That's a really poor second week for Strange Journey, and it's even tracking behind Etrian Odyssey 2 now. Wow, what the fuck's going on there? :/

It seems pretty obvious that for whatever reason (retailers? Atlus? production constrains?) the game never got a second shipment based on those numbers. It would not make sense otherwise. But what's done is done, once something like this happens, the legs are pretty much terminated for niche titles like this. It's really...... sad. I guess SJ can join Infinite Space in the "should've shipped more initially" corner of 2009.

Will MH3's legs be the 5K mark? We'll have to wait till next week to find out, but it's hanging on quite nicely. Few console games last more than two months in the Top 30 these days.

DQIX still doesn't break 4 Million this week.

Extrapolating from last week's figures, I guess U2 did around 55k for the week. Not bad, all things considered.

Yeah, not bad at all. How much did Drake's Fortune sell?

kpop100 said:
Not bad out of an initial shipment of about 67,000 if you go by first day numbers.

Yeah, I didn't want to reply to his post but that's 80% of the shipment. Pretty good.

I was hoping for something like that too.
Why not hope for more than 25k first day sales for Uncharted 2? :) Or did you mean expected instead of hoping?

(I am sorry for the very late reply to this quote by the way, i didnt get around to answer before now :\).

Wii 27000
PS3 27000
Good staying power so far, especially for the PS3 (which got the price drop (and the PS3 Slim) earlier than the Wii price drop). I wonder how close the Wii and the PS3 sales will contunie to follow eachother in the upcoming weeks.

By the way, when is Super Mario Galaxy 2 coming out? Has a release date or a release time period been announced?

EDIT:

Drake's Fortune has a re-release as well, which has sold 22,000. If you count this release as well, then Drake's Fortune has sold about 60k, which is relatively close to what Uncharted 2 sold in it's first week :)

The week of the 29th seems to be a big one for Sony. They could get ahead again in the short term but I don't think there's going to be a major change until NSMB Wii and FFXIII.

I guess I could see Tekken 6/Bayonetta giving it a tiny bump that gives PS3 enough to pass Wii for the week, but its not like those are going to be *massive* or anything. I'd say WE 2010 will move more hardware the following week.

Bayonetta is a wildcard being a new series. The debut won't be massive but what happens afterward might make a difference. Also Sonic and Mario hits the week after so Wii should see some sales that week too.

Next week is gonna be boring though, no (notable) releases for any console/handheld.

We get to watch how Strange Journey continues to bomb, while waiting for 4WoL to bomb the week after that! Fun!!!!!!!! :D

What is 4WoL?

edit: nvm, it's ff4 gaiden

I considered Level 5's 800k expectations for Inazuma 2 pretty damn crazy, but it turns out to be a quite reasonable LTD for the game. That would be L5's second new IP that sells in this magnitude. Impressive.

And I hate everyone that is involved in SJ's poor second week performance. Wonder how this could happen after its very promising opening.

And I still don't know what is going on with Love Plus. It has now surpassed every Tokimeki game in garaph's database.

It will probably sell more than Tokimeki 4 will in Dec too.

Is pokemon selling fast enough to pass DQIX before the end of the year?

Surprised Ps3 isn't falling faster considering the dearth of releases since ToV. Don't know if Tekken will do much to raise sales maybe just maintain(any bundles for it?)

Wii vs. PS3 2009 is looking more and more like DS vs. PSP 2008.

Yeah it should be fun. Looking at PS3, they have a good few weeks coming up (10/29, 11/5), then pretty quiet until 12/17 with FF13. Wii has a string of solid releases starting next week but nothing really impactful until NSMB Wii on 12/3.

But I don't see a similar outcome for Nintendo in this battle.

But then again, the PSP outsold the DS by way more than the PS3 has managed to do thus far, and the PS3 hasn't been ahead in terms of YTD even after the Slim launch. The only exception may have been the beginning of the year.

If GT Portable and Undead Knights both beat out Strange Journey, it could be a pretty awful second week for it. Oh well. I guess we'll just have to live with another 10 ports/remakes/expansions of the Persona series....

Edit: Wow, under 18k. Failure.

Is not strange. That kind of game, Shin Megami, Disgaea, etc, are games that makes nearly all sells in the first week. Their target is very specific, and usually buys the game in day1.

PS3 HW is holding steady with Wii HW with no new big releases for either. Hmm.

And after the incredibly weak start for the price drop, Wii has had a pretty good hold.

Erm, no. I don't think you know what you're talking about here. :p

Dropping from 91k to 18k is a HUGE drop off, and not something that is usual at all.

Well, sort of. This is a sharper drop than the last DS SMT (yes, spinoff, of course) or the last mainline SMT. Also, since this dropoff pretty much entirely coincides with original shipping numbers, it's probably a "no second shipment situation".

SMT3:
150k
40k (-75%)
15k
7k

Devil Survivor:
56k
16k (-70%)
6k

SMT4:
91k
16k (-80%)

It is pretty big, but then so are these others from Atlus in the last year-ish

Persona 4
Week 1: 211,967
Week 2: 35,301 (17%)

Persona PSP
Week 1: 95,406
Week 2: 13,819 (14%)

Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon
Week 1: 76,576
Week 2: 16,985 (22%)

Let's look at some Raidou numbers:

Raidou first week - 56,215
Raidou second week - 13,027

Raidou 2 first week - 76,576
Raidou 2 second week - 16,985

And let's compare it to EO2 and 7th Dragon, both similar "niche" titles:

EO2 first week - 85,555
EO2 second week - 22,636

7D first week - 81,536
7D second week - 20,220

In light of all these other results, it's obvious why Strange Journey marketed as the next mainline entry in the SMT series, is having a terrible second week.

JoshuaJSlone said:

Well I would think that SMT:SJ performing on par with Persona PSP, and under par with Raidou 2, is not a good sign at all!

The stock is definitely drying up, at least in my town. Why there's no second shipment is beyond me, but whatever, I expect to see a fair amount in the used shops as of this weekend, so good jon Atlus.

Well, hasn't it already outsold both Raidou 1 and Devil Survivor? That's not horrible for the third game using the EO engine, 20th using the basic fusion system, and the first of six games that are going to use the exact same animated demon sprites and portraits. Who knows, there might even be a FESIACS edition!

I think what he was going for is that selling 47k day one and then an average of 2.67k the three following days suggests a very frontloaded title. It's still a good number looking at the shipment and the sales of the original, but not as good as the first day number suggested.

IE2's 3rd week is really surprising, especially after the "regular" 2nd week drop (74%). When I saw the numbers I thought that there might be a mistake, going from 76k to 73k is pretty much not dropping. Wonder what will happen next week: 297k -> 76k -> 73k -> ?.

U2 situation is similar to SMTSJ last week: big first day, terrible next three days, about 82% sell-through first week.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Inazuma Eleven 2's 3rd week just confirms what we already know, that Level 5 is the most competent publisher on the market's lead platform right now.

Weell, they're certainly up there. But to put some perspective on things, it would take IE2 performing pretty amazingly for the entirety of Level Five's output to match Dragon Quest IX before the release of Layton 4.

It was pretty obvious given the legs after the first day that Strange Journey would be a pretty poor performer overall.

Well DQ is DQ, it's drawing from a long legacy. In the last few years Level5 have pretty much outclassed every other third party when it comes to successfully launching new IPs. Layton was the first, now IE's the second and Ninokuni could well be their third. At this point SE seem to have lost the ability to sell anything that they haven't slapped the FF or DQ name.

To put things further into perspective, the entirety of Level 5's output was released after DQIX was announced! :lol

DQIX is on a completely different scale, though, and it does not take very much cleverness on SE's side to make a mainline DQ sell 3 million+ units on the market leader system
Level 5 on the other hand is really showing some amazing sensitivity when it comes to handling their games and judging the Japanese market. They established two very popular new IP's in the past years and that is something SE does not seem to be capable of right now. Their own efforts on games, that are not based on existing franchises, were not even remotely as ambitious and/or successful as Level 5's.

2 or 3 weeks until HG/SS matches FR/LG.

After 6 weeks:

[DS] Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver (Pokemon Co.) - 151.242 / 2.671.528
[DS] Pokemon Diamond / Pearl (Pokemon Co.) - 183.048 / 2.935.294

Are we looking to another 5 million seller? Right now 4 million are possible just for this year.

After 3 weeks:

[WII] Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo) - 112.358 / 571.262
[WII] Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo) - 92.894 / 599.915
[WII] Wii Fit (Nintendo) - 119.841 / 527.069

But don't worry, Wii Fit Plus bombed.

Strange Journey maybe didn't have a second shipment. Media Create reported sell outs at some stores last week and the price of the game was and is very high at amazon. Not that I expect big numbers if that's the case and Atlus restocks soon. The situation reminds me of Infinite Space.

Upset that there's no second shipment of SJ.

Chris: Back when EO1 was released on a tiny shipment, in a week copies were going for the equivalent of 250$USD. Not surprised that SJ is going up in price on Amazon.
