With regards to change at Nintendo:

I think one important question in these cases is "can they continue on in this way?"

For example, I don't think Sony could afford to keep having PS3 situations, that huge initial loss. Maybe I'm thinking too much on it, but things like PlayStation Vita's off-the-shelf parts and the move to paid online strike me as ways to stop those huge losses.

I would assume Iwata can't keep taking salary cuts, but who knows.

Nah he's been doing the DragonSworne routine for just as long :p

also glad to see your "member" status quickly reinstated :)

Haha.

Back to the topic on hand, did the PS3 get a price drop during New Year's, or did Sony step up marketing for Sony products?

Sony systems do well just after New Year's, don't they? Has something to do with kids getting new years' money, not sure how that works.

At this point, without knowledge of how it did in the US in the last month, there is no way it will hit Mr. Pachter's target, let alone Mr. Iwata's.
They both simply misread the market, to varying degrees.

That's my point. When they both made those forecasts the Wii U was hardly selling at all. They knew that the Wii U would be competing with two newly released consoles at Christmas and even if they both assumed that both Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World would sell like hotcakes that still doesn't explain those forecasts.

Er...no just because people make ridiculous forecasts does not mean there is a reason

Not sure if serious lmfao. What do you think they do....pick a number at random..?

You know FY2013 ends in March, right? Do you think the mere announcement of a Pokemon Wii U game would sell 6+ million hardware units, or do you actually think Nintendo is going to launch a major Pokemon game in a few weeks with no press?

Face the facts, Iwata and his financial team were on some Mario shrooms when they came up with that Wii U sales forecast.

Iwata made a big prediction because he wanted to talk the company up, or possibly bc he genuinely expected 3d world to be huge as heck. Patcher made a less ridiculous but still pretty huge projection bc he knew iwata was going overboard but couldn't completely rule out that nintendo actually had secret plans to justify iwata's projection.

You're arguing that patcher has insider information driving his prediction, that not only did one of gaming's most uptight companies have a leak, but that it only reached a single analyst. That seems too unlikely to be believed. Odds are that he has access to no more info than the public does about nintendo's future intentions by way of investor briefings and game announcements.

If a mario game didn't do jack, then a Pokemon game won't do shit. especially if it's a non mainline Pokemon game.

Obviously, they had been planning on floundering up until Pokemon Wii U's announcement the whole time. How else are they going to have a come-from-behind win?

30./30. [3DS] Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon <ACT> (Nintendo) {2013.03.20} (¥4.800) - 11.798 / 994.535 <80-100%> (-12%)

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon should become a million seller next week. <3

No, that 9 million has been instated since early last year, and pachter's 6 million was just him overestimating the Wii U this holiday. You completely misread what I said. Just because pachter predicts something doesn't mean there some special reason or he has insider info. It's just a prediction. And no even if Pokemon came out this January Wii U couldn't come close to 6 million.

I don't believe Vita has ever come close to hitting SCE's projections. I don't follow their PS3 figures too closely, but I believe they're often fairly close to reality as of late. They'll be off on PS4, but I doubt investors will cry.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
So FFX HD is the best selling HD remaster so far?

I am really happy for the Vita's small rise, it deserves this considering the number of good games that came out lately, Dragon's Crown, Ys, Gundam breaker/Musou, FFX/X-2, Tearaway, KZ:M etc.... I know they don't come out all within this week, but they do help to build a better image to this wonderful portable. Go Vita!

It sound as if you gain something from this?

For me, the worse Wii U sells the faster I get a new Nintendo system. I don't want another Wii situation where Nintendo waits too long without a suitable system in the market.

Wii U should have come out 2010 and the next Nintendo system should come out 2015.

TBF that was the GameCubes far and away best year. It already had smash bro (it's primary system seller in the region).

Wii U gets Mario kart and Smash bro's this year.

Without any sort of big japanese franchise on the Vita it will never begin to sell like it probably eventually could, so Sony is going to have to force the issue at some point.

How exactly is Sony gonna "force the issue"? Don't you think they would have tried already?

I meant those hentai-esque trashy games like the 3DS one that asked you to rub the girl's panties.

There were a bunch announced for Vita but I never saw them chart and their names are too obscure to figure out.
Oh. Those are not eroge. In any case, there aren't really many viable platforms to put them on in the first place. At least, there's more Senran Kagura on the way for 3DS and Dream C Club will be on the PS4. Probably a metric ton of the stuff for mobile.

Just a quick summary of the Vita performance in 2013:

I am convinced it's because you no longer need a memory card for it. The memory card costs put me off the vita. If this models releases overseas I'll get one, for retail games it's perfect.

I'll post the full, comprehensive Top 50 analysis of software and hardware sales as usual when it releases in a few hours (it should release before 8 AM EST / 6 hours from now).

Considering what they did last year, Dengeki will probably release Week 52 and Week 1 at the same time.

Please. I am happy for FFXHD but if you are gloating because 4 games over 2 systems sold as much as one game on pretty much one system, then you are just being ridiculous. LR still has sold a ton more than any individual FFX HD item. I am rather curious where the other 7 or so + million that bought the original FFX and X-2 are though.

Personally, I hope solid sales of the Vita version will inspire SE to go ahead with some VITA FF projects like...I don't know....Type-O.
Worse spin of all time.

I think it has more to do with the time of year and less because of the Vita 2000.

Maybe somewhat, but didn't Vita have a shitty holiday 2012?
There's probably a few ingredients are work here, but I'd think the new model has to be a noticeable piece of the pie. The new model, the improved flow of software, the memory card price drop, and the hardware price drop from February are all definitely helping.

Face the facts, Iwata and his financial team were on some Mario shrooms when they came up with that Wii U sales forecast.

Japan companies routinely overestimate forecasts. No one believes them anyway. They are aspirational. Iwata was predicting 10 million Gamecube sales a year as well.

This is simply a bad argument. WiiU did much better than expected in Japan over the holidays. You are taking LTD data and using it to castigate holiday sales.

What is Dengeki? Is it accurate? How is it different from other trackers?

Amazing post as always @Aquamarine.

Do you know how much the PSVita sold during the last fiscal year? I suppose that included those March good Vita sales. I'm curious to see if this year it can suprass those re-launch sales.

I went to the Main Bic Camera in Ikebukuro.
Finally, after more than 2 weeks, Attack on Titan is available again (Disney Magic Castle still sold out):

Zelda still sold out, so they just replaced the space and put a lot of download codes:

All versions of FFX are still sold out (except FFX-2 for Vita). Dynasty Warriors Gundam for Vita also sold out.

Can I add some Yodobashi goodness?

Titan, Disney, Zelda, FFX/2 (and Bravely Default!) all sold out. FFX, FFX2 and Gundam in stock.

Disney selling out is definitely interesting, it's also not available on Bic Camera and 7-11 online shops.

Dengeki Weekly Software Highlights: Week 52, 2013 (Dec 23 - Dec 29)

Final Fantasy X / X-2 Remastered
  • 360K opening week (185K PS3, 147K Vita Twin Pack, 23K Vita X only, 5K Vita X-2 only)
  • 80% sell-through (or more) for both versions, total shipment somewhere around ~450,000
Vita only 10k behind PS3 despite having a quarter of the userbase is making me hot. Do we know which platform is ahead on the PSN charts?

Yeah, Week 2 is gonna be pretty brutal for Zelda if the game's all sold out. I believe there's a new shipment (at least on Amazon) this week-end?

And cool to see Titan back in stock. Maybe with this game's success, Spike-Chunsoft will have a bigger budget, as there's definitely room for improvement.

read through the last few pages of the thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=747328&page=53

I do feel now sony may miss a chance to revive the console market in Japan. Initial demand will be OK I assume, If SCEJA can help to port games like Persona 5, KH 2.5, new tales, Sen no Kiseki 2, etc. to PS4, I can see PS4 become really popular and therefore become a healthy platform for mid-tier games. It's pity it won't happen.
