Reposting some of my comments in the previous thread here to continue the discussion:

duckroll said:
I wouldn't say Re:Coded "bombed", but so far the debut definitely underperformed. This was expected though, because retailers were already hinting that the game wasn't getting much traction in pre-orders, and it didn't seem like there was a ton of interest as normal.

It should be noted that this is a remake of the cellphone game, which most KH fans in Japan would have already played if they cared about it back when it was released over a year ago. The DS remake was created mainly for the western audience who were unable to play the mobile version.

The marketing for this in Japan was also a lot lower than usual for a KH game, and it was announced at E3 in a very quiet manner, and released in Japan just a few months after that.

Macross Frontier shows that if you bundle a demo or a throwaway interactive experience into a blu-ray movie which would have sold pretty well on its own, you can increase the sales even more. It also indicates that the otaku fanbase in Japan are well informed enough that it doesn't matter whether you sell the movie in video stores or game stores - they'll know where to buy it.

Also, interesting note:

RDR PS3+360 = 96k
Re:Coded = 95k

Nomura suicide?

And to Spiegel's point about > 55% of LTD, that's true, but with such low opening sales, I think it won't have an issue selling out an initial shipment of 200-250k. Maybe it won't, but it should get close at least.

I recall there was a bet made on warning a huge podcast appears on the sales of Red Dead. I forget exactly what it was going up against.

Hang in there, Ookamiden! You can break 100K!

Is it just me, or is Pokémon saving Nintendo's software LTD for this year?

Wii Party and Galaxy 2 did decently as well, but yes, Pokemon is really saving Ninty's ass this year.

Now that NPDs have stopped, I'm surprised more sales-agers haven't flocked to Media Create or Famitsu threads to make up for the loss of NPDs.

I'm curious to see how strong is the nostalgia effect, considering that Mario is today as popular as ever. And considering how New Super Mario Bros. DS and Wii performed.

Capcom used to publish GTA in Japan prior to TT setting up offices over there.
Yeah, I know. Take-Two has already published Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City in Japan, so obviously they would also publish RDR.

Why Capcom? Take-Two is the publisher in Japan.
Not that it has any bearing since they sold it off, but well, Capcom did create the Red Dead franchise initially.

Basically I googled "Red Dead Redemption Japan" and "Red Dead Redemption Take Two Japan" and there's a whole lot of noise and old articles and not a lot of signal. I was aware that Capcom published their older games and I was just looking for clarification.

Didn't notice that it says Take Two right there in the OP. Doh. :lol

Looks like RDR did even better than Dead Rising 2 in Japan.
Also surprise Kingdom Hearts ReCoded debuted so low with less than 100,000.

Pokemon may not have a deep story, but the game mechanic is waaaaay deeper than most RPGs out there. It evolves a lot of strategy and moves that make it feels like a fighting or strategy game than an RPG.

That's a really big drop for Okamiden.
Was the shipment just small?

Last week gave me some hope for the franchise too.

NSMB will break 6 millions in Japan by year's end if it gets any kind of 25th anniversary push...

Who would have guessed when it released? It still has a chance of beating SMB... Crazy

Some comments about sales...

02. / 00. [PS3] Gekijouban Macross F: Itsuwarino Utahime - Hybrid Pack (Bandai Namco) - 152.699 / NEW
Fucking ridiculous. Previous best selling Macross was:
PSX Macross: Digital Mission VF-X - 100.978 (LTD: 255.185)
Back in 1997! Its also not just above PSP games debuts, but also nearly both their LTDs (161k and 149k). Not bad for a macross demo with extra movie :p

03. / 00. [NDS] Kingdom Hearts Re:coded (Square Enix) - 95.505 / NEW
I think we were anticipating it but SE still probably aimed too high, although understandable given 358/2 did so good back then. Wouldn't surprise if it hits bargain bins soon if they really shipped 250k.

04. / 00. [PS3] Red Dead Redemption (Take-Two Interactive) - 70.599 / NEW
07. / 00. [360] Red Dead Redemption (Take-Two Interactive) - 25.673 / NEW
So damn nice. Reminder:
[PS2] Red Dead Revolver (Capcom) - 10.429 / 22.182
[XBX] Red Dead Revolver (Capcom) - / 2.917
Little by little its getting more usual to see western big guns doing respectable numbers on the PS3/360. Found its niche I'd say.

05. / 00. [PSP] Class of Heroes 3 (Acquire) - 30.572 / NEW
12. / 00. [PS3] Class of Heroes 3 (Acquire) - 14.892 / NEW
Not that good, its about the same debut as Class of Heroes 2 on PSP only but I think Acquire was expecting a bit more going multiplatform.

08. / 00. [PS3] F1 2010 (Codemasters) - 25.273 / NEW
Best start for a F1 game since:
[PS1] Formula 1 '99 (SCE) - 39.578 / 88.878
So better than all those on PS2, PSP, PS3 from SCE or EA

Hardware-wise, PS3 so-so with such hot software sales lately. Oh well.
