Wii was outselling the PS3 by a HUGE margin before those games were released on PS3. The PS3 and Wii launched at the end of 2006, FFXIII launched at the end of 2009; 3 years of the Wii DESTROYING PS3 sales wise and they didn't switch consoles.

When FFXIII launched, Wii had outsold PS3 2:1 in Japan (9.4 vs 4.3 million IIRC).

What makes you think they will switch consoles now?
I didnt say it would switch consoles, but doing a cheap downport is a (although unlikely) possibility. Also, like i said, the PS3 had a large enough userbase at the time FF launched. Looking at the current tracking, do you really think the PS4 will have a UB of over 4 million by the time FF/DQ launch?

Someone needs to add "A steady lineup of good games" to this list

Okay, but now the next time we can cross something out is like Fall 2015.

The thing that I think everyone is missing here is a that once this drought is over PS4 will more than likely have a steady lineup of games......not just AAA big budget titles that everyone looks forward to saving the system.

Eh. PS4 is pretty much completely following PS3s steps. Sell like crap for couple of years then get big games and then grind the sales for that about 10 million. I don't see the sudden doom and gloom for it. Yes it won't be a new PS2 and its sales will be crappy for long time but it's no WiiU either.
I don't expect the PS4 to have a life long as the PS3.

PS3 had a very unusual long life, in its 7th year it even outsold the PS2 despite the price difference.

Code:
Media Create HW - Week 52

                        PS2 '07 PS3 '13

 YTD 772,178 849.590

 SRP ¥16,000 ¥24,980
PS3 2014 will be > PS2 2008 too probably (PS2 sold only 472,489 in 2008 according to media create).

To align launches completely ignores 2 incredibly crucial features that render this comparison moot. 1) Nintendo holiday release (where, historically, Nintendo recieves the greatest bump by far) and 2) Software lineup.

The next mainlin Yakuza, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dynasty Warriors, Tales of, Ys, Resident Evil, and Metal Gear Solid will all land on the PS4 and miss the WiiU. Half of those are already officially confirmed (for the PS4), and they're all still years away. And these are even coming from companies that are making ventures in mobile, but have expressed desire to continue making high profile releases to stay relevant.

It's no question that the support will come for the PS4. And what of the Wii U after Kart and Smash (which is arriving at least 3 months after the 3DS version)? Zelda is 2015? The outlook in Japan is terrible on all fronts, but it's pretty ridiculous to think that every single remaining high profile 3rd party Japanese title will inexplicably evaporate before they release.

It's sad how true this is.
Well, Ys is probably not coming to PS4 (VITA/PC likely), and the next big Dynasty Warriors is a WiiU exclusive (the Zelda one), and it wouldn't surprise anyone if there is a exclusive or timed exclusive Tales of game on WiiU IMO (Symphonia was on GCN after all, which sold phenomenally well, and Wii received Symphonia 2 and Graces...); so not all is said and done regarding Japan.

I expect PS4 to outsell the WiiU by the way, but I don't see it as a locked down thing, many things can happen.

It's a Japanese sales thread, however you can't ignore the worldwide element of franchisers with a global appeal. Even if you shut your ears and close your eyes, it's far too late for (at least) FFXV and KHIII to go onto WiiU. The ship has sailed a long time ago.
You appeared to be saying the success worldwide would help Japanese sales, which isn't necessarily the case (other than getting more western games). If you only meant that comment with regard to KH3/FFXV chances of coming to Wii U, then fine. As I said those are extremely unlikely at best regardless.

Maybe you should re-read the first two PS4 media create threads. I don't recall many people/anyone saying that the second coming of DS is upon us. If anything the bad attach rate on non bumdled software was not painting a promising outlook.
Notice I said that this is a mantra that has been emerging the past few weeks. I said nothing about weeks 1 and 2 for PS4. People were already concerned weeks 1 and 2, with the excuses already rolling out full force. And don't forget how raucous the laughter was when Wii U dropped below 20k then 15k not too long after launch. Everybody needs to keep perspective here.

Truthfully the PS4 doesnt need saving as Sony is used to these slow burner starts. Just that this time they kinda did it more to themselves than others with the huge lack of PS4 exclusive domestic titles with the launch window. And when I say exclusive I mean PS4 only, not cross platform which a lot of the other ones were.

I don't have much confidence that Nintendo will keep supporting the Wii U much longer after those titles are released, whereas the PS4 will keep chugging along for another 5 years.
Even so, in that scenario when does PS4 surpass Wii U LTD in Japan? Not soon. I'd be surprised by anything before 2016.

They are in Japan. Pretty much every XB1/PS4 game is treated as exclusive to PS4 in JP.

lol

Oh god people are now thinking KH3 is coming to WiiU lol.

This is going to be a great thread.
I don't think KH3 is coming to Wii U. If the possibility of FFXV coming is 0%, KH III is around 5%.

Who said something about rushing the next console ? I dont expect the 4DS to hit anytime before Fall 2015/Q1 2016, maybe even later - and the home console to follow a year later. So we are talking about 3 year for now - thats everything but "rushing" especially.

And the big difference is that not all PS3 type games run on Vita - why do you think Boarderlands looks like that on Vita ? Or we wont see GTA/RDR Open world games on Vita with the same graphical fidelity of PS360 titles ? Sony does all they can from a development tools standpoint - still there is a big difference in hardware power and architecture. With 4DS and Nintendos next home console you shouldnt have to worry about stuff.
Its better to have a base system and then up port to a higher powered system, than developing with stronger specs only to somehow dumb down the game for other platforms.

4DS - Base specs for the unified platforms and able to play the titles in 480p/qHD
Nintendo homeconsole/hub - Overclocked version of the SoC, runs every 4DS game at 1080, runs exclusive games as well, cheap

And whats wrong with a cheap console ? We have mobile SoC being able to run Unreal Engine 4 with most of it features.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMcscM_Hogc
The biggest reason is that PSV is considerably weaker than PS3. That´s quite obvious isn´t it? Running Unreal Engine 4 isn´t really saying much at all. Nintendos next handheld likely won´t launch at over 200$ after their experience with 3DS, also they have to consider the power consumption, so they ´ll chose their chipsets accordingly. Even in a very optimistic case, I think it will just be able to display WiiU graphics with lower resolution, at best with updated features.

Launching such a console in 3 years, would be really problematic because it would likely be less powerful than PS4 and at best slightly more powerful. Why exactly should the mainstream gamers consider replacing their systems in this scenario? The price wouldn´t be even that enticing because by then PS4 could be at 300$, with an established userbase and a mature library. In its 3rd year it also would have a further problem due to the upcoming next gen.

Instead they should concentrate in software development, that´s were the money actually is. I also wouldn´t take for granted that Nintendos next handheld will be an immediate success, that´s another reason sharing the target audience with WiiU for the first years would be more reasonable, than starting completely from scratch.

I would prefer another strategy, the next handheld as "WiiUs little brother" but also with their next system in mind in 2016/2017, by then WiiU may cost something like 200$ and could have a constant stream of cross-developed-titles this way, if it works out it could at least have a chance to justify keeping the console 1-2 years longer on market. In 2018/2019 a more traditional WiiU successor for 300$-400$, with a decent jump compared to PS4, but similar to PC or IOs the possibility to scale the older 4DS games, due to a more optimized architecture than WiiU-4DS.

Made by who though? Thats the distressing thing. When you get down to it, the Japanese console game third parties have been decimated. You only have to look at launch with things like no Ridge Racer or, I guess Katamari became quite a Namco hardware launch thing, no Tekken, no Virtua Fighter, and so on and so forth.

Sega is a ghost of its former self, Konami ever shrinking, Square can barely get anything out the door themselves anymore and who knows just what the fuck happened to the once totally on the ball Capcom. All eyes are going to be on TGS this year to see just how fucked consoles are in Japan really. Gonna have to be a bonanza of new announcements and projects geared to Japan to make a difference.

From who? Who are the developers going to make this steady lineup of games? They're all on mobile now making clones of whatever is the most popular F2P game is at the moment.

We even had the famous train thread on GAF.

Is it possible the PS4 goes below Wii U sales? And if so, how quick do you think FF and KH gets a Wii U version?
KH at the very least should already have a WiiU version considering that KH has been on just about everything at some point in the past. If KH3 can be on the XBO which will have a hard time to say the least in Japan not having a WiiU version is baffling.

Both are unlikely, although if PS4 starts tracking <10K it gets more possible.
Anyone have the sales ration of KH of FF of East v West?

Well Japan you had a good run. The spiral towards irrelevance as a market continues.
irrelevance in the home console market maybe.

Handhelds seem alright considering smart phones should have killed them long ago.

Pretty happy with those Vita numbers. If only the rest of the world could do their part.

Not that I'm completely rejecting the idea, but I don't think that's as much of a given as you think. Sure it happened with PS3 and somewhat with the Vita, but basically for games to migrate over there needs to be sales first usually. Again, it could pull a PS3, and frankly I at least expect it to pull a Vita-like "recovery" at some point in it's lifetime, but I don't think it's a given.

KH3 would be on PS3 as well if it was on WiiU. People have already forgotten that there exists a gap between PS4/Xbone/PC that requires another dev team to 'port down' to WiiU? Then of course that separate dev team for the porting is rewarded with terrible sales. Why bother?

I honestly completely forgot about Zelda Musou. That could actually be really really helpful to the WiiU since mosou games sell really well over there. But I was talking about strictly mainline, but thank you for reminding me of that.

As for Tales, while there is some history, the console games (minus Symphonia and Graces) have all missed a Nintendo home console, and I think Graces only being re-released on the PS3 confirmed that that's where the fanbase is currently stuck at.

And as for Ys, Falcom released this statement. I know it doesn't have to necessarily be Ys, but what other high profile RPG would they be talking about developing for the PS4:

The only thing stopping KH III on Wii U is the hardware capability. If it were in the same league as the other two, we wouldn't be having this discussion lol. Since the XBO fits the hardware bill, it's the only choice left in multiplatform plans.

If it does need completly remade from scratch that i would say its guarunteed to be a no go. If it can be ported with just scaling back a bunch of effects the chances rise (albeit slightly).

I agree a much better scenario was the wii/ps3 timeframe. But wasnt square in a much healthier position then?

Wow at PS4. Console gaming is dead in Japan.
It hasnt even started here yet. That and considering the fact not too many titles that screamed BUY ME NOW (PS4) also adds to this.

Multi-plat titles did not help as folks who already had the PS3 went basically, "why do I need a PS4 now?" even more so looking at what the future line up down the road is currently and seeing a blank sheet. Well asides from Western titles and that isnt exactly a system seller in that country.

As stated before this is going to be another slow burner starts. But at least the positive notion is this time unlike with the PS3 the PS4 is easier to develop for and Sony seems far more serious with providing support than in the past. We just will have to wait and see as the year goes on.

E3 would be one place for the big names in the Japanese industry to show off their domestically developed titles for the world market and the TGS is where smaller companies will show up. So would be far better to judge what sort of future might be in store after both shows pass.

DAT 3% tax increase!
I hope that Natural Doctrine sold well enough to warrant a cult following for the game.
Cult followings are created off of word of mouth and not sales. Generally places like the 2ch gaming boards and other small Japanese gaming blogs and such. Same thing happened with Demons Souls and why it literally went sold out everywhere after a few days when people figured out it was pretty awesome from the internet and rushed out to grab copies. That was an amusing phenomenon to watch first hand. This sure is not on the same level of popularity, but already Ive seen comments by folks that do enjoy the game for what it tries to do, despite all of its flaws and seems to be "slowly" growing. Though granted its not going to reach large levels as the game is just far too punishing and people dont really want to have to go through such lengths just to enjoy a title. Which I do not blame them in this society and how folks standard lives are filled with enough stress as is. Mainly the people who seem to enjoy such "mazoge-" titles are those from the Wizardry type of breed and such.

Releasing a Xbox One version is really cheap. And the X1 performs well in US. KH was really popular in the US so there is some logic there.

WiiU has a complete different architecture than PS4/X1 and it's a lot less powerful. They would probably have to make some compromises while developing the game for a fanbase that could not even exist. And If I remember correctly Square never released a KH game on a Nintendo homeconsole.

You forgot Phantasia, which was the first Tales game, and you have the Abyss 3DS port; so 4 mainline tales games on Nintendo consoles and a semi mainline sequel; not that bad IMO.

About Falcom, last generation they released 1 game on PS3; which came late on the lifespan of the system and was a late port; I don't know, I just don't see them as relevant in console sales.
If it does need completly remade from scratch that i would say its guarunteed to be a no go. If it can be ported with just scaling back a bunch of effects the chances rise (albeit slightly).

The difference in power and architecture, adding to the injury that probably the game is being developed as PS4 only, so using all the PS4 specific stuff, makes me think that a downport would indeed be a full remake. Someone with more technical knowledge will help us more in this subject, but the chances of a port are 0.

KH3 is for next gen consoles hardware wise. WiiU is not. Furthermore XB1 would have a larger install base than WiiU by quite some margin by the time it comes out. Basically WiiU has low userbase, low sales and is weaker.

Well, perhaps that suggests that console gaming hates Japan?

 SRP ¥16,000 ¥24,980
PS3 2014 will be > PS2 2008 too probably (PS2 sold only 472,489 in 2008 according to media create).
Well I don't see why PS4 couldn't repeat what PS3 did. It has pretty much exactly same kind of outlook currently. Well market contraction and mid sized devs continuing moving to mobile could change things I guess. Still I think it will have at least somewhat same kind of life as PS3 so at least 8 million ltd.

Japanese console market is really dead. Anecdotally, I have some friends who work in Japan and from them it seems like nobody really play video game anymore. Handheld gaming becomes very less visible in public. Console gaming is considered as Otaku's toys. Everyone just sticks with their phones and plays stupid LINE games. Japan need drastic change. A change that might not be applicable to the rest of the world.

That place there.
I can't avoid noticing that ... i mean, Vita was dead and all and doing 15 times less than 3ds weekly, and everyone was having fun and saying there would be no return.

And now, on a normal week with no special release, the Vita is really not that far from the 3ds in sales.

But especially, the 3ds is going down, while the vita is going up. There is a clear transition incoming and everyone seems to ignore it :)
I'm pulling the following out of my ass but I don't believe Vita is taking 3DS sales so much as there's an offset between the two.

Basically, with its current library and price, 3DS has peaked in its sales and it appears that most new releases appeal mostly to the current installed base. Note that even though it has peaked, it keeps steady sales. I'm not saying it's dying, just that 50k+ weeks need to be jumpstarted, they don't happen just because the system is there.

On the other hand, Vita is coming back from a bad bout of leprosy and after much struggling, it has hit a point where the combination of its price and library is more enticing than it used to be. A steady stream of solid, if not ground breaking, titles has helped a lot in establishing that library. It's not doing gangbusters but it's very much alive, just selling modestly.
The biggest risk for Vita IMO is that most titles address the same niche and once the console has exhausted that niche, I'm not too sure where it can go sales wise. That wouldn't affect software sales too much though.

Sure sony's 1st party is stronger than ever but how much of that is geared towards the Japanese market? The PS4 may be easier to develop for but i'm not sure that will mean that it gets better 3rd party support than the PS3. The PS3 was already essentially the go to place for 3rd parties and in general they were in a better place back then. I think a lot of people are assuming that after this early drought there will be a steady support of games but i'm not so sure that's going to happen.

The Japanese home console market is shrinking and is going to see less games in general than last gen. Devs are moving to smartphones and handhelds or just plain going out of business.

I think put it badly there. What I meant is that the game sold well enough from its cult following to warrant another game in the series. Much like Deception if I might said.

I think Falcom released the full Trails in the Sky trilogy is on PS3 in Japan. They were quite late in its life too though.
