You know Sega and Square-Enix fucked up when their expansion-sequels to Phantasy Star Portable 2 and Dissidia do worse than Namco of all companies did with its light director's cut God Eater Burst.

Post-MHP3 landscape could be the reason, but it makes me wonder if Namco will feel confident to do God Eater 2 on PSP or wait until NGP is out.

Also, MHP3 over 4.35m its over DQIX+budget release, best selling 3rd party title in japanese history.

Since God Eater/Burst sold well, a sequel is almost inevitable.
Wow. I never thought MH game will outsell DQ game.

So the talk about how much the Top 10 matters versus the Top 30 and so on got me curious. So using the Famitsu data, I found the average of all games ranked 1, 2, and so on I've got in the Garaph database. I didn't do anything complicated, so some times of year are probably represented more than others, some weeks without 21-30 ranked skew things a bit, didn't see if things are significantly different now than 2001, didn't try to account for weeks with GINORMOUS releases in #1 as incredibly abnormal, etc. BUT

Wow. I never thought MH game will outsell DQ game.
Especially considering that the DS userbase is so much larger than the MH userbase, that is crazy. Wonder how Capcom will handle the franchise from here on out considering it's now the most popular 3rd party franchise in Japan.

So with PSP essentially being the "Monster Hunter Portable" system for Japan this generation, if MH came to 3DS this gen, would it be similar to MH3 on Wii? i.e. A Monster Hunter game not on the Monster Hunter system. How much impact would adding back in the portable, play together aspect make compared to MH3 Wii's performance?

Well, I think it all really comes down to two questions:

-- Is Monster Hunter Portable so monstrously successful (pun intended ;-) ) because of the unique features and gameplay the PSP brought to the series?

-- Are players prepared to move to a new platform for a new entry in the series if that platform offers the features they found appealing in the PSP games?

I suspect that the answer to the first is a resounding "yes", but the answer to the second is the one I struggle with. I'm not at all sure that the audience would move en masse, and I think that when MHPNext hits either 3DS or PSP2 we'll see a fairly significant drop-off. Will be interesting to see.

3DS seems to be doing fine but much below the internal target, if that's the case. Btw next week will tell a lot about sales legs.
PSP is still doing great numbers, PS3 fine, Wii bad.
Over 600k to date, with another four weeks to go? They're going to clear 1 million sold handily, I think, and they're certainly going to end up shipping 1.5 million if the ~250k per week shipments we saw mentioned were accurate.

The game matters not the system.

MH3 is the best selling CONSOLE MH ever. No matter were MH is it will sell well. Unless if its on a 600 dollar system.

I am not familiar with the shipping forecasts, but if they can supply/sell a steady 200K/week in the short term, that would put it around 1.4 million as of the week that ends April 3.

We had this info from get-6:

Initial shipment for 3DS will be 400k, 200k for each color. Retailers are not taking preorders for this shipment anymore as it's almost sold out.

Next shipment will be 300k, followed from another 250k, meaning Nintendo will ship 1 million 3DS in 2 weeks.

That's just astounding. Who would've thought that in the span of a little over 5 years, a moderately selling franchise would go on to topple Dragon Quest and become the most powerful 3rd party franchise in Japan?

Truly amazing!

Just because one entry sold that much does not mean its the most powerful. Plus DQ is not as open as MH is in terms of character customization , weapon, etc. It nailed a formula that Japan loves. Grind, Collect, Level, Repeat.

One thing is for sure: hunters are playing it on PSP because there isn't a Monster Hunter game on NDS. There's no competition.

Now the situation is different, and history has shown us it's not wise to associate a brand to a specific platform.

Ya, I was going to say. I thought that Monster Hunter Freedom Unite was over 3.5M when you add up the various releases. At least off the last two releases, it would seem that Monster Hunter is now up there with Dragon Quest in terms of popularity.

Monster Hunter Poka Poka Ailu Village 3DS amirite, or am I right?

I can't see a main Monster Hunter Portable game not being on the NGP. But if it's NGP/3DS I imagine that will actually hurt the franchise as its main appeal is playing with friends, and that would be hard if you own an NGP copy, and your friend has a 3DS copy. But, I also can't see the 3DS not getting a Monster Hunter game.

It's also difficult to compare it to previous franchises since no multiplayer focused handheld super power has ever traded places.

The only thing I can't see is Capcom splitting the "community" between the two platforms.

If they choose the NGP for the first game, they'll stick to it. If they choose the 3DS, they'll stick to it. From that point onwards, only a catastrophe in terms of hardware sales in one platform would cause them to switch over.

The dragon quest series sold much more than MH. Though it is amazing how popular MH is but one is a true JRPG were the other is different. Still amazing for MH glad to see more popular games in Japan they need more million sellers other than nintendo.

Hmmm. I had always figured that if they could put it on both, that they would. Hadn't thought about it being exclusive this portable gen. Has Capcom made series-motivated moves like that before (i.e. cut out an easy port to preserve the "community" of a series on a single platform)?

I don't think there's a precedent, but if they're smart, what I said is what they're going to do. Monster Hunter is a series with a following. The boost PSP sales get when a new game in the series is released shows that fans will go anywhere the series is.

If you split the player base between two platforms, they'll buy the game in the platform they already have or that their friends already have, and the community will be shattered. If they release the game in a single platform, though, the community will remain intact, and sales will probably be about the same as if it had two versions, since fans will buy it anyway.

The system was so packed together already, they can't really make it smaller. What else would they change?

Nintendo should have kept the Mario bundle going at least. Other than that maybe they could have added more memory ( free SD card at least) , a wireless sensor bar, or even made a model that looks like a Famicom. The only thing they refreshed is the Wiimote but they failed to support that with software to sell it.

Starting from March 2004, the first MH release, I have:

Dragon Quest: 18.97 million (17)
Monster Hunter: 14.45 million (11)
Final Fantasy: 13.28 million (40)

Number of unique titles in parenthesis.

While we don't have complete data, the titles released in the first 7 years of DQ and FF amount to something like this:

Dragon Quest: 13.6 million (5)
Final Fantasy: 9.12 million (6)

Well, do you think either company is willing to pay for it to be exclusive to their platform?
I understand Capcom has their mobile MT framework that works on both platforms and it would be foolish of them to neglect either market just to preserve the "community" of MH.

10%!!

We know Persona whatever had sold around that, and we know Mass Effect 2 sold "double-digit percent" on PSN. Enough evidence to me.

Wow, i almost nailed it 8D Gracias por tomarte las molestias en hacer esto todas las semanas Kurosaki ;)

Btw Chris, do you have a 2011 release list for the 3DS? I was wondering which title could be the first to cross the 500.000 LTD (Layton, Nintendogs, Zelda?) and which could be the first million seller.

Thanks in advance!

Well, do you think either company is willing to pay for it to be exclusive to their platform?
I understand Capcom has their mobile MT framework that works on both platforms and it would be foolish of them to neglect either market just to preserve the "community" of MH.
I don't know if they're willing to pay for it, but they definitely should be. The series made the PSP the success it is in Japan.

Despite what Nintendo has been saying, if Wii 2 doesn't come out in Japan by the end of the 2012 FY (end of March 2012), I will be shocked. And confused as to why Nintendo isn't doing it.

I genuinely think Nintendo has something up their sleeves for E3, whether it's a remodel of the console or a successor, they know they have to do something now or the Wii is dead within a year in Japan (and not soon after that the rest of the world). In any case, 100 million Wii's is certain, which is something to be proud of for Nintendo and co.

In regards to the 3DS VS NGP thing for Monster Hunter. It really is a toss up at this point.

Capcom have already shown a version of MH3P running on NGP that uses 2 analog sticks and that's an obvious control advantage that the NGP has over the 3DS (though the 3DS' touch screen could offer camera controls, making it a better fit for the series than the PSP was)

On the other hand, the 3DS has the advantage of lower dev costs (the cited reason why MH3 was moved from PS3 to Wii) and the 3D effect for monsters coming out of the screen. Streetpass could also be used for trading items and such when you pass by someone else.

Plus the 3DS will have the advantage of a larger user base (though that didn't stop Capcom from putting the series on the PSP)

In the end, I bet it'll come down to who is willing to pay the higher price for exclusivity (and Sony are very likely to win that battle)

Monster Hunter on PSP started as a quick cash-in port.

As I said before, it's not like Capcom had a platform option, do you think they would support the PSP if the NDS had a similar hardware?

Iwata praised the Monster Hunter's success a few months ago, I'm sure Nintendo is willing to pay for such a franchise. Sony will offer their support as well, but are they going to moneyhat all the development and marketing cost? NGP is pretty similar to PS3, after all.

NDS still outselling Wii? Ouch. Never a good sign when a last gen. system is outselling a current gen. system.
They're the same gen., though.

The bigger picture is that portable gaming has taken over Japan - hence the designs of the 3DS and NGP.

I hope Capcom put MH on 3DS, but I have a feeling Sony will do everything in their power to make sure it stays on PSP(2) - it pretty much salvaged the system (at least in Japan) for them didn't it? Now look at the success it enjoys.

The question remains are Nintendo willing to counter and aggressively chase it too? The support they gave MH3 shows maybe they do realise its importance. Imagine Pokemon, Mario, DQ and MH all on 3DS.... knock-out power potential if they got an exclusive.

If its multiplatform and neither version is seen as the 'proper port' it will be interesting to see where fans go.... perhaps the PSP2s price and at the time user-base will decide that.

I do think 3DS will get the next version of MH something something, but the next next 'real one' will be PS3 and then PSP2 for the portable version.
