Media Create Sales: Week 10, 2012 (Mar 05 - Mar 11)

They may be buying stuff on PSN. I have ony bought 4 retail games at launch and the rest was digital.

Yeah the tough thing with the Vita is that unless Sony decides to share some digital sales numbers with us (yeah, right!) there is always going to be a larger margin of error between Vita game sales numbers and it's closest competitor, the 3DS. I'm not saying it's going to be a huge margin by any means but it's a margin that definitely exists, especially among the most hardcore software buying crowd like us early adopters.

And even i am moderately surprised

Yeah, i'm curious as to what the difference is. I started out with a plan of going physical on single player games and DD on Multi, but given that i just flat out enjoy the vita more when i can switch games without digging out cards i'm pretty much going full DD.

Not that i expect that in insanely large number, but if it was 10-15% of sales then that would be a fairly decent chunk.

*shrug* maybe the digital sales are doing fine and Sony don't want to p1sh on retailers chips? No idea - as mentioned previously though, for the purposes of MC threads we should assume the sales from DD are ZERO. Without the data it's pointless.

Congratulations to Road for winning by both units and percentage!

I think I suggested using percentages to Kurosaki Ichigo, but I didn't really look into how he's using them. In the NPD Predictions, points are based off of the percentage difference with a cap of 100% off. If they're off by more than 100%, they just get 0 points, no matter how much beyond 100% they're off. There doesn't seem to be any cap on the %s here, so I don't know what the real point is. In the current setup, it's just magnifying a miss on a small target (e.g. Girls RPG). It would seem to make more sense to cap it at 100% to avoid having one really bad prediction destroy an otherwise good set of predictions.

Would you mind doing a test run recalculating the % results with a cap at 100% to see what you think of it?

Shit! I thought by missing the deadline my shame would not be recorded. Damn you Road!! :D
Even more shameful because RurouniZel and Bassforever would at least be among the top 5. You were late and wrong. =P

3 spots above my last rank, nice!

And Road, don't you ever feel weird congratulating yourself in third person? :p
It's to pretend I'm impartial.

Speaking of predictions, we could try these below and maybe more one or two or more (Little Busters for Vita? Mugen Souls for the PS3? Too many PS3 games?). Suggestions?

You're right, there's no cap. (I'm too dumb to understand the NPD points.) But I'll do that test now. =P

Oh wow this post:

Can't wait for the same comments just with an additional U after Wii. :p

And wow, PSV still over 10k. Eventually, it will fall bellow 10k soon. Or is their any game coming out soon that has long legs?

MGS3D extremely dissapointing...I guess it was too expensive and the market wasn't right for it. The Vita game will probably sell better than this.

Were they actually wrong though? The post mocking them back in 2007 was asserting that the Wii winning by some huge margin was a foregone conclusion, but it started running out of steam shortly after FF XIII (Although NSMBWii did push a huge number of units that holiday leading to 2009 being a banner year overall)

Wii began to seriously flounder in 2011 when nintendo stopped put out relevant software for the platform. It was doing very well up until then.

Accidentally copied an INDEX function to an entire column (one million cells). Boy, did that take awhile...

Thanks!

Should I implement the 100% cap?

The top remained the same, meaning most of the movement was in the lower levels, so no one would be losing out on first going with a cap at least with this week's numbers, which is good. I also like the idea of limiting how much one big miss can hurt your overall score.

I like it, personally. Other opinions?

Have I overlooked anything?

Monster Hunter 3G? You have MK7 and SM3DL selling another million this year, but MH3G not cracking 500K. Seems unexpected.

It's been said before, but we were very worried about the Wii with SMG's performance in 2007 and even more so after Mario Kart couldn't keep sales up for very long in early 2008. While compared to the "competition" it was still doing "well," it was very worrisome in its performance in Japan. Japan's been a bad place for the Wii for a few years now, and well before 2011. It really started cracking its armor outside of Japan about a year later in mid-2009.

Well I was more talking about worldwide, but yeah, Wii hasn't done gangbusters in Japan for awhile now. That's partly due to the strength of the handheld market and partly due to the software at hand. When did the scale tip towards PS3 in Japan? Was that more than a year ago? Besides, I still think my point stands in comparison to the competition. Otherwise we're just talking about the console market as a whole and not the wii specifically, in which case it was apparent that consoles were taking a backseat to handhelds in japan a long time ago.

In terms of worldwide sales, wii began sliding in 2010 (2009 was actually its biggest year) but didn't fall below is competition until 2011.

9dkWO.jpg

which is, like I said, when nintendo stopped supporting the system (with the exception of zelda). I think the downward trend would have probably continued (as to be expected of a console packing tech a decade old in its 5th year and nearly 100 million sold worldwide), but it could have probably been softened if they had, you know, put games out for the darn thing.

2008 Wii was approx 3x PS3 in sales
2009 Wii was a couple hundred k more
2010 Wii about a hundred k more
2011 PS3 about double the Wii

2008 to 2009 was Wii dropping about 1/3 and PS3 doubling up. The next couple of years wii slid a little and PS3 stayed about the same. Then 2011 Wii dropped in half and PS3 continued to be relatively steady.

Interesting. So it wasn't so much the PS3 picking up steam but rather the wii falling way behind?

Compared to the PS3, it wasn't doing that bad in 2008, no, but I was more referring to what would typically be considered "good" sales. When Mario Kart couldn't keep it above 40K for long in 2008, we sort of knew things were bad. Most just chalk that up to handhelds pushing out consoles, but I don't think the console market is that lacking in potential in Japan. It's just the way the generation went, the console that should've taken up the banner for home systems didn't get the support, so it all went wacky. I'm hopeful if Wii U can get consolidated industry support, even if it's just in ports, that we'll see a resurgence in the console market in Japan. Maybe not to PS2 levels, but better than the doldrums of this generation for the last few years. :(

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Level-5's girls oriented RPG is currently not showing signs of an Inazuma Eleven or Professor Layton style hit. Girl's RPG Cinderella Life debuted with just 9,519 sales in its first week. Level-5 may have been expecting much more, as this represented a low 31.03% sell-through.

In its weekly sales analysis report, Media Create notes that the slow start comes despite high profile collaborations Level-5 has been holding. In addition to having celebrities play the game for trailers, characters from manga, anime and even Level-5's own Inazuma Eleven series appear as guest characters in the game.

Media Create also reports a middling sell-through for Sega's Hatsune Miku and Future Stars Project Mirai. The 3DS entry in the series that established its popularity (as far as video games are concerned, at least) on PSP sold 87,000 units in its first week, and 70.73% sell-through. This is lower than the 101,000 units and 93.69% sell-through experienced by the first Hatsune Miku Project Diva game on PSP back in 2009.

There's one bright spot, though. Media Create notes that with the switch to cute Nendoroid-style character designs, Sega is targeting a different audience with the 3DS title. The game appears to have reached a higher female audience in its first week, particularly girls in their high teens. We may end up seeing a longer legged sales pattern for the game.

This week's top seller was One Piece Pirate Musou, which took the top spot for the second week in a row and has now sold a total of 746,000 units. One Piece is now the third best selling PS3 game of all time. The current second best seller, Final Fantasy XIII-2, has sold 795,000 units and most recently placed 31 in Media Create's sales chart, so it's possible that One Piece could become number 2 (behind the original Final Fantasy XIII) in a few weeks

Didn't know Girls' RPG had a marketing campaign like that. Makes the bomb look even worse.

But, honestly, I don't even know what demographic Girls' RPG is supposed to be aimed at. I'd assume it's aimed at girls but I doubt girls would play hostess sims?

Is this the worst debut of any Level-5 game?

Btw, even in the case of an overall successful performance, I don't think this game should have debuted much better than what it actually did.

Fair to say that DKCR was the last really big success? Or did Kirby do okay enough?

Would a guy want to play a hostess sim in which you play as the hostess? ;)

It's aimed at girls and games aimed at girls typically aren't that front loaded. We'll see how it develops.
