Yep, Sony and Microsof celebrate their pyrrhic victory: The best ranked title on a Nintendo system comes at only no. 9.

Quick, someone find out the last time something like that happened.

Catherine's first week sales put it at Atlus' 5th best-selling (modern) game of all time in Japan, 2nd best first week sales for an Atlus game in Japan (second only to Persona 4).

Well Nintendo had a good run.

For some reason I thought 3DS was released last week. Is it this week then?

edit: This Saturday huh. Should be fun.

Atlus was expecting Catherine to sell 150k copies this fiscal year

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
So I'm guessing Catherine is Atlus' second biggest launch (first being Persona 4)?

Edit: Beaten.

I wonder if Nintendo knows they're still selling a console.

It doesn't seem like anyone else does.

I'm not sure if this is sarcastic or not.

In any case, to expand on my post: the Wii is obviously in a (relatively) un-salvageable downwards trend, the PS3 seems to be trending nicely YOY, and the PSP has experienced incredible sales on the back of MHP3. However, the Wii has been trending downwards and/or coasting at low sales for a long time, and the biggest difference between Nintendo's sales YOY, with the DS, can be explained by the fact that the 3DS is launching on Saturday.

Yes, Nintendo should be half-worried, but they should have been half-worried for a long time.

As for the good sales on Sony's platforms recently, congrats to them, fwiw.

Did The Last Story and Catherine get any good marketing in Japan?

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Sony forcing people to buy PSP/PS3 when they enter stores confirmed

The Last Story had an online conference thing with a surprise Iwata appearance, some TV commercials, console bundles, flyers and in-store advertising and a soundtrack release etc. etc. much better marketing than Xenoblade got. I don't know about Catherine.

Catherine got tons of marketing in print and at retail over a long period of time + a popular demo + tons of fan outreach stuff + the cover art for the PS3 version is basically "BOOBIES! SEX!!! BUY THIS GAME!".

3DS won't save Wii's number

Well, sure, but it will cause an overall surge in sales of Nintendo platforms such as to justify the half-serious suggestion that an entire country is suddenly investing in a single corporation, which can be summarised pithily as "switching brands".

I can analyse the phrase even more, or we can both agree that we were making jokes that don't particularly hold up to close investigation. But most jokes don't.

I'm asking for those trivias on the thread because I can't properly check now where I am. =P

Okay things are getting extremly intresting: we've seen pretty much all the middle-tier ps2rpg makers that put out games for next-gen improve thier sales compared to the last generation. Even ,bloody level 5, white knight chronicles sold better then Rogue galaxy and the dark clouds(although that one could be explained by RPG DROUGHT)

We've talked a bit about in the past, but anyone want to do some more anylazing of why this is so?

If this was a big factor we would see some PC games at the top 10 :p

I know for certain that Catherine got a huge marketing boost (based on Siliconera reportings). Not sure about the The Last Bomba, but I don't think it would have helped at all, that public is not there.

Because most of these middle-tier companies are/were smart while Square Enix, SEGA, Konami, Namco and all are fucking stupid splitting up their fanbase across platforms or just simply neglecting them.

Forgot to say how happy I am for Catherine good results. Not only for Atlus or because the game interests me (still not sure about it after the demo), but because I imagine SMT 4 /Persona 5 with Catherine graphics and that makes me smile.

So what's going to keep Wii above 10k?

There's the multiplatform SD Gundam and Rune Factory next week, Inazuma Eleven Strikers in April and some TBA games (Zelda, Dragon Quest X, Pandora Tower and Rythm Tengoku).
I seriously can't see something like DQX staying exclusive when there's no active Wii userbase and we can count on the fingers of one hand all the announced and dated Wii games.

On the other hand, I would like the game to stay exclusive to see if it can pull usual DQ numbers.

I feel that Japan as a market is reaching a point where it is simultaneously easier and harder to find success. Let me explain. I feel that the ceiling of success has gone down for most genres, which is to say, how successful a game can be is limited much more than before. This makes it very hard for previously huge selling franchises in these genres to be able to retain such success.

On the other hand, I feel that what were previously more niche genres or sub-genres are starting to find more and more acceptance in the market, which means that titles which would previously struggle to sell 100k, now find that they can sell 200-300k relatively easily as long as they target the right demographic or pander properly to more hardcore fans.

Basically I think that the sales floor is starting to rise, while the ceiling is starting to get lower. This would explain what we're starting to see. Obviously there are still certain titles which buck the trend, but these are also titles which generally are either extremely strong in terms of mainstream/cultural penetration (Nintendo casual games, NSMB) or very successful in tapping into multiplayer portable play (MHP, Pokemon, DQIX).

FFXIII and GT5 are examples of extreme decline because they are very high profile titles which exist in a state which has failed to capture the current trends in Japan. So they are basically selling on brand name alone, and with the huge sales they have to live up to, they are no longer able to retain that market share.

Will Catherine be released in the west?

Not announced yet, but yes it will.

Atlus has a very good record of localizing internal titles; the titles that it passes on are generally completely non-viable--no offence to the four Growlanser fans out there who hate CRAPLUS!!!!!

I think the reason is more to do with having less RPGs on the market this generation, so the market is way less saturated. There is still a harsh upper ceiling, since this generation hasn't had a single machine explode the way PS2 did.

And to think we have more than a few insisting that Nintendo will actually wait until 2013 to launch a Wii successor...

Is it possible that the incoming 3DS is eating into all console/portable sales, if someone more experienced could answer that would be great.

As people hold-off on buying the current-gen systems in favor of waiting for the 3DS, is that plausible at all?

It's mid-February — hardly a time well-known for massive sales figures.

I don't know think this is a very good comparison. GT3 and FFX launched pretty early on in the PS2's lifespan when there wasn't much to play and GT4 and FFXII launched with an insanely huge userbase. I think both series' style is falling out of tune with gaming, but I don't think it's fair to contribute their failings to their lack of change to be more like MHP.

Really nice for Atlus/Catherine. New IP out of the gate doing better than LTDs on SMT Strange Journey, Kuzunoha Raidou, Digital Devil Saga or Persona 3 FES and bigger 1st week than Persona 3 and SMT3 Nocturne, its pretty spectacular.

Looking like this year it'll be all about PS3 consolidation, PSP last hurrah and 3DS first steps.

Btw after extensive prediction work (about 9 times as much as a 10-user on a 4-games-set week) the 3DS HW averages 418,408 from our predictions.
