Ro-Kyu-Bu Vita is the third game in the series. I wonder how much these games costs for Kadokawa to keep bumping them like that.

Youkai Watch should pass Layton (launch aligned) this week:

It took PSP nearly 10 years to get there (in more favourable market conditions) and selling at a much faster rate than the Vita even before the MH phenom. 20 million is crazy high. Very few systems get there.
While there's no way Vita hits 20 million, I could see it having an extraordinarily long life, which might take it near 10 million.

If Nintendo announces their next handheld and it's not massively more powerful than the Vita (which is likely because Nintendo), there's a very good chance that they will share some multiplats. The Vita will already have a decent installed base by them compared to the fresh Nintendo handheld, which makes launching new games less risky. There probably won't be a new handheld from Sony due to the Vita's WW performance anyway, so there's nothing to worry about a successor killing off its legs either.

Basically, the Vita might live through 2 generations of Nintendo handhelds. Last year this would've sounded absurd but I don't think it's unlikely now, especially if Sony can drop the price further and maybe introduces some redesign down the line. They don't even have to do that much in terms of 1st party software output.

So, just wondering... is anyone here actually a fan of Youkai Watch, and follow the anime/played the game?

I've watched the first episode and finished the game. It's a fun, Pokemon-like RPG. The graphics are pretty, the monsters quirky, and the story/characters are engaging. My biggest complaints are;

a) battle system is too simple for my tastes. Almost everything the Youkai do in battle is auto-attack. You can unleash a special attack, once a meter is filled, by doing one of three or four micro-games on the touch screen. Most of the time, however, you'll be rotating the 6 members of your party around, healing them with items, and clearing 'curses' by doing one of three or four minigames on the touch screen.

b) Not enough of the Youkai evolve (either through level up or in combo with another Youkai/item), in my opinion. Plenty can, but there's a large proportion that can't and it's disappointing for some of them. Also, I felt too many Youkai, especially late game ones, are simply re-colors of earlier, lower rank Youkai,

c)"Capturing" Youkai in battle is feels entirely random. Unless it's a story event (and you can 'buy' them through an in-game gashapon machine, but that's random). There were occasions where I would have to battle the same type >30 times to get a particular one I wanted to join me. Also, I felt like the gashapon machine was the only source for too many Youkai.

But the game overall is pretty solid and I am definitely interested in the sequel.

What happened to Yokai watch? I remember a couple months ago people were like "Oh no another Level 5 new IP fail"

And then it suddenly spiked.

People who said it was a failed IP were shortsighted, it debuted higher than the original Inazuma Eleven and the anime took quite a long time to launch. Compared to most cross-media franchises it actually had a pretty decent launch.

I think the anime launching later is what made people skeptical of it.

Yodobashi Akihabara (the real shop, not the online one)

Youkai Watch - sold-out (i don't see it anywhere and no indications, so i presume it's out of stock)

PSV - 6 models out of 8 are out of stock
VitaTV - only DS bundle pack available
PS4 - camera bundle out of stock
3DS - all models are available
WiiU - you already know the answer

I think that Japanese people are not so silly. The mobile fact is there, we know it all but I except a regrowth of Sony-nintendo sales in 2-3 years.

Besides that, 3ds hardware may be low for some people but iI find it great for its 3y lifetime).
Forget all those people who bought the ds kawashitma game and those who bought only little puzzle-study'kanji games on ds which makes easily 5 millions and you see that there's not a lot of difference between ds.
The big llack is the exclusivity of dragon quest (Xi, ds had the 9th).
When you see other games as harvest moon or rune factory by example, sales of the ds games have same sales as the ds version.

I own the game, just pplayed it 1 hour. Before buying it, I can say that I like what Level 5 does with the Inazuma 11 games. The furiganas and not difficult Japanese permitted me to enhance a bit my Japanese (using as a dictionary) it's the same with youkai watch and every year level teams ameliorate the graphics ans there are more voice actings.
The game (as the ie games) goes parallely (and well) with the anime

No you're absolutely right. The difference has come from third party titles, of which you named less than first party.

But the 3DS is absolutely going to outsell the PSP which wouldn't fit with your agenda.

About Youkai Watch, I wouldn't be surprised if the mysterious new game (that was teased in the CoroCoro magazine a while ago) won't release before next year. I can see a Level-5 Vision reveal in late August (or TGS, in late september), with a Feb/March release, and the new anime starting in January or April.

I mean, Inazuma Eleven was an annualised franchise, and new games were generally announced in March (GO Galaxy was), yet, we still haven't heard anything about the new YW game.

Oh, and I think/hope we'll hear about Fantasy Life soon, I remember Level-5 being pretty happy with its sales. And it'd be cool if they talked about the console version of Wonder Flick ;)

Well. It's going to outsell it, but I think it's not going to end more than 1-2 millions ahead. I don't think the 3DS is going to sell >=25 millions.

Toukiden: Quiz Battle has been announced for iOS/Android: http://www.gamecity.ne.jp/toukiden/quizbattle/

I imagine they're going after the gigantic Quiz RPG audience.

What? I kinda want a Mitama TCG :( They were amazingly drawed

For license IP manga it's good. Most are throwaways and sell much lower. Also FYI that 100K was for it's first week. :)

Yeah that number seems pretty good to me. iirc Pokespe volumes usually do around 50k in their first week. Not sure about other Pokemon manga.

Vita could get to 20 million if a blockbuster title came out which everyone started copying similar to MH. Unfortunately I doubt it will happen.

PSP is at around 5.25 mil in Japan after 2.5 years on the market which is 2.5 mil more than what VITA has sold right now. Also, Monster Hunter 2 was released and went on to sell 1.8 mil on PSP. We have not seen that game yet.

Even if VITA gets a blockbuster hit like MH today, it won't reach 20 mil. That hit will need to be bigger than MH and VITA will need to stay on the market as long as PSP in Japan.

Heh, development costs are probably paper thin, considering even the latest Vita entry looks like this.

How does this thing work?

If it's like Quiz RPG, you're asked to select one of four question/element combos, and that question has four multiple choice answers.

If you select the right answer, everyone of that element attacks the monsters on screen (you can let them autotarget or target them yourselves). If you answer fast enough, they get an attack bonus.

The monsters attack every turn regardless of whether you got it right or not.

That's pretty much it for the core gameplay part. The rest is card collection that works like most social games.

This really illustrates just how much of a back seat that Sony's first party studios have taken. There was so much rage at Nintendo's first party output for the last two years, and Sony decided to emulate that strategy to the nth degree with little to no fan repercussions so far.

I actually don't think the question was about consumer acceptance, but rather Deep Down's ability to move hardware. Puzzle & Dragons Z was an expanded release of a game everyone played on devices they already owned. Will people buy a game console to play a F2P game? Maybe, if SCE and Capcom push it like SCE and SEGA did to PSO2 on Vita.

Actually DD being F2P should mean that everyone already owning a PS4 will install the game. They don't have a reason not to. And that is a great base for word of mouth.

Many people are probably considering buying a PS4 now, but there aren't enough games for it currently. If they need convincing there is something worthwhile on it, DD will be the game most often shown to them.

And Capcom's big budget titles, many of them graphical showcases like DD, have been very important to past systems' successes. Resident Evil made the PS the success it became in its early years and a viable choice for putting FFVII on it. (Namco kept Sega and the Saturn at bay but it was Capcom that really made the difference.)

DD being F2P, the fresh gameplay, the spectacular graphics, the biggest Capcom successes did new things and were pushing boundaries both in terms of gameplay and graphics. Many defined genres.

And everyone who buys a PS4, for DD or another game, will probably try and install DD too. I can't see this not having great legs and also giving its system great legs. It is easily the most important title for the PS4 in Japan this year.

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds kinda interesting, but those questions are random or related to the game?
