That doesn't matter. Wii doesn't have to be "OMGoodness, #1 with a bullet!" But it could be doing a whole freaking more like a PS2 (would be #2 in this market) if third-parties hadn't abandoned it from almost the get-go. Japan has seen the earliest and, thus far, worst impact for Wii due to third-party abandonment. If it was "just" Wii with PS360 games, it'd be doing a whole freaking lot better, right now.
Yeah, we talked about that a lot. Or better: we talked about that back from the beginning. Let me just add that: third parties are happy that Wii's days are almost finished, because, as someone pointed out, it was an anomaly, a problem for them. It was a problem to develop for it with the Wiimote in mind, to find the right audience, to switch to SD again and so on. So, obviously, they willingly contribute to its weakening. Of course we can debate how important this was in comparison to the mistakes made by Nintendo itself, but one thing is clear: this is the outcome they wished and hoped for.

I hope Epic Yarn burns and crashes. Its such an awful, awful game.
It really isn't. At worst, it's boring. It's clearly technically well made though; packed full of content, presented very well (and visually quite novel), a wide variety of very well composed music, lots of different mechanics, tight controls, the level design is clever if not particularly deep, etc.

I think there's a case to be made that the game (like, for example, the Starfy series) is so simple and easy that it's not enjoyable for experienced gamers, but then you're basically getting into an audience-game mismatch, but it's not "awful" by any reasonable definition.

Only 2 Layton games were outside Japan with the third just releasing. Ace Attorney has a limited audience in West. Capcom must thank Level 5.

I think Ace Attorny would have a bigger audience if more people knew about it. It is a game that needs ads ran during law and order.

some place.. far away. yes, that will do
Heh, went to a couple of game shops today. Floor presence for Move is absolutely non existent. You can see it behind the counter if you're looking but other than you wouldn't even know it existed. GEO didn't even have the software out, really dire.

Though a local chain (like the responsible business they are) actually moved the guncon version of Time Crisis 3 to the front display (at ¥6000, no less) despite Big 3 Shooter being on the regular PS3 shelf for cheaper :lol

Vanquish has lots of presence but it's stupidly expensive.

There is ONE and only one thing that has brought the Wii where it is right now: its inability to run the "common denominator" games, namely HD games with decent/good online content. That's it, is just that. It is not nintendo not developing games fast, not 3rd parties having bad, fanboy feelings against nintendo or the Wii having alienating motion controls.

Publishers care about money and nothing else and these generation is multiplatform all the way. I am sure everybody would have done a Wii version of every single HD "AAA" hardcore game, had the Wii had the ability to run them and that way, the Wii's new audience would have felt compelled to buy the awesome games instead of the piles of garbage the Wii is known for.

the Wii basically being a gamecube has the Wii where it is now.

This experiment of keeping your console with last gen, outdated specs exploded in their face, I hope they learn from it.

Nice, im happy for ATLUS especially the way their US releases exceeded the expectations. Catherine will probably also sell more than 150K in Japan - Radiant Historia wont even hit 100K imo.

btw. What is mentioned about the 3DS on the flyer ?

There US titles did way above what they expected , it's great to see ATLUS do well.
Catherine should do above 150k in japan i hope , Radiant Historia i have no idea.

That's not a flyer. Index Holdings had their shareholders report conference today. It just mentions the same series previously announced to be on the 3DS in the future (SMT, Persona, EO, Devil Survivor). No details.

They only mentioned 2 titles out of 12 from Atlus USA. Who knows - the other 10 may have all been bombs, so it's not a sure thing that they did well.

No, it clearly says they did very well. They listed the two biggest selling titles out of the 12 released in this term and said overall sales were well over expectations.

Did they lower some expectations?
I think I remember them expecting SJ to sell the same as P3P.

Maybe the change was caused by the awful rules in the cartridge manufacturing process?

In the previous quarterly report they shared expectations and sales for Persona 1 and that Wii party game. Both surpased expectations (the Wii game, by a lot).

The Gamecube could run just about anything that was released for the PS2 and yet it didn't receive the support the PS2 received. Granted, Gamecube discs held less information than standard DVDs, but the point stands. This isn't about technology. For whatever reason, developers feel they cannot profit on Nintendo's home consoles to the extent that they can on non-Nintendo home consoles. If the Wii was comparable to the PS3 in terms of specs, in all likelihood, there would have just been a repeat of the previous generation where the Gamecube and PS2 could run the same software with minor differences and yet the PS2 still ended up being the favored console by developers.

Honestly, I think the Wii's current situation is largely based on a vicious cycle that started with the rise of the PSone and how Nintendo home consoles lost a lot of prestige with developers as a consequence. The Playstation became the serious home console with the serious developer support and Nintendo's home consoles became less significant and only received scraps in comparison. As a rule, with regard to home consoles, 3rd parties bet against Nintendo.

well Gamecube sold a lot less compared to PS2, didnt it?

Devs do not hate money, so all this crap about favoring this or that is... crap. Sure, there is something about dev relations, and it might push devs to do a bit more but at the end, it all comes down to making money, and unfortunately only Nintendo figured out how to make money on their devices. It probably has a lot to do with audience/user base than same crazy stupid favoritism of particular vendor. At the end of the day, this is all business first, emotions later, otherwise you end up not being able to pay your bills. This is why many CEOs of gaming companies are not gamers but economists who can take cool look at what makes sense and what does not.

The wii doesn't get games GTA4, RED DEAD REDEMPTION, RESIDENT EVIL 5 or FFXIII because the wii can't run them, not because the platform is a commercial failure (unlike your gamecube comparison) or because its fanbase hates videogames or because nintendo sucks at third party relationships.

Around 2008 when everything in the console war was clear, everyone had to make a choice between PS360 or Wii. Considering that Wii on its own and he combination of ps3 and 360 presented both and oportunnity for profit, they just went for the HD content software cause it is where they felt more comfortable developing. Had the Wii been able to run games being made for the HD twins, Wii would have gotten them, there's no question about it. That is the sole reason resident evil 5 isn't on Wii, it is the reason why Final Fantasy XIII isn't there, it is the reason why there are no high profile 3rd party games being announced for Wii right now.

I believe a RE5 port is far from being impossible with MT Framework Lite now running on the Wii. I would expect a downgrade of course.

So, did the Wii not got ports because of its techical limitations or just because big third parties made a bet on another horse?

Nice to see 3DDGH do well in the US, also Demon's Souls.

Although I was expecting DS to be over 500k since it's getting a GH release and all.

Because of techincal limitations, everybody not being nintendo 1st party had to make a choice, namely either HD content or Wii motion controls. Had the Wii been on par with the other consoles, nobody would have had to bet on a horse or make a choice. Everything that has appeared until now for PS3 and 360, would have been 3-way multiplatform from the get go with a Wii port there.

downgrading, tweaking, doing spin-offs and whatnot means waste of resources/money, so everyone just avoids it and neglects the possibility all together. It's too late now anyway for ports or tweaks, this was decided about 2 years ago.

It will be interesting to see what will occur in the holiday period with the 3DS being around the corner.

What titles may score big along with Pokémon during this period ?

If porting difficulty is the big problem why weren't there PSP ports on Wii?

It's kind of amazing that Atlus USA will localize a game they only expect to sell 25K copies. 25K copies is probably something like $750K in revenue for them. I guess the lack of voice acting allows them to do it for very little cost.

I call bollocks on this. Look at rockband where the PS2 got a port of the game but the Wii didn't until a year later. Or Modern Warfare where the game was ported 2 years later. In Japan, lets not forget that the PS2 was still selling lots of software long after the launch of the PS3 and Wii. Lets also not forget the continued support for the PSP by western devs even with the abysmal software sales in the west. We shouldn't forget the lack of ports for some of these games on the PC which is perfectly capable of running them.
To attribute the lack of support for the Wii purely on its inability to run the games made for the 360/PS3 is too simplistic. Some of it relates to publishers not wanting their flagship titles on 'lesser' hardware, some of it is based on an inability to run the games (mainly open world games which are more processor intensive than graphically intensive), some of it is based on sales analysis, some of it on ideas about demographics (fatally flawed in Rockbands case) and some of it is probably based purely on personal bias.

I'm talking about next gen. What I'm saying is that handhelds have been gaining share and that they are going to continue to gain share. That means that a Wii successor is going to have an even harder time in this market than the original did.

They sold 70 million units all at a profit while disproving a longstanding industry myth that cost their competitors billions.

At first, it was because publishers were very stupid. They got an idea of the "Wii audience" in their head, supported by dumb "analysts" spouting the same nonsense, so intentionally didn't even attempt porting to Wii.

After a while, and the non-Nintendo industry having huge financial issues, it because a risk issue. They couldn't risk trying for a larger pool on Wii, when they were just figuring out how to get by on PS360 without bankrupting the company. It was at this point that the Wii being underpowered really came to the forefront. At this point with an easily portable Wii, they would've attempted the ports (e.g. +10% cost), but with the Wii the way it was, they still didn't bother.

No, it was not always about the Wii's power. Yes, it all stems from stupidity in the industry, including Nintendo because, as charlequin has pointed out a few times, if they had moneyhatted some big name ports to the system to get the ball rolling, it probably would've continued. Even the patheticly executed attempt by (still stupid) EA with Dead Space Extraction has ended up with (always porting) Activision putting out a Goldeneye game for Wii with their biggest Wii development team ever.

As much crap as Activision has gotten on the HD side for their handling of Infinity Ward, they've been pretty heavily committed to trying to port to Wii a whole lot more than any other company. It's paid off for them somewhat, as they're about the only company not named Nintendo with a sizable continuing core audience on the system. :lol

Sure. It could still end up doing better overall in Japan than Wii has, though, if it had actual continuing support from third-parties. As we're seeing, that "extra" support is having a pretty sizable difference.

Actually, around 50% of all third party games sold this generation has been on Nintendo's devices.

Pokemon Black / White jumped 2 more places last week (Famitsu tracking) leaving behind Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver and Brain Training. Next week it's Dragon Quest IX and after that it will take some time for Animal Crossing: Wild World and More Brain Training.

Index Holdings (Atlus) expectations for Catherine and Radiant Historia:

Catherine expectations: 150k
Radiant Historia expectations: 138k

http://k-tai.impress.co.jp/img/ktw/docs/401/316/ind11.jpg

Updated shipment figures:

Persona 3 Portable (Japan) - 220k (170k expectated)
Etrian Odyssey 3 (Japan) - 140k (130k expected)
SMT Strange Journey (Japan) - 150k (150k expected)

Demons Souls (US) - 380k (150k expected)
3D Dot Heroes (US) - 160k (25k expected)
Why the very low expectations for this multiplat title? Even lower than P3P (a re-reiteration) and equal to Strange Journey. I bet Catherine is just a Persona 5 budget reinforcer.

It's a new IP and also not a turn based RPG

It didnt really explode in their face, it made them amazing profits. I'm not a tech expert so I cant tell you what else they could have made and still had a good profit on every machine sold.

It's a new IP, and it isn't a genre that Atlus is exactly known for, either. I don't think being multiplatform will really have much effect on its sales, either. 90% plus of the sales should come on the PS3.

150,000 would be pretty good for Catherine, I think.

PS3 is pulling ahead now by a lot this year. I think this year is pretty much wrapped up for Wii.
EDIT: What caused PS3's rise were there some new HDD models coming out or something? nothing released for it. And I doubt it was NBA2k11 unless all 5,000 people that bought it were newcomers.
PS3 sales are up because of major price cuts, and continued developer support, despite low sales for the first ~3 years.

Wii sales have dried up because no one aside from Nintendo is making anything for it.

It really isn't that hard to understand.
