Media Create Sales: Week 13, 2011 (Mar 28 - Apr 3)

Chris - do you have the lowest week for software sales on record?

I'll just state the good news I see in this chart

Amagami for the type of game it is, shows nice legs(HAR HAR pun pun)

For a game that supposedly had no 2nd shipment till mid April, and had 96% sell through first week DQMJ2 did nicely.

I see PSP go is at 175K lifetime sales so Sony finally sold through their initial 150K shipment. Do we know how much shipment 2 is? Maybe 50K? Can the PSP Go hit the 200k mark? If it sells 350 a week it can be there in 18 months! Should we set 18 months as the bet line and do over/under? :D Holiday gives a little boost so 17 would make it more interesting!

3DS still falling by 10k units each week.
Starting from next week we should see what kind of stable sales it can achieve.
About Wii.......a price cut is definetly being planned sooner rather than later but I think even Nintendo hasn't high hopes, internally they must be thinking about a successor.
At this point I wonder what Square Enix is going to do, by the time DQX is out next year Wii won't have a healthy active user base.

Wii has been heading towards a 15M LTD for years now. Since at least 2009. A price cut and DQX will boost sales some, but the system is not going to have a reversal of fortunes. The market for home consoles seems to have shrunk a great deal this gen.

The 3DS needs software now. That increase in Nintendogs + Cats is somewhat encouraging.

If any of the first batch of titles was going to have legs, it was gonna be that one.

Not true, big games will sell. Dragon Quest X for Wii. At best it could be a dual release with Wii 2.

Something absurd like 1000 before the Slim launch.

Wii isn't getting there just yet.

Edit: beaten.

Big fall for PS3, Wii under 10k, and 3DS fail. I wouldn't be surprised if 3DS fell under DS family sales by the end of April. At least until some decent games come out for it.

They are going to keep DQX as Wii-exclusive title. DQ will activate whatever user base it launches to.

I don't think it is fair to compare numbers up to the release of the slim. It is obvious people were holding off buying a PS3 for the new model.

Wii will not get to 15 million LTD in Japan .
Right now it selling 10 000 -20 000 a week it would be lucky to sell 1.5 million this year.
It's LTD is 11.5 million no hope for that .

360 only console up from last week. Fuck yeah.
Huge drop for PSP, still supply constrained?
There's a small chance that the Wii-PS3 gap gets to be less than 5 million next week

Key software will help spike sales again but honestly outside of DQX which will give a short term bump I don't know what other Wii exclusives will boost hardware sales.

PS3 now has a steady release of software so it is maintaining average to above average sales. A price drop worldwide should do wonders for PS3. Has the console received a price drop yet in Japan?

DQX and Zelda released on a moribund platform is an anomaly, which leads me to think next Nintendo console will be backward compatible. People could buy a new console to play these in HD.

What was the lowest PS3 number before they announced the slim/stopped shipping new fat units? That would be a better comparison.

Also, regarding the size of the console market in Japan. Now that I think about it a little, the shrink this gen isn't going to be THAT great. It's just spread out more this time around. Instead of 22M PS2s and less than 5M for the other two consoles, we'll have ~15M Wiis and over 9-10M PS3s and 1.5M 360s.

At it's lowest the PS3 was doing some pretty lol numbers, 360 beat it for a few months if I recall correctly but since the Slim, numbers have not been too bad. Wii lifetime figures are still pretty darn good so more than anything it really shows just how badly it went for the Wii. At first the console did really well but things have gone downhill to say the least.

I wonder how much DQX will sell when all's said and done.

Also I wonder at what number 3DS sales will stabilize.

It's DQ, game would sell no matter what system that it is released on. They backed the train wreck a long time ago now and can't back away from it at this point, not the ideal situation but DQ X will sell millions.

Any idea what the peak gap was?

They could do that but it's not an ideal situation to release a game which usually sells 4m units in Japan on a console which is completely out of steam and which people have moved on from by the time the game is released.
They're leaving money on the table by not making the game multiplatform in this state of things.
That of course doesn't mean that for other reasons (previous deals, contracts) they won't follow the initial exclusive plan as you say.

For long time Media Create watchers, this quote really illustrates the shift in the console market since the Wii/PS3 first came on the market. The trains have switched!

The userbase isn't going to disappear you know? It isn't active now because compelling software isn't being developed/released, but lots of people still own the system and will likely use it when DQX is released. Remember DQVI (and IIIr) and VII released very, very late into the lifespan of their respective systems and it turned out perfectly OK.

A 2% increase? Could be non existant really, too minimal or just measurement margin of error, maybe if it were 5 or 10, but 2 is so low to be encouraging...and its still behind Layton which is still chugging.

Even a PS2 title is up there...
