Media Create Sales: Week 12, 2012 (Mar 19 - Mar 25)

Only having Top 50 to see and Top 30 for numbers, it's difficult to see the full picture for lesser systems. Even if it was selling more games per system than any other system, we still wouldn't be able to tell that. Looking at the last Famitsu Top 30 for instance, here are the 3DS games:

18,750
16,234
14,871
14,404
12,502
12,219
10,408
8,534
5,409

If PSV had equivalents of all those games selling a fifth of that (which would be a much better ratio), none would even make the list. This is one reason why when looking at the overall system software sales, you see the secondary/tertiary systems getting big apparent boosts when the Top 500/1000 info is added annually.

Yep, this year will easily do better than last year.

Yeah, 3DS's line-up in Q2 is going most probably to be better than last year, when the only big release was Ocarina of time until September.

On the other hand, PSP did sell well last year and could do a bit worse this time around.

Yes. The software side is in far more trouble than the hardware side. And that's saying something.

Where do you see those software problems ?

Hot Shots gold is above 100k retail
Gravity Daze is close to 100k with digital sales
Uncharted is at least 60k+ retail
Tales are >50k
Ragnarok probably too.

not sure if serious...

week 46 = revision? I really doubt it'd be this year.

I think it isn´t impossible but I think there is no need to (this year) and there´ll be the WiiU release Nintendo should take care of anyway.

What promising software's coming after that? The biggest releases coming up are Persona 4 Golden, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Battle Destiny and Metal Gear Solid HD edition. Two of them are semi-remakes and yet another Gundam game. Hardly best sellers.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
No, I reckon 3DS is selling still decently, and a redesign announcement could result in some backlash.

DS was pretty much outsold when they announced the Lite - i think they should put out better hardware as soon as possible - especially for the western market many gamers are still on the fence. This way early adopters and hardcore gamer would probably upgrade and give their standard 3DS consoles away, which should result in even more street pass and social awareness.

I expect the 3DS redesign to be positioned as an 20K Yen - premium edition like the DSi and not as replacement for the actual entry unit.

Hot Shots gold is above 100k retail / which is the minimum it had to sell since it's from a series that never went below 400k, and PSP version did at least 290k copies. This 6th entry did less than the PSP Best Versions, so a pretty bad result.
Gravity Daze is close to 100k with digital sales / which is a nice result... per se.
Uncharted is at least 60k+ retail / which is not so great for a game that had to show the capabilities of the console.
Tales are >50k / which is one of the worse result in the series. Tales of the Abyss almost doubled it, on a Nintendo platform, and a straight port.
Ragnarok probably too. / nice result, indeed. But Vita does not need only nice results.

Bold.
The overall situation is pretty depressing. Just look at the games sales during the period on PSP, or just 3DS, which did not have a great debut as well (though better).
Vita does not need games that barely can reach the 70k mark. And the near future does not look promising since the most interesting games are in June, and sales wise are not so strong.

just re tales and uncharted. You can't expect uncharted to sell great in Japan. U3 sold only around 150 000 if I remember correctly.

Also re tales, on 3DS (released around this time, so with a larger user base) abyss did around 70 000, so not so far from innocence.

I miss the times when you needed to sell >300k units of a low budget DS game because if it didn´t it obviously was a flop. lol

Sorry, if you need to highlight games starting with >50k sales the situation probably isn´t that healthy and explains the lack of serious 3rd party comitment.

There really isn't a way to spin Vita's software sales as anything other than a crushing disappointment credibly.

The Japanese are neither buying the console nor its software.

the fact that there are only about 600 000 Vita's in Japan makes software sales of 100 000 very good. That's like saying PS3's software isn't selling in Japan when out of the install base of 7 million only 800 000 copies of FF XIII-2 were sold last year, which was PS3's highest seller.

Uncharted 3 did more than 164k, but that's not the point. Golden Abyss was one of the strongest titles in Vita line-up, and we have seen that Japanese video gamers don't have many problems to buy Western games if that's the case; on PS3, they did bought Resistance (134k) and it was even a new IP.

As for Tales, on 3DS Abyss performed a lot better; but the problem is not the comparison, it's the fact that Tales of did nothing by itself to bring consumers to the console. Such results are not so bad in Vita ecosystem, but Vita ecosystem is struggling, imo.

I agree with your sentiment re the ecosystem. Vita needs a defining game, pitty the japanese didn't enjoy GR as much as they probably should have based on the quality of the title that we've seen. But 3DS, ecosystem wise, was at the exact same position this time last year till price cut and MH announcement. True that sales numbers were better, but I'm just talking about looking for that one game to bring people flocking to your system.

No one cares about attach rates, least of which the companies actually releasing their games to comparitively middling sales.

...with the difference that people knew Mario Kart, Mario Land, Zelda, Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest were coming.

Clearly, Vita hardware sales are bad, and this is reflected in games sales.

Well we know AC, COD, Bioshock, FF X HD, Killzone are coming as well.

None of those will have the same effect as an Original Mario/Mario Kart game though. We still don't know what AC and CoD are (port or original game? If they're port they aren't going to help much). FF X HD is on PS3 and Killzone was never a big series.

Strictly speaking about Japan, only FF X HD matters and as I said, it's on PS3 too so its effect on Vita will minor at best.

How many of those will actually have a significant boost on sales like Mario Kart or Dragon Quest?

Also, I really wouldn't count on Bioshock...

A true DQ game isn't even on 3DS. In fact DQ comes out usually to the end of the console's life.

Exactly one of those may attract Japanese gamers, but it's on PS3 as well.

Sony could ask Square to delay the PS3 version and have it Vita exclusive for like 6 months.

Bioshock will have a huge impact in the west. Anyone doubting the game should really read Kevin Levine interviews. AC could pull a Lost Legacy, true.
As for CoD as I've said many times before Kotick was at the NGP unveiling, promoting the game as the one true game that will define Vita. With CoD's sales evening out between Ps3 and Xbox 360 maybe Sony has managed to sign some activision deal the same way MS did (which is expiring this year btw). Also a CoD on the go, with the ability to play cross platform between PS3 and Vita would be an instant seller in the West.

And just why would square delay the version that will actually sell?

A new mainline DQ for a handheld is probably years away. At the very lest they are releasing a potential million seller with DQMonsters in a few months.

HSG PSP took a long time to get to 290k, and the sequel barely broke 100k IIRC, on a much bigger userbase. The series just didn't do great on hanhelds (there was that 1.5 release with GPS that bombed completely too).

Anyway how about comparison to PS3 launch window?
Eg. GravityDaze has similarly obscure branding to Folklore, and it did MUCH better, in a much more crowded lineup to boot (I think userbase was bigger for Folklore too, but not dramatically so).

Hard to make a game to game comparison in many cases, but total software sales after 14 weeks, at least for what we have recorded, were 703,791 for the PS3 and 477,412 for the PSV. Can't remember whether Famitsu provided more weekly sales figures back then or not, which would have a bearing on the software totals.

The hardware LTD is pretty similar at that point too, with 657,872 for the PS3 and 608,784 for the Vita.

Sales-Age Genius
HSG PSP took a long time to get to 290k, and the sequel barely broke 100k IIRC, on a much bigger userbase. The series just didn't do great on hanhelds (there was that 1.5 release with GPS that bombed completely too).

You don't RC.

That was fast from geimin.

Sony Bundles 4GB Memory Card With PlayStation Vita
Sony is sweetening the deal on its ¥2,000 PlayStation Vita discount campaign. A retailer is reporting that the campaign, which was originally scheduled to end at the end of March has been extended. Additionally, Sony will be throwing in a free 4 gigabyte memory card.

The fine print remains the same. The deal applies only to those who buy a 3G model and at least one game. Meet these conditions, and you'll get ¥2,000 off and a free 4 Gig card at point of sale.

Sony never made official announcement of the original ¥2,000 promotion, but it was put in place at numerous retailers large and small.

imho this could be a crucial move, and result in a hardware boost. it's nowhere as radical as a 70$ pricecut, but it's a step in the right direction nonetheless.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Always kinda impressive to see how much budget re-releases sell in the long run. Demon's Souls seems especially crazy.

I hope Nintendo understands this and will be much more open to Budget Re-Releases. At least, repeating the Minna no initiative and improving it. Minna no re-releases have been highly successful considering the games which have been selected.
