at this point, it looks like Other M would be lucky to match even Zero Mission worldwide.
We really need to wait for US numbers before saying this. Corruption did 1.5 - 2 million worldwide and all we know so far is that Other M is doing better in Japan but worse in the UK. Neither market make up a significant part of the Metroid audience. (Corruption sold 75k in Japan and less than 100k in the UK.)

3DS will cut sales from every other system this November/December. Everything will be down Y-O-Y at Q4 (PSP can be the exception).

We don't even know the UK figures for Other M - all we have are placements. It's likely that - since weekly sales are apparently fairly low across the board just now - that Other M hasn't sold as much as Corruption, but actual figures aren't there.

Still, that doesn't change the point - Other M will match or fail to match Prime numbers based on its performance in the US.

Zero Mission is on the same boat basically with America being the deciding factor. that's why i compared to it.
but looking at the reactions, it looks like it will sell closer to ZM than mp3. ZM sold around 500k in america so it wouldn't be really a bomba but it would be worse than mp3 which i think was close to 1 million here.

I just want it to validate itself for Nintendo to consider it a strong franchise. Hoping they can reach that 1.5 - 2 million worldwide.
Not happening. Corruption only barely managed to get to 1.5 million and that was the final chapter of the popular Prime series.

Metroid has just never been a huge seller. Even Super didn't do that great. It's just never had the mainstream appeal of Mario and Zelda. That said, it's still one of Nintendo's more popular franchises.

It'll pull around a million worldwide, probably, and I'm sure that'll be enough for Nintendo. They won't be overly happy with it but poor sales haven't killed the franchise yet. Zero Mission, Echoes and Fusion didn't sell that hot either.

The only thing that concerns me is that Nintendo may have gone overboard with the budget and won't get the returns it's looking for. Other M looked like it cost a fair wack of money, and its marketing was pretty solid for the series too.

Anyway, as for its performance in Japan, it'll beat them all except for probaly Fusion, making it the second-best selling Metroid of the last 10 years in Japan.

Fusion sold better than Super iirc. it is the one after M1, mp1 and RoS in sales.

i believe the sales order is like this atm:

M1 > mp1 > RoS > Fusion > Super > mp3 > mp2 > ZM > Hunters > Pinball

Other M is likely above Pinball and Hunters and it depends on next NPD where it falls related to the following 3. it will need 1 million in NA to beat Fusion and Super since Super sold better in japan but worse in US than Fusion so they should be very close overall.
mp2 should be barely at 1 million overall and ZM is definitely below 1 million because it had around 500k in US. reaching higer will require a miracle since RoS is supposed to be close to 2 million and both M1 and mp1 are above it. the Trilogy doesn-t make much of a difference since it sold worse than Pinball most likely.
it looks like US is the territory that decides the sales placement since the release of mp1/Fusion. the series does about the same range in both Japan and Europe with the big numbers coming from america (mp2 had like 700k and mp3 800-900k. Hunters had something like 300-400k and Pinball was very low in the under 100k area)

having hard numbers would be way better but NPD and European trackes suck hard.

I wouldn't think so.

It's still more popular than Donkey Kong, Mother, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, Kirby, Pikmin, Punch-Out, and Star Fox.

Donkey Kong being the debatable one there but I'm going by its recent performances rather than the successful Country series.

Donkey Kong has been mismanaged for years, but I think DKCR will sell well, and Kirby is pretty popular. It's definitely more popular than the rest of their stable, however. Metroid certainly does well enough for Nintendo, even if it isn't a huge blockbuster franchise.

i'd say Metroid is among the lower popular series that still get major budgets. Kirby, DK and even the Mario RPGs alone sell better most of the time. the only other series that do lower are niche stuff like Fire Emblem, Advance Wars and Wario.

the big three are easily Mario/Pokemon/Wii _____

then comes SSB/Zelda/Kirby + stuff like AC

then comes DK/Metroid/Wario and other comparable games

then comes Fire Emblem/Advance Wars and other niche titles that get made often and get enough sales to profit.

i don't know how Metroid got the perception that it was a big series since it has never sold that good. Mario Kart Wii alone has probably sold more than the entire series combined.

of those, only Mother, FE, Pikmin and Punch out have sold worse than the best selling Metroids. the first F-Zero had better sales than any Metroid but then the series had a horrible fall off and is now dead.

DK was massive in the DKC days and later DK64. Kirby Sells millions with each release in several territories. Star Fox was massive also in the SNES and N64 days and, like DK, was mismanaged since then but a new main game would probably smoke any recent Metroid game easily.

It always struck me as strange that people would refer to metroid as part of the big three along with mario and zelda. I think the new donkey kong country has a strong chance of outselling any metroid game, hell it has a decent change of outselling mario galaxy world wide.

I always assumed the "big 3" was more or less referring to quality and prestige, not necessarily sales. Mario, Zelda, and Metroid are by far the best 3 series in terms of quality, and they have been around the longest.

I hope Metroid doesn't do really poorly, it wouldn't exactly look great for the series if the Metroid game with biggest budget and marketing bombs. I mean wasn't Nintendo disappointed with the sales of the Prime series, and Other M was supposed to be a game that sold significantly more?

the most popular franchises are wii___, Mario, Mario Kart, Pokemon, Nintendogs, Brain Training and maybe Zelda

Also Kirby is way more popular then Metroid. It is a constant million seller in japan.

I'm confident that the bold ones are more popular than Metroid.
Also Star Fox sales were better than Metroid in nineties.

As for the Metroid discussion, it's clear that it isn't among Nintendo's biggest sellers, but it has a decent niche fanbase and it is a prestige title that fills a gap in Nintendo's line-up. If Other M really underperforms in the US it may be retired for a while, but it's not going to disappear.

Azalyn is interesting in that his actual store is incredibly small, anything he says about what is going on in his store is basically worthless info. However he seems to have very good connections and relationships with wholesalers and a great overview of the market, sense that makes his predictions spot on. Anyway This weeks predictions from him:
____

Front Mission - Both systems 50% sell-through. 60,000~

Yugio - 50% sell through. more of a weekend seller type(also it's a 3 day weekend) game so 70-80,000 is possible

Halo reach - 60%上~ over 40,000

Blue roses - Sales are really split between good and bad stores, 15,000 as a hopeful prediction

It's definitely not more popular than Kirby.
Super Star Ultra in Japan alone probably managed to do more than what Echoes, Zero Mission, or Fusion did worldwide. Though Japan is Kirby's strongest area, it certainly is no slouch in the US (though Europe's kinda weaker), and does almost as well here.

Then there's Mario (with spin-offs like Mario Party, Mario sports, Paper Mario, Mario Kart, and Mario & Luigi all being bigger as well), Pokemon (with Pokemon Ranger and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon being bigger too), Zelda, Wii games, Brain Age/other training games, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros, and maybe another series or two that I can't think of.
And the Layton games have also sold more than the any GC/GBA/DS/Wii Metroid in the regions Nintendo handled it, but you can't really consider that a Nintendo franchise.

Nintendo's biggest problem with Wii in Japan right now is that there aren't many things they can do.

Even when they make some smart moves they fail to follow them.

New Play Control series: For the budget and purpose they had they were definetely succesful and helped Nintendo to fill some gaps with Wii's empty release schedule.
Dead since June 2009.

Media Create:
11/12/08 [WII] New Play Control! Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat (Nintendo) - 25.266 / 108.805
25/12/08 [WII] New Play Control! Pikmin (Nintendo) - 49.731 / 169.036
15/01/09 [WII] New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis (Nintendo) - 56.509 / 205.070
19/02/09 [WII] New Play Control! Metroid Prime (Nintendo) - 7.215 / 21.519
12/03/09 [WII] New Play Control! Pikmin 2 (Nintendo) - 28.706 / 137.653
11/06/09 [WII] New Play Control! Chibi-Robo (Nintendo) - 11.202 / 39.847
11/06/09 [WII] New Play Control! Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (Nintendo) - 2.342 / 7.216

These titles at least helped Wii the first half of 2009. Second half of 2009 had very strong at releases, NSMBW gave to the system some of its lost glory, Iwata said they had learned from their mistakes and then comes the first half of 2010.

The only ''big'' title released for the first 5 months was Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, until Galaxy 2 arrived at the end of May.
As expected all the NSMBW hype was gone and Wii was again where it was at June 2009, waiting again for a strong second half (more like strong last quarter) to cover some of the lost distance.

Another mistake: Everyone's Recommendation Selection series that played (somehow) the role of New Play Control series this year look to be discontinued although many of the games they included did respectable sales.

The situation for Wii the last 2 years (that is the same for 2010) is: Nintendo releases the big guns at second half of the year, gets big hardware and software sales from them.
They know they will have almost zero third party support to help them fill the release schedule at first half of next year so they hope that the year end tiles alone will keep the moment.
When the time comes this doesn't continue they start releasing games hoping again for big hardware and software sales at the end of the year and the cycle goes on.

Without third party support this won't change. They don't have unlimited resources and development teams must also work for 3DS, DS and Wii 2 at some point.
So they are stuck and this starts to look the scenario for 2011. Empty first half, one or two big releases for summer and the big guns at the end of the year.
The only title right now that will come out somewhere in Jan-June 2011 (Golden Week?) will be Inazuma Eleven Strikers.

Nintendo conference after 2 weeks will be important for Wii's future (Q4 2010-Q4 2011 I mean).

Could THIS be the year of the PS3? it has to hang on with the lead till December 31 to count
it will be
if not 2011 will be
look at TGS there were no games announced for wii. the japanese game development community has abandoned the wii in favor to PSP, 360 and PS3.

I expect some Nintendo games but 0 thirdparty announcements. Wii is dead thirdpartywise. Sad thing that no one even tries to speak to the 10 million audience the wii has sold to. But it looks like third parties think that a 6 million userbase (PS3) is superior to that.

Well, it is superior for the kind of games that the majority of the third parties do.

We could argue about the reasons why this happened but that's the reality now.

i dont know did anyone try to release something on the wii ?

last time i remember someone doing that was MHTri and Tales of Graces.
while one was a miserable failure the other one did sell at least some copies.

also why dont they try to make games that are actually selling on wii. (aka casual or kids games)

I thought that's all they were doing. There is a ton of low-budget, cheap Nintendo rip-offs that aim to kids or ''casuals''. Deca Sports 3 this week for example.

kids games and casual games =/= low budget, cheap nintendo spinoffs (i believe that you mean rip offs. because spinoff would mean they use nintendo characters.)

you can make kids games that are actually good like mario or pokemon.

Trying to clone Mario and Pokemon never worked and won't work. Copying exactly what Nintendo does is the problem not the solution.
im not talking about copying here. im talking about games that appeal to the kids or the casual audience. third parties have done that successfully in the past (sonic, inazuma, layton to name a few).

We'll have to wait and see. Until now Nintendo always reveals new (first and third party) games at their conferences.
wasnt this one a pure 3DS conference though ?

Nintendo's biggest problem with Wii in Japan right now is that there aren't many things they can do.

Even when they make some smart moves they fail to follow them.

New Play Control series: For the budget and purpose they had they were definetely succesful and helped Nintendo to fill some gaps with Wii's empty release schedule.
Dead since June 2009.

Another mistake: Everyone's Recommendation Selection series that played (somehow) the role of New Play Control series this year look to be discontinued although many of the games they included did respectable sales.

.
I think that the limitation of the Mario 25th Anniversary pack is also a big mistake

they should sell this normally and not only for a certain period of time in limited numbers. it could be a million seller but they are blowing that despite the need of a high selling evergreen title.

Why would you think that the conference is of any importance for Q3 and Q4 2011? I doubt that Nintendo will make any announcements for the second half of 2011. They never used their fall conferences for those. It's much more probable that they will announce their line-up for that time at E3 again - like they are doing it every year. See: the announcements of Kirby and Donkey Kong for this year's holiday.

Actually, I don't think that Nintendo are going to show much or any Wii stuff this year, let alone new announcements. The fall conference is essentially the 3DS conference this year and they will absolutely focus on that. With luck we will get some new trailers for Wii's year-end line-up and maybe some info on their games for the first half of next year.

You are forgetting about Mario Sport Mix and Zelda btw. Both titles (especially the Sport Mix) have decent chances to be released in the first half of 2011. Their is a decent chance that Last Story slips into the first half of 2011 too.
