, Ninja Musou!

didn't they put Ryu Hayabusa and Ayane in their latest Musou game ? and NO , they need to make Monster Farm Musou first ( and Zero Musou will be HOT )

but I think they now need to try DOA on more than just Xbox in Japan again ( latest multiplat DOA was DOA2 on Dreamcast and PS2).

First week predictions

[NDS] Mega Man Battle Network: Operate Shooting Star – 50.000
[PSP] J-League Pro Soccer Club! 6: Pride of J – 90.000
[WII] Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers – 40.000
[PS3] Dragon Ball: Raging Blast – 60.000

Anyone knows what’s the deal with Blood: The Last Vampire from SCE (21/12/00)?
Nifty has it at:

Individual weeks
18/12/00-24/12/00: 34.995 / NEW (issue 523-1) – exists also at famitsu.com/game/rank
25/12/00-31/12/00: 11.211 / 46.206 (issue 523-1) – exists also at famitsu.com/game/rank

Combined weeks
18/12/00-31/12/00: 24.753 (issue 523)

2000 top 300 from geimin cut is at 33.530 but the title isn’t in the top 300 so I guess the individual weekly numbers are wrong? It’s the only week with both combined and individual weekly sales with this error.

Also a number of games from 1996-2001 top 100 provided by nifty differ from 1996-2001 top 100 provided by geimin by a few units (but the rank remains the same from what I have seen)

Nifty gives the 2002 top 500 (geimin only 2002 top 300) but the cut for the top 500 last game is 3230 units, number very low. There are big differences between the two lists not only by units but also by ranks.

Is there anyone who has found what is the reason for these differences between the two sites? I’ve always believed and still believe that geimin is one of the more reliable sites there are.

At least this one I think I can speak to. Geimin's using the actual Famitsu Top 300 list. Nifty is combining data from a variety of Famitsu-based sources to create a bigger list using the best known data at the time. Above the list it specifically mentions the Top 30s, the half year lists, Famitsu PS2, Famitsu Cube & Advance, Famitsu Xbox as data sources. The page refers to it as "<Ver. １．０>", probably so future changes to the list wouldn't go unnoticed. Probably the lower ones on the list are single weeks of sales for those games.

The 2002 "Top 500" is a combination of monthly individual format Top sellers, Top 30s, and various other data sources he had access to. It is not a complete Top 500 listing. I believe it's all good data and from Famitsu, but there's going to be some discrepencies if you take it at face value that it's from the end of 2002.

Edit:
As JoshuaJSlone said. :)

Nifty combined DC Sonic and Sonic (BEST) in the 1999 Top 100, IIRC. Once I figured that out, I just relied on GEIMIN/YSO for the Top 100s. Nifty has some data that GEIMIN doesn't, though (like the 2002 "Top 500"), but it helps to crosscheck it as much as possible.

I wouldn't get down on Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games (or whatever its actual name is) yet - the holiday shopping season is just starting, and the Olympics themselves don't start until mid-Feb. I expect it will continue to sell low-ish amounts through the end of the year and through the end of the Olympics, too.

That said, I'm not expecting it to pull in numbers comparable to the first, though I do think it'll pull in decent-enough numbers (300k-ish) by the time all is said and done...

Famitsu Software Stuff

Rune Factory 3 opens slightly better than the original (277), but not as well as the second (2764).

PS3 FIFA 10 starts off pretty nicely. We have to go back to 2004 PS2 game FIFA Total Football 2 to find another FIFA that started as well.
PS3+FIFA+10

PSP Dynasty Warriors 6 is one of the weaker Musou/Warriors starts on the system. I suppose it is too little too late, considering DW6 was originally released November 2007 and was released on PS2 October 2008.
DW6+S

Monster Hunter 3 (3647) is hanging in there. This is the third week in a row its sales have been in the 4800-5000 range.

Created a new group, Capcom PS2/GCN to Wii ports. Didn't include Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes, but it's a borderline case being half year-late port and half multiplatform release. Okami (3737) seems to be performing about like RE0 (3020) and RE (3578) early on. Interesting note: with the numbers I've got right now, Capcom PS2/GCN to Wii ports look to account for about 7% of third party Wii sales.

What's with the low FF:CC numbers across the board? Did Square Enix forget they made this game and didn't ship it to retailers or something? Help me out here, I must understand.

Low hype + low advertisement = low sales
I wouldn't say this about a game that released one or two gameplay videos every week since last March, coverage on famitsu and jump almost every week and playable demos on E3, Gamescom and TGS

it also got some adv in Japan, 4 spots in TV and some big poster around the streets

maybe it's because of the low score on famitsu, buh :/

Yup - it has had a reasonable amount of promotion. If anything's going to sink it at this stage, it's going to be that it's quite a departure in gameplay terms from previous games in the series and is therefore something of an unknown quantity, and that the most recent games may have done something to "dilute" the strength of the FFCC brand.

I think it has the potential to do well - say, 200k plus LTD - with some luck, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it craters and does far, far less.

There we have it. A full week of sales. Proof that when Sony fixes one console, they make sure to screw up another.
I think the PS3 has a higher priority though. Sony is probably pleased with the overall picture. The gap between the PS3 and Wii widens again, and a variety of games are selling well on the PS3. Nice.

Nice for PS3- was expecting a nice little bump from WE. Thought Wii might hold a bit better since it actually went up last week. Should be interesting for sure- with Crystal Bearers impending bomb there really isn't much for Wii (outside of Taiko 2) until NSMB Wii on 12/3.

Nintendo really needs to come out guns blazing next year. They can't rely on one or two heavy hitters at the end of the year.

Not to suggest that the PS3's success hasn't taken me by surprise, but "a variety of games are selling well on the PS3"? Hasn't PES always sold well on the PS3, so is Bayonetta really our metric here?

Iwata's comments seem to suggest that they're not going to do that again.

Yes. Which is why I think Galaxy will be here relatively soon. Aside from that, not much has been announced either first or third party for next year. No Octoberton has made 2010 a pretty big mystery.

Well sure, depends on the context and our selective memory. If you keep comparing the PS3 to the PS2 for example, you'll always end up saying the PS3 is in the gutter. If you however compare the PS3 today with exactly one year ago, it's kicking ass.

Just going by the general picture the past few weeks: PS3 has healthy steady sales, and there are probably more PS3 titles in the top 10 this month alone compared to the period January-PS3slim launch as a whole(might be exaggerating ;)). Sure, PES always sells well, but the mere fact that every week there is a title with potentially good sales on the PS3, while there's virtually nothing on the Wii, is good on it's own, irregardless the popularity of franchises in general.

Knowing from where the PS3 comes, it's not hard to impress in a good way. The only way was up (or the graveyard). But it is going up. And in a relatively short period, so yeah, I'm impressed.

You can't just take a 3-4 week sample for that, though. After next week PS3 won't have much of anything until December 17th while Wii will have some big hitters- if we sample that period of 3-4 weeks your conclusions might change. Best to just sit back and see how things play out the rest of this year and, more importantly, into January and February of next year when we should get a better indication of where things stand for both consoles.

3 more weeks of this and PS3 will be where it needs to be in order for FFXIII to follow the same 3-month model as FFX, that being 2 mill in 3 months.

I'll gladly eat my own hat when it turns out the PS3 only had a little bump, but just going by the current situation, I think PS3 will stay very competitive against the Wii from here on out. Sony seems to have some good cards in their hands. FFXIII might be the last push the PS3 needs to make it the leading console (in weekly sales at least, not LTD) for the coming year. It's also partly thanks to the complete incompetence from Nintendo the past year to keep momentum. I hope Iwata is a smart enough exec to see drastic changes are in order.

I was talking more software releases I guess. I think PS3 hardware sales have been incredibly impressive, no question, but I haven't seen much to think "wow, what an amazing software situation".

And that is certainly possible. If NSMB Wii isn't a system mover then I think Dragona's chart might be very apt. Nintendo is clearly banking a lot on it and like I said in a previous post I don't see much in 2010 yet.

Also, GT5 moving to March might be good for Sony in the long run. Releasing it in Dec. might very well have given PS3 the 2009 YTD crown, but IMO having such a strong release in early 2010 could lead to a better overall situation.

To be fair outside of the few Square-Enix/Nintendo releases and the occasional Gundam game, software sales in Japan are in the gutter. I'm sure Kamiya and crew lit some fireworks when Bayonetta performed as well as it did.

Looks like Japan has voted "no" on PSP Go, and are continuing to give the finger to the Wii, while the reasonably priced PS3 Slim sells like a console ought to. Japanese customers are making all the right moves with hardware support IMO.

Wii Sports: ~4K yen
$200 U.S. dollars ~= 18K yen

Wii without Wii Sports should then be ~14K yen. Wii is actually at 20K yen (~$220). Wii is most expensive, without a pack-in, in the territory where it's selling the worst. Any idea why?

schuelma said:

Dragona's statement refers to the Wii's chances of performing up to PS2 levels in Japan. That conclusion is not based on NSMB, but it is very different than how most peoples are interpreting the statement.
