Media Create Sales: Week 12, 2011 (Mar 21 - Mar 27)

Looking at Week 10 and 11's results, it wouldn't be too much to suspect that Disgaea 4 has hit 100k, would it?

Is that a good/expected thing for them?

Does somebody have the sales data for Gundam Musou 3 for me? I was wondering how that performed compared to Dynasty Warriors 7.

I think both Nintendo and Sony are stupid. I personally love the 3DS and the idea that we'll soon be able to play HD AAA games on the go with the NGP but they're both stupid for ignoring the low-end handheld market that made the Game Boy/DS and now PSP(in Japan) take off like crazy.

PSP was very high end when it was released (and still impresses to this day) so not sure what you mean, the DS was a big jump over the GBA as well.

Don't even think MH 3DS will push a significant amount of units. There's a cheaper alternative to playing MH on a portable in Japan already.

It's funny that Sony system software shares have been consistently higher than usual since 3DS launch:

...so you're saying that the enormous MH fanbase will simply stop buying new MHP games? Because MHP is moving to (a) newer, more expensive platform(s) one way or another.

As usual, charlequin put it better below:

What constitutes "brand new" and "fully fledged"? Monster Hunter is a herd-mentality game and a large portion of the fanbase is likely to adopt whatever the new hotness is so they can keep up with their friends who are also doing so.

I mean, certainly if they released an exact port of MHP3 with no added features or functionality, I doubt you'd see much movement, but if they did the equivalent of a MHP3G I'd find it implausible that everyone would ignore it simply because it was on a new system.

Yep, unless a potential MH 3DS is brand new and full fledged (highly unlikely), I don't think it'll effect system sales much.

Thanks.

So by week 3 DW7 already outsold Gundam Musou 3. I guess the mainline series still has more pull. Might also be because I heard that it has a big female fanbase which I guess is not that into a Gundam title.

Yeah, you've got me thinking. Like MHP2G was an expansion of MHP2 and that sold even more. I guess I am not convinced that the people who are enjoying the MHP games on PSP will buy a 3DS. It's one thing jumping into new installments on the same system as was the case with MHP -> MHP2G, but I don't know how appealing it is for a MHP fan to buy a new, fairly expensive system for, say, an expansion of MHP3 (and certainly not for a direct port).

What is your problem? I'm interested in how all the platformers stack up against each other. There used to be a chart with all the mario games, and I see nothing wrong with putting DK and Kirby on there as well. If you think it's DKCR is never going to pass Galaxy, that's fine (I don't know where Galaxy's sales are at, which is why I asked).

Oh yeah. cvxfreak and I even brought that up a month ago.

After 4 chart weeks, 3DS is where DS was at 2.3 weeks (December 12, 2004), where GBA was at 1.4 weeks (March 28, 2001), where Wii was at 3.7 weeks (December 22, 2006), where PSP was at 7.9 weeks (January 29, 2005), and where PS2 was at 1.7 weeks (March 10, 2000).

If MHP3G is releasing before, say, Spring 2012 (highly likely), it wouldn't make financial sense for Capcom to release it as a 3DS exclusive. And if it's coming to psp too it won't make a difference for the 3DS

But with Capcom betting high on the success of the 3DS and some comments from Capcom about MH switching to nextgen portables I guess no one should be surprised if there's an exclusive MHP for the 3DS in the next 12 months.

That's one of the first things I'd have secured if I was Nintendo.

Latest delay:

Media-Create 2011 Game Hakusho was delayed to 04/07 (it was initially coming out 03/30).

Just throwing it out there, in case there's a wealthy Gaffer or lurker with 500 dollars laying around.

Don't take it seriously or offensively. Anihawk just hates DKCR and likes SMG2.

A lot of interesting discussion. Frankly, this generation currently winding down in Japan has taught me that it is very difficult to make concrete pronouncements about system momentum. I *think* the 3DS will be fine, but I also imagine this isn't Nintendo's ideal launch.

Maybe trying to give third parties a good chunk of the software launch lineup wasn't that of a good idea.

Also nintendo launch slots could have ben filled with more appropiate IP's...., maybe they thought they could sell the system with the name alone for the first weeks...

Oh, I see. I haven't played either game so I can't make a judgment on quality. Also, there's no way DKCR is going to outsell SMG2 world wide, but it's interesting to see which platformers the Japanese market reacts to most strongly.

Well, it being an expensive system is definitely an issue. But again, millions and millions of people bought PSPs specifically to play Monster Hunter. :p

Well, I didn't think it made sense to bring Monster Hunter to 3DS at all because it's not helpful to dilute the market of a local-co-op game with two different platform SKUs and they could probably just wait it out on PSP until NGP comes out and transition directly to that platform. But I don't think if they did put a 3DS MH out that it'd tank or anything.

YEAH NIS!

I'm sure Sang site will upload the details in english very soon, but due to great SMASHING success of disagea 4, NIS has revised their earnings way way up.

It's nice to know we will be able to have quality fun time with NIS for years to come.

- Rearranged the company so they plan to release 4 titles a year now;.
- Problems with an outsourced developer cause them to cancel a game and made their profits not look as nice this quarter.

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

Anyone think the sales of 3DS in Japan might be because the Japanese just don't like 3D that much? Kind of how they're not into FPS games. Yeah, you can turn the 3D off but then it's just a moderately upgraded DS. Nintendo's marketing for the thing is all about the 3D functionality... it's the identity of the system. The west probably likes the 3D more so the sales are doing great.

Another thing is that Nintendo might have thought... hey we can release whatever games with this and it will sell on the DS name alone. I think they should have waited till the Fall so they could get a much better launch line-up and knock the air out of the NGP balloon.

I think this kind of thinking, if anything, is behind the comparatively low sales of the 3DS. There sure as hell is a lot of misinformation about it out there.

That's Nintendo's fault.

Maybe they should've connected the dots and seen that every Game Boy after the original lived under its shadow for a reason.

If you're not gonna name your consoles in a linear fashion (PlayStation, PlayStation 2), you gotta change it completely each new generation.

For all I know, the DSi could be the successor to the DS, and not the 3DS.

Awful decision on their part.
