Good to see you back, JoshuaJSlone! If you want, I keep all the translations of mine in a table, so you could use that to fill in some of the more non-sensical names.

Yep. Was there when trying to churn through the Top 1000. :lol

Japanese consumers seemed to be able to perceive the upgrades with every new DS model and thus were willing to pay.

We also can't ignore how Nintendo went about the upgrade. The DS Lite was considerably beyond the original in design, for only 1800 yen extra. Not only that, but the original was phased out anyway, so for a few years, only the DS Lite was available and the DS was effectively not a 15000 yen platform anymore.

Then DSi comes out and has a bunch of new features. It removed the GBA port, but it wasn't hard to convince people that there were things about it that made it more expensive than the DS Lite.

Then the DSi XL comes out for a mere 1200 yen more than the DSi. And it's bigger, so that's easy to justify.

With all three post-original DS models on the market, people could choose what they wanted. They chose the DSi and DSi XL since 2008.

So, by that pattern, is 3DS worth the extra 7000 for a market used to paying between 16,800 and 20,000 for a handheld (24,800 if you include the original PSP)? From what I could gather yesterday, yes, but it's a question of longterm sales rather than short term interest.

Yyyyyeouch, that is a pretty bad showing for Mass Effect 2, especially given how much that must have cost to bring over. I actually wonder how many people interested just "imported" the game for PC via Steam or something, though - a lot of folks interested in western RPGs in Japan can speak a decent amount of English (more penetration than Japanese has here at any rate), so a lot of the market might have played the game already. Hm.

Still, a 50% drop from ME1's debut can't mean anything good. I wonder if they'll bring over the PS3 version and how that might sell?

Achievements are already in Japanese for ps3 so it's likely.

Two core reasons here 1. everything has been dropping on x-box 360
Fable 2 First week: 36.085(Dec.18th, 2008)
Fable 3 first week: 25.448(Oct. 28, 2010)
I believe it's lost active users(You can get a 60GB VIVA Pinta/ace combat pack for less then 10,000 yen used)

2. JP folks know about the PS3 version, believe it to be better.

Dragon age Origins next week should be a much better indicator of things.

So this is the week we start our little prediction game for this year. What to predict? Top20 is on really low numbers so somewhat interesting releases are pretty much locked to show up. I'm pretty sure we're having Valkyria 3, Kenka 5, Oreimo and The Last Story but kinda wondering about Dragon Age PS3 and Dream Club 0. Any input?

So since I dumped a bunch of new data I was looking at various aspects of it, I noticed something about total software sales. I've got PSP and Wii around 50 million, and GBA around 55 million. Of course none of these are comprehensive, and GBA is probably missing more due to being more active in a time of fewer Top 500/1000 lists, but in the broad view I think it's safe to say both PSP and Wii will be passing it up this year.

Haha, yeah. One of the things I found funny when putting all the Top 30s together was noticing how few new Wii games were making the list, compared to new X360 games. Though Wii Party seems to have outsold those X360 games.

If we consider it a Xeno title as they probably wanted people to when they went with that name, it had less of a drop than Xenosaga had from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3. I've last got Xenosaga III at 181K in Famitsu--but then, Famitsu has Xenoblade a few ten thousand lower, too.

Well huh. I had some game Babelfished as "The girl I'm in love with Sister Portable", but it ended up listed as just the romanization cvxfreak listed it with: Otome wa Oneesama Boku ni Koishiteru Portable. I thought the translation must have gone horribly awry, but if Namco Bandai releases something titled like this, maybe not.

Media Create NDS, WII CY 2010 new releases top 20 {2010.01.04 - 2011.01.02}

018. [WII] FlingSmash (Nintendo) {2010.11.18} - 35.913

Flingsmash did surprisingly well considering its placements in the charts and it only came out a couple months back, it wasn't ever in the top 20 IIRC, or even the top 30?

How it did 35k is quite a mystery to me.

Edit: Slight correction, it was at #25 during November 15-21st, its debut week:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=413965

After that it dropped to the 40's for a couple of weeks before vanishing, then only coming back once after Christmas, then nada.

So the Wii could be down so much due to The Last Story launch this week ,but the ps3 is selling just to sell it seems. Maybe people are buying move bundles.

Huh, look at that. 20k more than we thought it did! Is it still selling full price?
I wonder if it made it to 2nd shipment.

Are you confusing Famitsu and Media Create trackers? It did ~140k based on Famitsu's tracking.

Really hope VC3 does well so that it gets localized.

If it does really, really well in Japan, wouldn't that actually decrease the pressure for a worldwide release, especially with the PSP tanking outside of Japan?

Then I hope it does well enough to make a profit but not well enough for Sega to feel satisfied with it.

Ah, mayhap I am. I've been quoting around 141k. I thought this was off-the-chart growth of around 20k from the last time we saw it.

3DS line-up predictions will be interesting. I have no idea of how Nintendogs+Cats, SSFIV and Layton will be doing together. For me, Nintendogs+Cats will for sure be first, but how close will be the 2 others?

SSFIV didn't even sell 200k on consoles in Japan, don't think it'll be very significant on the 3DS at all. Nintendogs and Layton will be the main sellers.

DS: ¥15,000
DSL: ¥16,800
DSi: ¥18,900
DSiXL: ¥20,000

So for all of those people who claim "I will be waiting for the 3DSLite", they will be actually able to get it for 300$ in a couple years.
Just a joke. :lol Or perhaps not?

So I noticed at my local game shop it's 16,000yen for a us PSP model

Yes, the PSP shortage situation is so bad that at major chain stores they are selling the Us import models.

In celebration of Sony's amazing lost opportunity, I present to you the oosaka's king store's survey he took of his retailer friends: 2010's top Chance loss games(Around 12 different stores, in no way a valid sample, but fun anyways)

Games that sold-out quickly/ far above exceptions and retailers weren't able to get new shipments in fast enough, thus lost the most profits.

Retailers blame chance losses on the distribution system. Retailers take 100% of the losses on unsold games(no return system) so they are very reserved in ordering. If they order 100 copies and 8 don't sell, they are in the red. With profits like that no choice but to sell used games.

2010 Top Lost opportunity games
7. Metal Max 3(DS) The Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki (PSP)
6. Corpse Party(PSP)

5. God Eater(PSP)
51RBMoE62CL._SL500_SY90_.jpg

Retailer's voice
-I believed this was going to do well, but it ended up selling beyond my imagination. It takes a lot of courage to forecast a new IP is going to sell this well and then order that much.
- There were lots and lots of inquiries, difficult to deal with it all. From early morning people came in for GodEeater.

4. Monster Hunter Diary: Poka Poka Airu Village(PSP)
518VMDMI5dL._SL160_.jpg

Retailer's voice
- I ordered weak because I was worried about how much monster hunter fans would accept the game, I underestimated monster hunter's power.
- Once again I felt monster hunter's power, Regular children and Girls customers were seen in droves. I did an order based on a estimate of 300,000 sales nation-wide and it wasn't anywhere near enough.

3. Art Academy(DS)
51tIBsVFROL._SL160_.jpg

Retailer's Voice
- Educational software that doesn't sell, really truly doesn't sell at all. It's impossible for a normal buyer to do a large order of this type of software. Even if I went to order a large amount, other staff would stop me

2. Mag(PS3)
612Ulg3kEdL._SL160_.jpg

Retailer's Voice:
- Any store hesitates a bit when ordering Online only games: If it's online you can just download it. Also the fact you can't sell it used affects orders.
- Lots of inquiries, The wholesalers didn't expect the success at all, Tried to do a follow-order for the first day, wasn't able to get it.

1. Fairytale (PSP)
51CBXPIS8dL._SL160_.jpg

Retailer's Voice:

- Konami New ip Monster hunter-rip off: It's media exposure was low, so had no exceptions of it. Still, even today have no idea why it sold so well.
- Lately, Anime related games haven't had a hit, so I did a conservative order. There's a sequel coming out soon, no idea how I should order.
- If it wasn't Konami I would have ordered more, saying that doesn't help things though.

I've seen a lot of talk from publishers, about nintendo's distribution system being horrible for lost profits, takes forever to re-order. Any thoughts on chance losses/ solutions? Why has sony messed up so badly?
