30./42. [PS3] Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (BEST) (SCEI)

Uncharted 1 has been one of the best-selling game in the BEST series since the PS3 launch. Which of course means that there's some pent-up interest in the sequel. How much pent-up interest though? Will it reach 200,000?
How much has the first Uncharted sold, original and BEST releases combined?

distantmantra said:
The relatively low price (4,900 to 5,180 yen) of Uncharted 2 probably helped, too.
Well, it should be noted that finally SCE games are back to their 5980Y price. Uncharted 1 was the same price as this one.
They tried to milk 6980Y with Resistance 2, WKC, Demons Soul and Killzone 2 but they are back to 5980Y for Uncharted 2 and Infamous.

From sinobi, funny first day comparison:
2007-12:PS3「Uncharted 1」- 7,300
2009-10:PS3「Uncharted 2」- 46,000

Okami Wii is pretty cheap too, 3990Y. Seems Capcom took their RE Archives route rather than some other ports route which went for full price (~7000Y). Seems to have worked well too. First day comparison:
2006-04:PS2「Okami」- 48,000
2009-04:Wii「Oboro Muramasa」- 16,000
2009-10:Wii「Okami」- 19,000
(Yeah, its sinobi who used Muramasa)

About the 360 ADV, comparison with Chaos Head Noah from the same developer, first day, showing a little improvement:
2009-02:Xbox360「CHAOS;HEAD NOAH LE」- 6,500
2009-02:Xbox360「CHAOS;HEAD NOAH NE」- 3,700
2009-10:Xbox360「Steins;Gate LE」- 7,000
2009-10:Xbox360「Steins;Gate NE」- 3,800

One more, FMA game on PSP doesn't seem to do much better than the Wii one released not long ago:
[WII] Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Akatsuki no Ouji (Square Enix) - 6,600 (23%)
[PSP] Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Senaka wo Takuseshi Mono (Bandai Namco Games) - 10,000 (43%)
For the Bandai side specifically though, its only doing better than the last one in 2005.

So over the past day I've worked on a parser that's mostly to aid me in getting the weekly Famitsu software stuff entered into Garaph more quickly, but I might as well share it. Who knows what you all might do with it or request be done with it.

First there's http://garaph.info/labs/famsoftparse.php It will grab the latest Top 30 from Famitsu.com and basically splits up everything into a column of its own, splitting up things that shared a cell (like Title and Publisher), and ditching images for the ranks and running men while keeping their contents. You can also specify an older Top 30 URL (well, until you get back to a different format) by appending ?sourceurl= and the URL.

Then there's an extension that's more specific to my purposes, which I've put at http://garaph.info/labs/famsoftparseme.php so if this stuff is of no matter you don't need to ask the system to do the extra work. In addition to the basic table, it then lists the week's new software in a format very close to my own game spreadsheet for easy copy-pasting. It then lists the weekly data in a format that's close to what I'll enter in with SQL, but the big nice is that it will try to determine the Game ID based on the rank from the previous week (or the one before that).

Gooooooo Okami !

I expected ~20000 for the first day and here it is (well, a little bit lower I know).

Based on the latest Famitsu hardware numbers...
PSP comparisons: After 252 weeks, PSP is where PS2 was at 197.5 weeks (December 10, 2003), where DS was at 105.0 weeks (December 3, 2006), and where GBA was at 172.1 weeks (Juuly 5, 2004).

X360 comparisons: After 200 weeks, X360 is where GCN was at 20.0 weeks (January 27, 2002), where PS3 was at 41.8 weeks (August 25, 2007), and where Wii was at 6.1 weeks (January 7, 2007).

PS3 comparisons: After 152 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 55.7 weeks (March 23, 2001), where PSP was at 83.3 weeks (July 11, 2006), where GCN was at 172.8 weeks (December 27, 2004), and where Wii was at 46.3 weeks (October 16, 2007).

Wii comparisons: After 149 weeks, Wii is where GBA was at 103.5 weeks (March 13, 2003), where DS was at 79.4 weeks (June 7, 2006), where PS2 was at 124.5 weeks (July 17, 2002), and where PSP was at 173.1 weeks (March 30, 2008).

DSi comparisons: After 49 weeks, DSi is where GBASP was at 69.2 weeks (June 7, 2004) and where DSL was at 23.7 weeks (August 11, 2006).

Based on last week's Media Create hardware numbers...
DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 58.1 / 41.9 bring total shares to 68.4 / 31.6. If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 375.9 weeks (December 25, 2016--Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal).

X360 vs PS3: Weekly shares of 9.7 / 90.3 bring total shares to 23.9 / 76.1. If PS3 stopped selling and X360 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 751.9 weeks (March 10, 2024).

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares of 50.1 / 49.9 bring total shares to 29.8 / 70.2. At this week's rates, PS3 would catch up to Wii in 31,790.0 weeks (January 18, 2619). If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 159.5 weeks (November 1, 2012).

Week over week, down, down, down, down, down, and down.
X360

Through the first forty weeks of the year, overall sales are down. However, the systems can be split into camps of 3 up and 3 down. Here's how the year-to-date year-over-year percents stand as of now.

Wii: -51.3%
DSL+DSi: +17.1%
PS2: -54.5%
PS3: +46.6%
PSP: -43.3%
X360: +51.9%

Home hardware: -26.5%
Portable hardware: -15.4%
Sum of all hardware: -19.8%

Last year:
0.1

This year:

Famitsu Software Stuff

Wii Fit Plus (3719) has a bigger first week than Wii Fit (2674) did in 2007, but it was also available for twice as many days.
100

After four weeks, Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver (3698) are about where FireRed and LeafGreen (1558) were after 10 months.
300

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (3723) starts off almost exactly like Ninja Gaiden (2656) and Ninja Gaiden Sigma (22). Their lines are all overlapping at the ~40K point for their first weeks.
300

The Monster Hunter 3 vs Dynasty Warriors 5 comparison doesn't add much interesting this week, but since this might just be its last week in the Top 30 I don't want to skip it. MH3 is just a few thousand shy of DW5's last known total, though.

This week was historic for PS2 (besides that it had new low again). It's the first time with no game in the m-create top 50. There have been though many times with one on two games. The upcoming games it has for this year are very few and most of them are budget re-releases. The price cuts of Wii and PS3 and the anemic release list are killing it. If the drop continues so fast, 2010 will be the last year it will be tracked from Media Create.

Going by Famitsu, the last known LTD for the original is 55k and the BEST is at 18k. So 73k LTD combined.

Very good start for Uncharted 2. And the under-shipment reeks of Demon's Soul. Wonder if Sony will be able to put out a second one fast to avoid the used market eating U2's sales, though.

Interesting analysis, but why did you add that line for PS3/Wii when you don't make that comparison for any other hardware?

It's the only one with a legitimate catchup date this week, since it's ahead for the week but behind in total. The others are calculated, but we get stuff like "At this week's rates, PSP would catch up to DS in -972.6 weeks (February 21, 1991)."

Well, there's been no inkling of Onimusha. RE, Okami, Monster Hunter, and Sengoku Basara are already happening. DMC is elsewhere. GTA isn't really theirs. Guess that makes Street Fighter EX 3 or Breath of Fire V next?

I think Onimusha is more likely than Breath of Fire, as much as I'd love more BoF. Street Fighter ports are more likely than both though, I don't see them making new fighters for Wii anymore unless TvC does well here.

So if I'm a game buyer in Japan (oh hey, I am!), do I want to roll the dice and pay near full price for a DD version I can do nothing with if I don't like it/am finished with it, or do I want to buy a physical copy I can turn around next week for full price less 1000 yen? This is one of those really easy decisions that pretty much all but the most stupid make the right choice on.
This is exactly what I replied to someone who was arguing about first sales of GTP since we couldn't know the DD numbers. Glad someone else shares my PoV on used market opposed to DD sales =) That's the main reason why I think DD will never take flight in Japan :D

You missing the obvious. They're going to port Godhand to the Wii, complete with motion controls for all the gag moves and spanking!

I'm surprised by Uncharted 2 as well. I did expect it to do a lot better first week than the original, maybe up to around 35k in one week. But not 47k first day.

Don't expect much more of this in the whole week, maybe 60k. Western devs games, in Japan, are bought only for a very hardcore people that buy it in the first day.

But is impressive for a western dev, in the line of titles like ODST or Gears.

Great for Uncharted, and also awesome to see more Okami, as always. I'm really curious to see if they'll try a bigger budget Okami console game if Okamiden does well(although the DS really does seem like the perfect platform for that franchise).

Yeah, even a bit higher. Halo 3 is the biggest Halo or Gears start at just over 60K. It's less obvious to me what to immediately compare it to on PS3.

EDIT: To clarify, that 60+K is a first week number.

Do you have a link for 55k and 18k (BEST)? Garaph and japan-gamecharts has 38k and 4k (BEST). I also wonder if Demon's Souls could've sold even better if it wasn't for the shipment issues, but I guess we'll never know.

Well, without the weekly "Wii is fucked in Japan" discussion these threads tend to die out.

I don't think re-releasing Dragon Quarter on the Wii would really be a great business move.

I got it from here. I don't know where the higher figure came from. I haven't been following the numbers for so long and I don't keep track of every figure released, so maybe someone else can tell you the actual source. The Best figures are from the newest leaked numbers.

Also, if we go by MC, we have 63k by the end of 2008 and the best guess for the budget version is 16k from the blog that leaks supposed MC numbers. Which gives us 79k, putting both trackers close to each other.

Thanks, I checked some stuff and seems like your first link is more up to date, for example, here we have some miscellaneous up to date figures as of 04/11/2009 and that puts LBP @ 111,160, which is the same number from the link you gave. Garaph and japan-gamecharts have older numbers of 99,984

Yeah, especially SW3. I assume with the bundles and special CCPro they'll be willing to give it proper advertising. Maybe famitsu expects people will just ignore this for Mario.

I guess their accuracy with recently dated titles coming later this year isn't anywhere as good as those others who are being released in less than a month, or so I suppose to find an explanation to some really low numbers there.

So, coming soon titles, I'm amazed by their Persona 3 and Mario & Sonic numbers, way stronger than I thought. FF Gaiden is so low and no legs (they expect the first shipment to bomb?). Given the push, Bayonetta doesn't seem stellar either. J-League is okay, inline with the 2 latest versions. Same for WE2010.

Comparison to their Sep. forecasts:

[PS3] Final Fantasy 13 (Square Enix) FS 800K-960K / TF 1.00M-1.50M
[PS3] Final Fantasy 13 (Square Enix) FS 830K-1.04M / TF 1.00M-1.50M

First week barely up. Still one more prediction to go...

[NDS] Layton Kyouju to Majin no Fue (Level 5) FS 180K-250K / TF 510K-660K
[NDS] Layton Kyouju to Majin no Fue (Level 5) FS 200K-270K / TF 540K-690K

The last one opened with 361k. Guess anything can happen.

[PS3] Bayonetta (Sega) FS 110K-130K / TF 120K-160K
[PS3] Bayonetta (Sega) FS 80K-110K / TF 110K-140K

Revised down. I don't know why would you expect big things from it. Ninja Gaiden caters do the same type of audience and it doesn't even cross 100k. So, if this one can do it, Sega should be happy. We'll see.

poor Full Metal Alchemist can never take a break, they always bomb. Although its not as bad as the Wii FMA game.

I think their estimates for Sengoku Musou 3 and Tales of Graces are a little low for the total forecast.

Not sure on Musou but that seems way low on Graces...they are predicting it to sell on line with ToS:KoR..

The Wii game could not have done too badly, its got a sequel coming out in December

FMA games just must be cheap as hell to make

I don't think the long-term prediction for XIII is really centered right; I'm thinking a range of like 1.4-1.9 million, with my own estimate in the bottom half of that. Though as I think about it that must be a problem with the first-week estimate; if FFXIII only ships 1m its first week it definitely won't get close to 2m LTD.

The Graces estimate seems extremely low to me too. The game should absolutely outperform ToSKoR by a decent margin.

I wish I could say the 4WoL estimate was too low too. :(
