I shall predict now that Super Mario Galaxy 2 will sell at least 950K in Japan. I wrote it off, but week after week, it keeps trucking along.

NSMBWii looks set to crack the four million :D

Soo... is it safe to say that the PSP will finish with a higher LTD than the Wii in Japan? Never realized that 33% gap.

How long will it take for Inazuma Eleven 3 to hit a million? Will it even be able to do so by the end of this year?

Oh wow, didn't notice that New Super Mario Bros Wii was so close to 4 million.
I definitely think Super Mario Galaxy 2 can get 1 million+ with the holiday bump.

If it can move back up above 10K starting in November and have a pretty big week at least once in December (like around 40K-50K) then the chances are looking good. I personally expected this entry to have made it and surpassed Inazuma 2 quickly, if not for the hype alone, but in retrospect, maybe it was too soon.

It depends on how soon Sony decides to release the PSP2. It does look pretty much set in stone that the Wii finishes lower than the PSP, unless Nintendo does something fairly drastic with the system. The PSP has regularly outsold the Wii for 3 years already.

Seemed to me like a Monster Hunter Tri situation honestly. Lots of retail hype, big orders from retailers, huge initial shipment. The demand was sort of there, but not enough to remotely sell out the initial shipment and it just trickles along. Since the initial shipment was 920k, and it doesn't look like they'll be selling that out anytime soon, do we really expect retailers to order much more if it eventually starts to sell out?

We don't have Media Create numbers but Famitsu has FFVIII second week at 1 million.

A Dragon Quest entry has sold over a million units in its second week, IIRC.

Ah, beaten and corrected, I see.

I don't even know if that's good or not for RGG PSP.

It's less than the console versions, but considering it's on PSP and it's a spinoff, and it probably has 1/10th the budget of a console RGG...they made money?

Thanks. It has been awhile since I've done some pixel counting. :lol

Nintendo also lowered their forecasts for the fiscal year.

DS
- hardware: 30M -> 23.5M
- software: 150M -> 125M

Wii
- hardware: 18M -> 17.5M
- software: 165M -> 135M

3DS is included on the DS, by the way. So, I guess:

3DS
- hardware: 4M
- software: 15M

DS
- hardware: 19.5M
- software: 110M

I was going to ask curiously whether Zero no Kiseki was supposed to be out this week (since we were making predictions last thread), but that's September 30th. Never mind then! (Still gonna eat a bit of haberdashery if that K-on thing sells more than 50,000 copies.)

Anyway, Black/White having the second best 2nd week ever isn't a bit surprise, although we really aren't going to see a big second wave of sales until December. A whole lot of the fanbase relies on mommy 'n daddy buying that as a gift, and they'll probably put it off until they have to.

Anyway, man, really not that much to discuss beyond Pokey Mans, is there? SMG2 is still doin' okay, but everything else is tracking pretty much exactly as you'd expect. I do wonder if Winning Post will lose money, though.

not exactly 1/10th the budget but of course it's way cheaper for them to make a game for the PSP compared to PS3 .

but i think there is a potential for some great legs considering that there is a related drama to be aired in December .
not to mention the manga and the offical video clip song by RIZE .
SEGA is really trying to push this game in anyway possible . we should wait and see if all of this will help at all ...

Surprised that the DS went up. Black and White definitely have a shot at 6 Million down the road.
Not really surprising. Since Pokemon went Saturday release this is the case.

51.412
63.859 -> Platinum
61.242

68.728
77.677 -> HG/SS
79.628

39.749
85.770 -> B/W
89.199

Now that 3DS lost the 2010 window I start to believe that 6 million will be the low bar for its LTD. If it has a 3rd week close to 500k we could see 5 million sales just this year.

Some additional information for Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary.

The Special Pack will hit on October 21, priced at ¥2,500. It will be available only through January 10, 2011. Nintendo will produce and ship the product through that date as demand requires.

The other big anniversary product shown at the event was a surprise. Iwata announced a special Super Mario 25th edition of the DSi LL system. This will arrive on October 28, priced ¥18,000, the standard DSi LL going price.

800000 second week. Mother of god.
I did a double take to make sure I wasn't mentally inserting an extra zero there.

Those 1st/third party breakdowns are pretty telling, by the way. Looking at the unit sales breakdown, Wii third party sales are anaemic, DS is a monster (and despite the 1st to 3rd party ratio being near 50% still sells more 3rd party software than any other platform.

Also, consoles have become nigh-on irrelevant (I still don't see viewing them as part of the same market as being useful or sensible, by the way - we'll have to agree to disagree on that count)

Yup. I definitely got that one wrong as well.

I don't claim to know why mainline Mario games consistently have huge legs when basically every other core-ish series in Japan gets worse over time, but they consistently do. 950K would put it at around Sunshine (~35%) as the worst Mario legs in Japan. Expecting "mini-legs" of a 55-60% first week ratio just seemed "out there" to me, based on the history. *shrugs*

*shrugs*

I think what I didn't anticipate was that it seems to have taken some of NSMB Wii's sales. Did not see that coming.

Yup. This is the exact opposite of what I expected, which was for NSMB Wii to take potential sales from Galaxy 2, but instead, Galaxy 2 has delayed NSMB Wii's ability to sell past the 4 million mark. I knew that both platformers couldn't co-exist on the charts at high numbers, but the game that would rank consistently higher is not the one I was expecting.

It's worrying that NSMB Wii hasn't contributed to any (noticeable) growth in 3D Mario. Any users NSMB Wii may have brought to Galaxy 2 might be offset by owners of the original who haven't bought the sequel. Will Galaxy and Galaxy 2 be outsold by a port of Super Mario All-Stars? Probably. :lol

I shall predict now that Super Mario Galaxy 2 will sell at least 950K in Japan. I wrote it off, but week after week, it keeps trucking along.
Yup. I definitely got that one wrong as well.
Back when Galaxy 2 started falling behind Galaxy 1's pace due to Galaxy 1's big holiday bump, I tried suggesting that Galaxy 2 was actually holding up quite well in comparison considering how many months were still left to go before Galaxy 2 finally made it to the holidays itself.

With even a fairly small holiday bump (~15k per week for the 2 or 3 big holiday weeks, and ~10k a week for the first couple weeks in December), Galaxy 2 would have a shot of reaching 950k by the end of the year (or the first week of January). If it manages that, then a million is a lock eventually. Even if doesn't quite make 950k by the end of the year, a million still seems pretty certain at this point. Galaxy 1 kept crawling on and on for a LONG time.

Also, dont forget that GT5 will support PSEye, and thats 2 weeks after the move is released.

Next week releases (07/10/10)

[NDS] Kingdom Hearts Re:coded (Square Enix)
Wow. Already? I thought this would be coming out spring next year or something.

Square-Enix and Nomura's team really churned this out quickly.

(Easier to copy and paste =P)
So, Nintendo has a ratio of over 40% of total sales of games this generation in Japan. Quite a big one.
