This is being requoted because it's so fucking true.

I intend to buy three PSP games for my PSP Go. Two of them are games I sold as UMD in preparation for the Go, and the other is Biohazard Portable, for obvious reasons.

If I ever wanna buy another PSP game, I sure as hell will get the UMD and make sure I love it before selling it off in favor of DD.

CVX, don't you miss the "taking pictures of my humongous RE collection so that people are amazed at my freakiness" by going the DD route, instead of UMD route ?

The freakiness are taken from the freak part of your NeoGAF id

Impressive numbers for Strange Journey, and even more so when you consider it's the third game with that dungeon engine, fourth with the battle interface, and Atlus is going to be using those 300+ animated demons for probably four or five more DS games over the coming years.

This is kinda off topic, but can anyone explain to me how InFamous got a Z rating in Japan? I thought the game was pretty mild in terms of violence, I think it was rated the T equivalent in most Western countries.

Cell phone games do alright but they don't require an internet connection, are not available in physical format, and are often broken up into bite-sized low-priced chunks and/or subscription services.

Right, and GTP doesn't fit into any of those (and from recent pricing, neither do PSP minis). My point is that there's already a model for DD that seems to work. Level-5 seems to be betting on DD as well, no, with Roid? And are wi-fi hotspots prevalent at all, or is all portable internet access done via cell phones?

Here is the big battle for the top selling game of 2009. If Dragon Quest IX doesn't have a good holiday season it will be outsold from Pokemon.

Yikes. PS3 sales are already more than fucked again.

No game out that can really move the units, there needs to be one compelling title every month to sustain sales, FFXIII is probably going to do that for December, the PS3 Japanese line-up is still paper-thin.

I find this fascinating and, perhaps, reasonable. I'd have to think about it. It is effectively a deeper judgement than what we have in the states. Here, it's very simple: blood is bad.

By the metric you're describing, blood certainly doesn't help, but it's not necessarily damning, either. The primary concern is whether that blood is shed killing a dozen Nazis or a dozen Ghandis.

Really interesting.

Roid is pretty much just a cell phone "platform". Those are a dime a dozen here, so there must be some money in them.

As for WiFi hotspots, they have them in some manga cafes and of course McDonald's.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't think DD can succeed in a big way, I just think that, at least for the Japanese market, Sony's coming about it all the wrong ways with PSP.

Everybody seems to forget that it's available on the PSN.

EDIT: Any hardware numbers from Famitsu or Dengeki yet?
The PSP Go doesn't come out until November 1st there. That really shouldn't be an issue at least to the tune of equal sales as someone has suggested. I assume there is some sort of region lock on the store, right? Either way, it's a pretty colossal bomb given the development time and it being such a storied franchise.

I thought this is somehow note worthy. Return of the good old Koei predictions.
http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/10/15/hokuto_musou_stock_jump/
Separately, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun has a report in which Tecmo Koei CEO Kenji Matsubara says that he expects the game to sell a million copies in Japan alone.
He's talking about Hokuto Musou.

Its not Gundam Musou claim (1m for musou + 1m for gundam = 2m!), but still close. Its not the same person though, this time its Kenji Matsubara (which was from Koei side of course) while the Gundam Musou one was Koei co-founder Keiko Erikawa (but usually wrongly regarded as a Namco Bandai claim).

Could have been way more funny if he said 2m, after all one Fist of the North Star pachinko game actually sold over 1m (just a hair below by famitsu, 962k, sammy claimed 1m). I don't think there's any Gundam that has ever done that (highest I've seen seems to be Federation VS Zaft DX on PS2 at 808k).

Mind you, that's just one of the considerations. There are other stuff as well, like how you're not allowed to show mutilations of body parts (especially the head) on human enemies. Even in Z rated games, many games are censored to tone down or completely remove extreme mutilations like those found in RE4 and Dead Rising.

Another interesting comparison is something like Lost Planet. It is rated CERO C in Japan, but gets a M in the US. The reason it gets a M in the US is because it is a game where you carry firearms and you get to shoot at human enemies. In Japan, as long as it is not too bloody or realistic, something like that will not net you a D rating.

Anything which is overly bloody or violent will net you a D rating. So in that sense it is not really all that different from how ESRB determines their M. You can't really compare a Z with a M, because a Z is pretty much an AO in the US.

Most publishers will not want to release a CERO Z game in Japan unless they already determined that it is not a core market for the game. You will notice that for RE5, even in the US, there are no longer any visible decapitations or gruesome death scenes. It is the same version internationally, so it could be released in Japan with a D rating.

He's talking about Hokuto Musou.

Keep these producer predictions in your pocket:

Hokuto Musou = 1 million in Japan (KOEI)
God Eater = 500k in Japan (Namco Bandai)

It's going to be hilarious when both fail to meet the targets! :)

If a name is funny, the answer is usually that I Babelfished it and didn't know what it should be corrected to off-hand.

I saw a lot of GTP in the used shops last weekend. To me, that points to a title whose sales are declining because of consumer disappointment as opposed to people clamouring to buy it online.

The used business in Japan is another compelling reason to think DD sales won't be very strong, as well. Because there aren't any rentals allowed in Japan, games turn over really, really fucking fast here, and you will sometimes get almost what you paid for the game even a week after it comes out.

So if I'm a game buyer in Japan (oh hey, I am!), do I want to roll the dice and pay near full price for a DD version I can do nothing with if I don't like it/am finished with it, or do I want to buy a physical copy I can turn around next week for full price less 1000 yen? This is one of those really easy decisions that pretty much all but the most stupid make the right choice on.

Very GREAT analysis, man. No words to add...

I'm surprised Okami didn't do one of those sub-5k first days most Wii games do.

Biohazard 4: Wii Edition -> Biohazard 0 -> Biohazard -> Monster Hunter G -> Okami

Clearly there's a trend here.

Uncharted performing exactly as I had imagined, maybe a bit better.

Uncharted will do a 60k first week with 100 lifetime.

:D

If it sells out, it'll do about 67k this week, but I don't think it will sell out.

Uncharted is sold out in a lot of places, actually. They really undershipped.
It's possible the first one didn't take off as much as it could have, due to the low install base and the timing, but Japan's gaming audience is well aware of how huge Uncharted 2 is in the West (I mean critically).

Okay, I better snatch up a copy soon then. Or settle for super-cheap Uncharted 1.

30./42. [PS3] Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (BEST) (SCEI)

Uncharted 1 has been one of the best-selling game in the BEST series since the PS3 launch. Which of course means that there's some pent-up interest in the sequel. How much pent-up interest though? Will it reach 200,000?

I find this fascinating and, perhaps, reasonable. I'd have to think about it. It is effectively a deeper judgement than what we have in the states. Here, it's very simple: blood is bad.

By the metric you're describing, blood certainly doesn't help, but it's not necessarily damning, either. The primary concern is whether that blood is shed killing a dozen Nazis or a dozen Ghandis.

Really interesting.

Seems stupid to me, that's probably only because of the polar opposite situations I've seen like a brochure I saw in a local video store that had a picture taken from a scene in Ichi the Killer, suffice to say that it made me sick just to look at it. The brochure was sitting around free for any kid to pick up. Or the time I was in the local rental store and they had something like Battle Royale 2 playing on the TV, a little kid was standing watching it. The scene I noticed in passing was some kid getting shot through the forehead.

I honestly find it hard at times to figure out how on one hand the Japanese can be so strict (Crackdown being Z) while so lenient at other times.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Wow, really impressive for Uncharted 2.

And pretty decent for the Okami port as well.

Looks like Steins;Gate has a similar opening to Chaos;Head Noah, slightly higher I guess. Should be around 20k for the week, I'm considering picking up a copy since the artwork is really beautiful in this game. 5pb really knows how to sell visual novels for the 360 here, seems like Prototype is getting discouraged after Time Leap was a complete dud.

Also, on that wifi issue people were talking about before. There are very few free wifi spots, it's actually a thing that a lot of foreigners apparently are surprised at (I know someone who works at a Starbucks, and they say that foreign customers often ask if they have wifi). Even places like McDonalds you have to be a Yahoobb subscriber to use, or pay some fee. The DS thing gets around it by actually having a program you get through download play at the store, but you can't use McDonalds to access the DSi shop or anything like that. It's a pain at times!
