while we are on the tales subject : was xillia selling 700.000 a fluke or something that will be repeated?

I don't see it happening again unless they have something crazy up their sleeves.

Why would you say that? Tales is absolutely a much more popular series than Persona, and by quite a lot too.

It would probably have to outsell ToV PS3 and be on of the best selling ports ever in the series to pull that off at this point.

They may go all out for the 20th anniversary title, like they did for Xillia. Now the question is wether the PS3 is still a viable platform/wether PS4 will be a viable platform by then.

Reselling it would probably require PS3 version level of added content though.

Because it's already released twice, and once on the PS3 where the main Tales fanbase already bought it. Abyss is also very popular and released only once before the 3DS version which only sold 130-140k. The sales for the Tales games on the Vita don't instill much confidence either, even if they're not that great.

P4G had the benefit of only releasing once, and the Vita version has a bunch of new stuff unlike a Vesperia port which would just be a straight port.

The Anniversary isn't until 2015 and we're probably going to get one more game before a 2015 title to celebrate it.

I've said in another thread that even a high quality remake of the best selling Tales game (Tales of Destiny) on PS2, while not a bomb, has been outsold by ports (TOS PS2, TOV PS3). There's nothing left and worth to remake.

Destiny's kind of weird. It was very well received by those who played it, the Phantasia remake sold well, the console ports put up decent numbers, and Destiny is (was) very, very popular.

I think interest in 2D Tales games and their typical design aspects (like random encounters) may have begun to decline. Especially coming after a 3D game like Abyss. None of the 2D games since have sold any notable numbers regardless of quality, but various types of 3D Tales games have. It's kind of similar to how Persona has now overshadowed the mainline SMT series.

I think if they were to do a high quality 3D remake of say, Eternia, it would sell pretty well comparatively. Maybe somewhere near Vesperia and Xillia 2's numbers.

As expected.

So of in terms of third-party franchises we have so far:

Group A. On the system:-
  • Monster Hunter (port)
  • Dragon Quest (port)
  • Ninja Gaiden (port)
  • Resident Evil (non-mainline, port)
  • Sonic Racing
  • Tekken Tag (port)
  • Some Tecmo-Koei Musou games

Group B. Not on the system:-
  • Final Fantasy
  • Ryu ga Gotoku
  • Tales of
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Winning Eleven
  • Dark Souls
  • Dragon's Dogma
  • Sengoku Basara
  • Resident Evil (mainline)
  • Kingdom Hearts (non-mainline, port)
  • Some Tecmo-Koei Musou games

Group C. Not on any home console since PS2:-
  • Kingdom Hearts (mainline)
  • Persona

(Accurate? Anything missing? Anything need more context?)

Don't understand why they don't just port Vesperia to Vita. I realise it would be a significantly higher cost production but would also likely sell on par with P4. They're heavily diluting the brand by cheaply remaking all these critically panned games.
Is there a Vesperia anime airing right now? Live stages? No?

I think interest in 2D Tales games and their typical design aspects (like random encounters) may have begun to decline. Especially coming after a 3D game like Abyss. None of the 2D games since have sold any notable numbers regardless of quality, but various types of 3D Tales games have. It's kind of similar to how Persona has now overshadowed the mainline SMT series.

Innocence R and Hearts R had random encounters even though the originals they base on didn't.

There hasn't been a single original 2D Tales game on console after Abyss, Rebirth was the last one. Destiny R is highly regarded, but "only" a remake, Hearts was on DS after two failed outsourced takes on the system, NDX was at the tail end of a system that only got ports and spin off up to that point, additionally watered down by being bundled with the x-th portmake of Phantasia.

2D Tales is dead, and they did it on purpose. 3D costume DLC is where all the Tales money is nowadays, regardless of the game's sales.

After Tales of Graces bombed so hard (it barely sold 300 more units than the cheap spin-off Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World), it's understandable that they are very weary of putting another Tales of title on a Nintendo home console. They got burned pretty bad.

DotNW shits all over Graces F too. That sucks :/

A healthy line-up for sure. I want to see what LBX Wars is like, hope that will be shown soon.

Also, we are very low on AAA games for 3DS, aside from SMTIV, MH4, and AA5, what else is there?

For a platform that's really successful for 3rd-parties, nothing that major's been announced for a while, I mean SMTIV was announced last June! I forget when AA5 was announced.

This is where a FF game (remake or port of a AAA game like Type-0 would suffice), or a Tales game, Phantasy Star from Sega, whatever should be announced by now.

Don't Tales games get unveiled in Jump around this time anymore? Remember when Graces Wii was named, Innocence was unveiled and such in April (or so) 2009?

Just get Alfa System, or hell give Dimps a second chance on a 3DS Tales, Dimps deserves another shot, they're a great dev.

Or maybe get another team for a fresh shot, Tri-Cresendo anyone? Should be currently working on Digimon World Re:Digitize 3DS.

For SE as said get working on a port of Type-0, or get Matrix on the FF5 remake, or finally start that remake of Before Crisis (hand should do this ala Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded). Bravely Default 2 would suffice but I want FF.

Sega should get Phantasy Star Portable 3 of sorts on 3DS, maybe get a Shining game (not the PSP games, maybe get Neverland on one), or something big from their other backlog.

MarvelousAOL is WAY overdue to announce Dragon Marked For Death, Rune Factory 5 needs to be announced at any point, I personally vote for a Grand Knights History port, it shouldn't require much of a downgrade from PSP, and it would get it in NA.

Point is, where's the beef?

Basically, port the entire PSP library to 3DS.

You know something about Umihara Kawase? I feel like it's the only game that might struggle to hit 50k. Disney could go the AK47+Me route too.

Monster Hunter 4 will probably be dated on April 27/28, I'm betting on an early August release. http://www.capcom.co.jp/game/event/nico2/

Err, I'm guessing they'll get DKCR 3D during that time too. Mario Golf might make an appearance as well. Why is the summer so packed for the 3DS anyways?

September for Mario & Luigi then?

I only really suggested two (Type-0 and GKH), but some ports would really work well I think, and we're seeing some (LBX series, Digimon), I don't get why the larger ones have not been attempted, is optimization that difficult between the two?

I mean, it doesn't help as I said that we're not even seeing original entries in AAA franchises as much as we should be seeing, so the next best option? Ports, especially those of games that never got localized.

Grand Knight's History would be better served on Vita. Vanillaware's already got two games on the platform, one of which is out and selling pretty well for itself. That game also has a heavy online component, which if tweaked would work better on Vita as well.

Things like Phantasy Star and Tales of are not really expected, we are only missing Final Fantasy V.

Square might be working on it, same for BD2, DQXI and TWEWY2. Guess we have to wait. (did any of you ask for KH3D or TFF, waste of resource)

They certainly seem to have a good relationship with Sony. I wouldn't say they're doing exceptionally well on the Vita, but good enough that I think GKH would do okay.

omg Grand Knights History

Marvelous pls, port that shit to anything. Vita, 3DS, whatever, JUST DO IT

Where's Kuma Tomo?! Guess the bear won't be your best friend then?!

Joking aside, I need a job post-graduation! Awesome looking line-up!

So wait is it likely for the PS3 to get another Tales game this year in Japan?

I am glad Marvelous AQL is doing well on Vita. It bodes well for future support.

Almost every game Marvelous has released on the 3DS has sold very well so I don't get why they don't have more coming besides Kaio(and the eventually HM and RF games obviously).

Only Hero of Legend expects Dragon Marked For Vaporware to be released.

Are you waiting for KAIO too? :p

That one might be released if Gyrozetter/Youkai Watch/Gaist Crusher overperform. Marvelous will probably try to jump on the 3DS cross-media bandwagon.

At least we've actually seen screens of the game not too long ago. The anime's coming this year, no?

I'm guessing Senran Kagura's gonna make another appearance on the 3DS as well. Harvest Moon and Rune Factory had the best selling entries ever in their series on the 3DS. :p

The ones that sold well on 3DS will get sequels, obviously. They just branched out a bit with Vita support and that also paid off well.

There was a DS Harvest Moon that sold 300k+

How long have you been waiting?

Also yeah Marvelous has been doing well on all platforms recently. Great to see it.

[3DS] Senran Kagura - 52.206 / 85.229
[3DS] Senran Kagura Burst - 62.408 / 93.859
[PSV] Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus - 94.324 / 118.364

[WII] Muramasa (Everbody's Selection) - 7703 / 42.808
[PSV] Muaramasa Rebirth - 45.660 / 56.795

+ all dat DLC money (Both games have a bunch of DLC)

They've been fairly smart with what they're put on Vita. Stuff like Harvest Moon, and Rune Factory wouldn't work. The only one of their Vita games that could do poorly is Valhalla Knights 3, and I'd say that's because the game looks like poop.

Since 2010, when Atlus released a list of potential 3DS games: http://www.ign.com/articles/2010/06/15/e3-2010-big-list-of-3ds-games

Etrian Odyssey
Shin Megami Tensei
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona

Will you be laughing months from now? *giggles*

(laughs)

Atlus is probably Nintendo's biggest third-party supporter right now, since they've been spewing games left and right on the 3DS. Perhaps they'll make another Radiant Historia, I'm sure that it'd do better on the 3DS than the original did on the DS. But I won't believe Persona's coming until I see it in my hands (or someone else's hands, I guess).

This is the gen to try and see if you could get Persona to work on a Nintendo handheld, none of the previous platforms were right for it and it's not like Atlus is resistant to porting P3 and P4...

What should those games be selling to be classified as "exceptionally well"? 100k for Muramasa, and 200k for Senran Kagura? Both had first weeks about as high as the LTD for the original releases on much more successful platforms. You can't really ask for more than that.

You have a rather odd definition/use for the word Exceptional
