Wii barely went up. But Mario Collection is coming to the rescue.

Black and White logs its 5th week at no. 1. Next week it'll be dethroned by Mario, so it won't break the 8 weeks record set by Diamond and Pearl (Famitsu).

PS3 is pulling ahead now by a lot this year. I think this year is pretty much wrapped up for Wii.
EDIT: What caused PS3's rise were there some new HDD models coming out or something? nothing released for it. And I doubt it was NBA2k11 unless all 5,000 people that bought it were newcomers.

I'm very disappointed for Kirby. Then we wonder why Nintendo did not want to develop hardcore games anymore. Shit, every of them seems to sell much worse than predicted. Even B-games like Wii Music or re-re-remakes like Animal Crossing City Folk sell much better in the end.

If Donkey Kong Country Returns bombs as well, hardly will Nintendo shift his development teams to the hardcore side anymore.

I don't think it is -- GT5 might not even come out this year.

Its only ahead by under 40K. While I don't necessarily disagree, it's still too early with the end of season coming up.

Even if it doesn't, Nintendo doesn't have the kind of launch lineup that the PS3 is getting anyway. there is just no hope for it to catch back up i think...unless the 25th anniversary edition of mario does gangbusters.

Amazing numbers for Pokemon.

Meh numbers for Kirby. At this point, Nintendo-published Wii games in Japan that aren't super casual are definitely lagging behind expectations. I'm sure that DKCR and The Last Story will be the exact same.

One of the big adjustments Nintendo has to carry out with the successor of the Wii is to build up a more solid audience. The reason is clear: even if the Wii sold like crazy for 4 years, it now appears that its audience did not buy games for the system anymore. The score of Kirby illustrates exactly this problem: only the remaining small fanbase seems to care about what's coming out for the system and thus games are really sent to die.

I think that Nintendo needs a successor of the Wii. Next year. A presentation at E3 and then worldwide shipment between september and december.

Ah, a smart move would be to move Skyward Sword to the next system as launch game, like it was with Twilight Princess. Otherwise I think the game will really sell very poorly.

I think anyway that Donkey Kong Country Returns will be a good test: if it revitalize the Wii at least a little bit and at least in the U.S., then maybe Nintendo will gain some additional time. Otherwise, I repeat, I would not waste a Zelda on a dying console.

That's the thing tho, the mario 25th anniversary game is going to sell big, even with GT5 if it is coming out this year in Japan, it might not be enough to make up for the mario boost.

Mario should do gangbusters. It should also be noted that, according to Famitsu, the Wii is still ahead of the PS3 by ~30k. I just don't think the Wii is 100% sure destined to sell less than the PS3 this year in Japan.

Nintendo hardware/software always tends to get a bigger boost in the holidays than other manufacturers/publishers, so it's certainly possible Wii may end up ahead for the year.

I just don't see a compilation of old mario games selling a lot, but I'll eat crow if I'm wrong.

Hold up there guys. Mario Galaxy 2 did fine.

Compare Epic Yarn to Wario Land Shake or Yoshi's Story, not to a class A title - which it clearly isn't - heck, even I didn't buy it and I can't remember the last Nintendo published game I didn't buy on day 1.

The Famicom Mini releases were HUGE. Whether old Mario games can sell systems is another issue though.

They like money, thats why! I don't see anything wrong with that. There might be 1 or 2 games for you and me who are sweatty old geeks with Metallica T-shirts but the revenue is coming from everyone else in the family, mate.

I wonder if Nintendo got caught off guard by the decline of the Wii?

Thinking they should concentrate on the next DS against (At that time) a stronger handheld competitor. While the Wii on cruise control destroys its competition.

Suddenly the PS3 slim starts to take down the Wii in Japan while the 360 slim start to take down the Wii in NA. (Probably not so much those being slims but more PS3 got down to an OK price and 360 got a revision so people stopped being so scared of faulty hardware) And bam now its looks like the Wii is the one that needs a successor first not the DS unlike 2 years ago. With all their resources put into the 3DS launch their only option is letting the Wii flounder pretty much killing all momentum the Wii achieved and basically going back to where they were with the GCN.

Had they known then what we knew now. (Death of PSP in western markets both hardware and software, PSP Go, Fall of Wii, Rise of 360 and PS3, stability of DS.) We probably would be talking about the next Wii instead of the 3DS right now.

That shit keeps sinking, with everyone on team Nintendo going to 3DS the future for the platform isn't looking too bright. Next year they'll break the software drought record with ease.

How are Kirby and DKCR not casual friendly? Does everything in Japan have to be Wii something or Mario? Kirby gave PS3 a hardware bump. :lol

I disagree. I think a Wii successor would only alleviate the problem temporarily, and its success would be more short lived than the original Wii. The Japanese market is clearly being disrupted by handhelds and that's where Nintendo's success will be. A new home console would only serve as a temporary must-have item before the market returned to the current status quo. The only thing that could really help Nintendo's home console line is a Pokemon-like phenomenon. Something that could revitalize an old, yet popular system. And even then, I'm not sure that such a phenomenon could help the home console line for more than one generation.

Nintendo's the one that developed their market that way.

Of course. Nintendo did a mistake shifting the development teams from casual stuff to hardcore stuff thinking that casual gamers would have bought their hardcore games. Or better: they did it too late.

If this shift had been conducted one year before, probably the console's life span would have been enlarged and games would have sold well. The hype was still high at that time. But Nintendo still seems to have some problems in bringing to the market games regularly; probably because they make a lot of artistic experiments that take an undefined amount of time.

For this reason, or for misjudging the evolution of the market or for overestimate the capabilities of the Wii, or whatever, games now are coming out in a situation of end life cycle like it was with the gamecube during 2004/2005.

Of course I'll admit that it was not that easy to read as evolution. In fact, Wii dropped very fast after 4 years of craziness. Normally, one would think that, or the console is a fad, sells like crazy for 1 year and then drops like a rock, or it sells like crazy for 4 years and then it drops slowly. Hardly one would suspect that a console that sells so well for 4 years then start to drop so fast.

Probably Nintendo realized the problem too late, because it is anyway true that in Japan the signs of that evolution appeared earlier and one could have though that the same, sooner or later, would have happened even in the occident. But it's also true that DS showed analogues signs when PSP 3000 and Monster Hunter effect came out, but later, DS could still affirm itself as a long selling portable system thanks to the heavy third party support. That Wii hadn't and still hasn't and this also explain why is dropping like a rock.

And if I were Nintendo, I would not necessarily make Wii HD a motion controlled system, since Wii's audience is not a faithful audience like a fanbase. Doing the same, just HD would be IMO a big risk and probably the console would sell nowhere as good as the Wii.

Nintendo has of course of bring HD, but with something once again totally new. Like 3DS is bringing 3D without glasses as major point, whereas the original DS had mostly the touch screen as major selling point. Well, we'll see.

Did I read the Pokemon number right?
I mean I know I didn't follow it closely but 4Mil already?
WTF!!!!
Imagine the number it'll do worldwide!
That's like the most profitable thing anyone have right now!
And for Kirby I blame Other M!
Actually for everything wrong this year I blame Other M.

I think that would be one of the three major mistakes Nintendo made this gen. The other two would be losing their momentum with the release of Wii Music/AC and not developing enough software to support M+, which made people who bought the Wii for motion control games feel cheated.

Yeah, Nintendo got off guard probably. But my opinion is that Wii's performance has little to do with PS3 and 360. It has mostly to do with the total lack of third party support and Nintendo's inability to bring out games regularly. Ah, and the fact that no Wii game really sustained the system after Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus.

Anyway, I agree with the dude over saying that we all had expected to see at least a decent third party support after 70 millions consoles sold. For many reasons we repeat since 4 years of course not as consistent as on HD systems, but I would have not bet a penny on a similar emptiness. That's really a situation that is comparable with the Gamecube. And the Gamecube sold 4 millions in Japan and 21 millions worldwide. Hardly a so straightforward link could have been done.

About Kirby being hardcore: sure it is more than Wii Sports/Wii Party/Wii Fit. And I would not say it is a mass market targeting game like Mario. It's more like Zelda somehow.

Wii Music and AC "failures" sure had an impact, but Nintendo catched up nicely with New Super Mario Bros Wii., Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus. The problem was solved. Things went wrong after that. Even Motion Plus had an impact, but I would not say a major one. Motion Plus was important mostly in the west with games like Red Steel 2 and some EA sports games. But sales of Wii in occident started to slow down just some months ago, and thus one could think that Wii Motion Plus did not sustain the system, but I would not say it damaged its sales.

The point is that the system has not enough games. Third parties sabotaged the system from the beginning while Nintendo could not convince them to develop for the system even before it peaked. And Nintendo itself hasn't had any major driving games since 2009. Mario galaxy 2 and Wii Party sold well, but they did not drive the system.

As said, Donkey Kong Country Returns is the last possibility. But I doubt it will have a large effect. Only fans remember Rare's DKC and fanbase on the Wii is very weak.

If nothing new is announced to follow Skyward Sword, I'll agree. I'm all for moving it to a Fall 2011 (in Japan) launch with Wii 2, though. Motion+ built-in to every controller standard.

My viewpoint may be skewed, but I'd imagine that most people who bought Wii for motion controls are probably fine with the system. Pointer controls being separate. Traditional gamers who bought Wii primarily for motion controls are probably a very small number. *shrugs*

The Wii has a lot of serious problems in Japan. Using Kirby as an example of these problems is misguided IMO.
