That's kinda unavoidable unless Nintendo were to start refreshing their products at the same rate as phones or something.

Gimmicks give consumers a reason to buy your product over the consumer so there has to be something, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was OS related this time around.
I know this is a Japanese sales thread but look at PS4 worldwide. No gimmicks at all, just a pure gamers machine with easy to develop environment, pleased devs, software support, sensible price and it's dominating the market and smashing every console sales history record there is.

In fact a similar analogy can be given with the 3DS. 3DS isn't selling because of the 3D. The consumers rejected that gimmick in the first 6 months of 3DS's life. But given all the content that Nintendo and the 3rd parties pumped out for the system and a sensible price and suddenly the 3DS had a new life.

If Nintendo makes a new handheld, there would be no doubt that it'll have something to do with their QoL platform.

Seeing as how Nintendo sees the handheld as something you carry around everyday, it could easily have a unified OS and UI with their QoL platform along with pedometer, gyroscopes and whatnot.

Basically when you move, you gain points that you can spend on in-game items as well as track stats for the QoL platform. That would fit with the whole entertainment=quality of life thing Nintendo seems to be going on.

wait..what!? isn't that "dead brand" over 40 millions ww? isn't that dead brand over 15 millions in Japan alone?

GAF really loves to over react to me...as for the third PS4 week (OMG it's dead, DEEAD!!!)

:\
Well I could certainly see it continuing for another generation, but the brand honestly seems to have hit a dead end. Dual screens have become pretty useless with the 3DS. I think Nintendo will come up with a new brand to integrate their QOL platform, new handheld, and maybe even their new console.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

People need to stop acting as if there is anything that Nintendo could do to stop the smartphone gaming market - nothing. They screwed up the 3DS launch and for the successor they need to have robust solid hardware at a affordable price - if they ever wanna see higher hardware sales in the west again, launching at more than 150USD/€ is a no no.

They need to get their own shit together, smartphone gaming wont go away or be less relevant but it wont matter as much if Nintendo stops playing games and deliver a unified platform which supports all kind of games - high-end, social, mobile, handheld, homeconsole etc. but it still being affordable. They can probably learn something from the Vita and its off shelves part.

Call it GameBoy. Get growth. Easy.
i don't think the best solutions are the simplest ones, but i think there's some mileage in the game boy name. nintendo essentially left it when it was still pretty popular. it didn't die out like the ds and wii names did. and nintendo's pretty good at leveraging nostalgia, like with the new super mario bros. games. for a lot of people, i think those were the first time they thought a mario game had come out in about 10-20 years.

it would be purely a marketing move, but they would also need to make it worthwhile. the virtual console would need to be well-stocked and advertised. and obviously whatever launch titles were out for the machine would need to be actually kinda good and appealing and not pilotwings with wii sports assets and a revived ds tech demo.

The PS4 has a few gimmicks to help it sell just like the Xbox One does that seems to help it move consoles over the PS4. Nintendo doesn't need to build the device around a gimmick but there needs to be something.

Going by the slides that seems to be a given in some capacity.

I think they could release something like the iPod at the same time as the QoL platform. Make it a cheap device with companion apps for the QoL, include casual handheld games (like Brain Age or even NintenDogs), cheap and F2P stuff (and VC?). Its stuff is compatible with 3DS succesor hardware (similar architecture). They could even go crazy and make a "phone" version though this wouldn't be as likely.

Right, I don't think there's anything they can do against smartphone gaming as a market force.

I do think they can at least make a device that feels modern, affordable, and pro-digital however. Having your platform feel antiquated can be pretty bad if someone is always carrying around a super modern system in their pocket to compare it to.

I agree. It needs to be an affordable machine, capable of playing games that don't look like they are generation behind the iPhone when it comes out, easy to develop for and have all the support of Japanese devs behind it (which shouldn't be difficult seeing that I doubt Sony will do a Vita 2). The two most important ones are price and game line-up.

Honestly I can't quite think of a gimmick for the PS4. Maybe the streaming, but both the Xbone and PS4 have that.

A handheld with microconsole variant to play on TV would be a good bet for Nintendo. Share resources. Every dollar spent on your handheld is a dollar spent on your console. Its the only way.

Things like that help when people are choosing between the PS4 and Xbox one since streaming is popular but the equipment can be expensive or difficult to get working right for some people. Off the top of my head I would consider things like the touchpad, the camera and VR when it hits gimmicks.

This is the major thing that I think Nintendo needs to realise, and why I keep harping on about industrial design all the god damn time.

These phones have changed people's standards for tech. What they think is worth a certain amount, what looks cool, what they expect out of a screen, what's acceptable to be seen using in public.

If your shit is cheaper than most phones, then you can get away with not looking like the iPhone 5 or HTC One. But you'd better look like something the modern market can understand and is happy to be seen with. Otherwise it's back to the 'kidz ghetto' with you, where you'll be dominated by hand-me-down phones anyway.

And I think most people would agree that the touchpad, the camera and VR have had nothing to do with the success of the PS4 and have not been advertised in any way as key parts of the PS4.

Sony's marketing from the very start was:
1. This is for the gamers (This is their actual slogan)
2. This is the most powerful box
3. This machine will have all the good 3rd party stuff, but better than before, because we paid attention to devs, and we love devs
4. Seriously, this box is for the gamers and no one else

That's the conversation Sony has had since reveal, that's the pitch they showed the world. No nonsense. And it's done gangbusters.

EDIT: Two in a row, sorry. Always expect a new post to beat me out.

I'm not saying those things are the reason why the PS4 is selling as well as it is, but I consider them gimmicks by definition.

Lol wut? The touchpad and camera are really not the reason why people are buying PS4's. Probably an insignificant amount of people get swayed by such trivial features like the ones you mentioned.

Main reasons are simple and in no particular order:
1) cheaper
2) more powerful
3) next gen
4) games

Oh and VR is not a gimmick by any means of the imagination. It by no means is detrimental to gameplay but only enhances your experience. That being said I don't know if its going to be as a big of a hit as some people here think it will be.

More importantly on the VR front, there is no one (or rather a very limited number of people) buying PS4 because they want to try VR in 2 years time/

This statement implies that you don't know what the word gimmick means but i may just be reading it wrong. Also, the three things I mentioned were shown off as ways to improve your experience with the PS4 so it wouldn't be crazy to think that people might be interested in them and last I checked the cameras were pretty much out of stock everywhere so there has to be something to it.

Which is why I said "VR when it hits". Also, there were some crazy people who bought a PS3 to play Versus XIII and TLG lol.

A gimmick is a unique selling point/ feature a device has. However this feature has very little significance and so its a special feature implemented for the sake of standing out and having a special feature.

By no means in VR a gimmick. Its has massive significance to the gaming medium.

Use your head please. People are not buying Ps4's for the camera's. They are buying camera's for their PS4's.

Where are you getting that from?

I consider the things the things the PS4 camera adds and is promised to add a selling point, but eh I'll concede that I guess.

You can't really count the camera in as a selling point for the ps4 for 2 important reasons: the competition also has one and, more importantly, camera is sold separately.

That depends, I think it will lead to deprecating certain types of gameplay - most people see VR as 1st person only gaming and it's a valid concern should that view take hold, mainstream gaming could be even more derivative then it is today.

With tax increase we should see price increases for older games too in theory too, right?
Yes. It's just a general 8% tax instead of 5% on the price at the moment of the sale.

The prices don't actually change. For instance, the 3DSLL price was 18000 yen and it will still be 18000 yen. We're just used to working with the post-tax number (18900) as if it were the price.

I'm still considering how I should change that on my database. Most places are storing both prices.

Why would accessories (camera, move, VR) be counted as main features/selling points for the console?

Sharing is definitely a selling point, but the touchpad? Really?
Because that's how it's different. The same games in prettier graphics generally is not how game platforms sell outside of their very core fanbases. There's some amount of uniqueness that comes from hardware and software gimmickry that helps define the niche and give an identity to the hardware. Although accessories don't count because they require that you owned the system in the first place.

Let's be honest people. What is inherently so bad about Nintendo making a cheap SMB app on iTunes and selling it for like $2 a pop?
SMB relies on precise controls and platforming. That's not something that works on mobile devices. If you just want a Mario endless runner then yeah sure.

What's strange is that Nintendo seemed to have a clear grasp on attractive, or at least inoffensive product design with their DS lineup. I'll never understand why they thought it was a good idea to go from this:

To this:

Hubris? In any case, the DS models look clean, simple and elegant. All of the 3DS look like something plucked straight out of the GBA days. I also have a feeling that their DS advertising was much more mature overall compared to the 3DS, but I don't have the time to look it up. Would be nice if someone else could do a quick comparison though. *wink*

Right, I don't think there's anything they can do against smartphone gaming as a market force.

I do think they can at least make a device that feels modern, affordable, and pro-digital however. Having your platform feel antiquated can be pretty bad if someone is always carrying around a super modern system in their pocket to compare it to.
I was saying this in the middle of all of the HOMG MOBILE KILLED NINTENDO argleblarg when the 3DS struggled out of the gate. The stories were all "iPhone ate up Nintendo's market it's obvious" when Nintendo brilliantly decided in the face of a disruptive mobile competitor that then was the time for MORE expensive hardware and software. There was nothing they could do about mobile, but they really didn't need to go from $130/$20-30 to $250/$35-40 hardware/software (using American price points in a MC thread to make a point, don't crucify me plz ;) ) to say nothing about the elegance points made above. The WiiU shares a lot of those experience failings, too.

I don't see any reason in the post. But he goes on and on about how he's happy he could sell the latest Miku game...

Anyway, end of an era.

If Japan had a big gaming retailer we would probably have heard about stores closing left and right. However it seems outside small hardcore shops such as Azalyn, the bulk of the consumption is through big electronic/department stores, which can just replace the disappearing game market with something else, I guess.

Sure but to those genres it has massive significance and its becuase those genres are so big it has large significance to gaming overall.

Do you consider motion gaming for Wii gimmick? how about 3D for PS3?
Motion control was not a gimmick. Motion controls actually effected our medium in a large way and had some function in how we played games. 3D depends on if it was held/advertised as a big system selling feature or not.

Stuff like the 3D on 3DS, dual touchpads on Vita and WiiU touchpad are gimmicks.

Next week there will be a new episode of Tôsôchû on TV so expect sales (Run- and Battle for Money) to jump after that, neverending cinderella story!

RIP Love Plus
Seems they didn't quite get past the ghosts of 2012's bug-riddled release.

You know I somehow doubt it, and if anything this is more evidence that people actually didn't yearn for a 4th edition of the same game. Because this is exactly what players would have wanted, the game that NLP should have been, the working enhanced everywhere now in 3D awesome girlfriend.
The people who complained about everything in NLP and picked up NLP+ love it.

I think Konami got a break with NLP because players wanted to see the girls with the better graphics, but essentially the LP franchise is a visual novel and selling the same game 4 times is like asking people to buy the same book 4 times, would you do it?

Yeah. Sure some/many players may just have stopped paying attention but the main reason would be story-fatigue imho.

I didn't really think of it that way, since I'm not totally cognizant of the content per game, but I can see that.

Also, Natural Doctrine releases soon.
Pretty jazzed to get my hands on this...though I'm not expecting a sales blockbuster.
This game looks ultra-niche.
