i wonder when 3DS settles down will nintendo focus on the wii more or will it just get the games that are promised out and the new system will arrive whenever? it's about time. think they should just focus on their handhelds more instead of console and see how that works out for them.

It's Nintendo. In Japan. What do you think?

Wii and DS had their drops last week, due to weekend buying patterns or something. This week was 3DS/PS3/PSP's turn.
Oh, I see.

Do we know how many 3DS are currently out there for sale in Japan?

eh, I think things will only get worse for a while.
Mainly because of the delays though. There is still demand, but it's a little harder to supply, now that there are electricity limitations, and other logistics nightmares.

Software malaise setting in I guess? Things seem kinda low generally, does Musou usually have that level of dropoff?

Also, wasn't Powapro Golf delayed?

3DS coming down to earth...I mean REALLY coming down. If it keeps dropping Nintendo's in trouble. Software isn't doing great either.

PSP fell like a rock, PS3 doing pretty well all things considered.

In the last thread it was said PSP was supply constrained... again.

I don't think that there has been a week this year when the psp has not been supply constrained. Bundles have keep the hardware up some weeks but the usual weekly shipment seemed to be about 40k units.

Seems Sony wasn't able to ship the usual shipment this week.

I took a look at the number of games that were released this year in Japan {2011.01.03 - 2011.03.20} (Twin packs aren't counted as different SKUs, budget releases are included in the total number)

PSP - 55 (20 budget)
PS3 - 37 (6 budget)
360 - 27 (2 budget)
NDS - 25 (4 budget)
3DS - 13 (0 budget)
WII - 7 (2 budget)
PS2 - 2 (1 budget)

Anyone got a Pokemon generation chart update? Is Black and White tracking behind Pearl and Diamond now? I was really excited to see B/W hit new highs for the series with its first week sales, but it seriously appears they were incredibly front loaded.

I took a look at the number of games that were released this year in Japan {2011.01.03 - 2011.03.20} (Twin packs aren't counted as different SKUs, budget releases are included in the total number)

PSP - 55 (20 budget)
PS3 - 37 (6 budget)
360 - 27 (2 budget)
NDS - 25 (4 budget)
3DS - 13 (0 budget)
WII - 7 (2 budget)
PS2 - 2 (1 budget)

Ouch.

Is this kind of a hardware drop-off normal? The 3DS seems to be slowing down pretty quickly...
DS slowed down big time until it got Nintendo evergreen titles. We're talking of doing 20-30k weekly then progressively going up (~30k, ~40k, ~50k) with the software hits. If anything the DS-3DS comparison looks bad for 3DS because DS releasing before Christmas made it have one hell of a start, but by February it was already in the 20-30k. It didn't recover until Nintendo released the Nintendogs-Brain Training Combo (April-May).

Other than Golden Week, I don't see what does 3DS have to keep it over 50k HW weekly. Nintendogs isn't showing any kind of amazing legs (still Layton at the front) and I personally heavily doubt Pilotwings will be resemblant of Nintendogs DS or Brain Training.

3DS really is having a hard ass time. i wouldnt be surprised if NGP takes the crown this gen
It's way too early to make that statement. Let's wait until more high-profile software for the 3DS gets released before deciding how it's going to fare.

bad gameplay lol
Every week now, I just scroll down the MC thread looking for farnham's expected Nintendo gloom and doom post. Was ALMOST too early today. :lol

I don't think that there has been a week this year when the psp has not been supply constrained. Bundles have keep the hardware up some weeks but the usual weekly shipment seemed to be about 40k units.

Seems Sony wasn't able to ship the usual shipment this week.
I should have known better than to think that PS3 could outsell the PSP without a something extraordinary happening.

It's nice to see there is no real shortage of 3DS in Japan, it keeps selling. It keeps going down, but it keeps selling. Should break the million soon enough.

Not normal, at least considering there should be a fair amount of supply; but this is an abnormal time. Here are the early weeks of fellow major spring launches PS2 and GBA.

Famitsu is 2 weeks behind but it gives a better picture

So basically if going off Diamond/Pearl trends, Black/White have a small chance of hitting 6 million? Would be awesome if they could somehow pull it off, definitely deserve it.

Interesting analysis. What big titles are coming out for the 3DS this year? Nintendogs/cats and Layton are already out, if they can't prop up the 3DS for a while I'd be worried. Maybe the high price is hurting it...

The problem is both are just sequels to games that already saw their "evergreen" status. And Layton has progressively dropped in sales with each installment, so while a good game that appeals to the Japanese market, I don't really see people running out the door to pick it up. Honestly I thought Nintendogs + Cats would have performed better, but again I just feel like it doesn't do that much to expand on where the original left off.

Steel Diver and Ocarina of Time are unlikely to cause a significant lasting bump either. The 3DS might not really see any true hardware presence until the holiday season with Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. Which interesting enough was what made the original DS take off.

I think it will fall short of D/P. It will sell well for a while but I think the 3DS really killed a lot of it's legs.

There's still plenty of big software coming out this year. There's Zelda and Resident Evil in June. Metal Gear Solid, Kid Icarus, Mario Kart, Star Fox 64, and Animal Crossing are all slated for this year, I believe.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Imo Nintendogs never was a "real" evergreen in japan - it sold like crap compared to NSMB, MK DS,Brain Training, Pokemon, Animal Crossing and Tomodachi Collection.

@farnham
....waaay to early for such a statement.

I thought the lack of software might cause 3DS owners to resort to old DS software, that being Black/White. But in the end, you're probably right.

One major difference compared to last gen is that there are two handhelds this time, both still going strong in terms of sales and games, at the release of a new one. So people can either decide to get one of those and be treated to a big library of great games (with lots still coming) or opt for the new one with barely anything worth owning (nothing at the moment, imo).

There's more than half a year to go so things can definitely change but so far the NGP might stand a chance, I think.

3DS is unavailable on Amazon (or rather, you have to wait until next Monday before they can ship), are they not getting their share of the shipments?

In either case, videogame sales across the board are going to be deflated for a while due to the recent events in Japan.

Except tomodachi collection the mentioned games sold +5 million.
It sold well on DS, but that was 6 years ago, the market has changed and the higher entry price point on 3DS will harm those kind of titles even more.

Buying video games isn't going to be a high priority for many people in Japan. Going to be a up hill battle for nintendo now.

You gotta remember that DS didn't do that great until the DS Lite came out. It's possible 3DS will follow the same pattern as doing ok until 3DS v2 comes out and lights up the charts.

Same thing happened with PSP. It wasn't until the 2000 came out that it started doing actual good numbers.

Same thing with the PS3 slim.

What I gather from all that is that Japan waits for hardware revisions.

With all the trauma Japan just went through I can't imagine running out to buy a handheld is a priority at the moment..

Surprised sales weren't effected more.

I don't think the kind of early adopters who would buy an expensive system like the 3DS are really interested in games like Nintendogs. The game might start selling when the 3DS hits a price point that's attractive for casual gamers.
