It's behind the Wii U and Vita, but ahead of the PS3 right now. It's not going to cross streams with Wii U or Vita until at least the holidays (and I'm doubtful it will then)...PS3 on the other hand...

There's nothing wrong with thinking the PS4 will turn around and beat the Wii U, it probably will, but it's kind of amusing into how deluded you are into thinking it's a given.
wait what has that got to do with my post?

Apologist: a person who offers an argument in defense of something controversial.
"an enthusiastic apologist for fascism in the 1920s"

I mean, are there people who are unduly enthusiastic and actually believe the ps4 will be successful. I have not seen any Any Reason the Wii U *Wont* Dominate Japan threads for the ps4.
In the last few weeks and even in this thread there were and still are users making excuses, like the blame why PS4 sells this bad lies on the Japanese people. Downplaying at any occasion the Japanese videogame market in a Japanese sales thread, like "it´s no problem Japan doesn´t matter". And blaming 3rd parties instead of Sony for the lackluster lineup. In other words Sony isn´t responsible it´s always someone elses fault and there´s always a scapegoat. Sony even made "a great move by missing the holiday season"...

How much do you think Wii U will sell?
In Japan? It would be lucky to hit gamecube's 4 million, so I'd guess around 3.5-3.8 million total. I honestly just think the console market is dead in Japan and I've been saying this for a while now. I think the PS4 will go to around 3-8 million. That's not exactly a narrow margin, but I think it's difficult to tell where the PS4 will lie in terms of "complete disaster" to "marginally worse than it's predessecor." The fact that the PS4 has basically no shot at overtaking the Wii U (which is a disaster of a console), until at the very earliest late 2015, should speak volumes about it. Sony consoles peak later, but I don't expect that peak to be all that high.

Thanks!! Yep, Wii U is ahead of PS4 by a significant margin.

There's nothing wrong with thinking the PS4 will turn around and beat the Wii U, it probably will, but it's kind of amusing into how deluded you are into thinking it's a given.
The reality is that Wii U support essentially solely consists of Nintendo's output now, and that beyond platitudes there's been little to convince there's much investment in that area either. Justifiably considering how poorly it has sold.

Conversely, the only place realistically that the Japanese publishers can transition if they want to maintain a home console presence is the PS4. And they will have to transition eventually, PS3 software isn't going to sell in perpetuity. Where is Tales going? Where is Street Fighter? Where are musou games going to go?

It's not particularly unwarranted to think that in terms of longer term life cycle prospects the PS4 is much better positioned than the Wii U despite the current situation.

Of course, there's the possibility that Japanese publishers transition entirely to mobile and handheld. But I think that's unlikely, at least for any that want to maintain a Western presence as well. And even for those that don't, some titles simply don't translate as well to handheld/mobile.

Well this is a given unless you mean YTD than that will be a very close battle.
Yes I meant YTD sorry. I actually don't think it will be very close. I see absolutely nothing on PS4 in 2014 appealing to the Japanese market. E3 won't be Japan focused and TGS is dead. Holiday 2014 is Nintendo's as usual.

According to GAF:

Wii U releases with barren launch, Wii U sucks, Nintendo sucks.
PS4 releases with barren launch, don't worry, we can't judge yet, everyone just wait for the games to come.

MK8 can push the Wii U a bit along with other games, X? B2? Zelda? then smash during winter. I can see the Wii U staying ahead of the ps4 by a lot.
Yay I loved playing the GAF strawman game!

The Wii U is still very far behind the PS4 YTD. MK will give it a boost, and so will the holidays,

I remember plenty of people giving it the 'wait for...' with the Wii U, and plenty of people that thought the PS4 would struggle before it launched. 'GAF said' is rarely accurate.

FWIW, I personally think the Wii U has a good chance to stay ahead of the PS4 in Japan, but that it'll be a drop in the global ocean of little consequence.

E3 might not be Japan focused, but the larger Japanese pubs know that they need to bring their products there to show to the larger western markets, which ties back to the Japanese markets seeing stuff announced before their own TGS in September.

In other words Sony isn´t responsible.
Lol this entire post is ridiculous. Whether you like it or not, the blame for Wii U and PS4 having terrible sales. lies on the Japanese and the overall migration from. consoles to handhelds and mobile. The reason that this does not affect the PS4 in the long run is the fact that the PS4 is selling gangbusters elsewhere in the world making Japan irrelevant saleswise for the time being. This persecution complex shit really needs to stop.

Apart from western 3rd party support, I can also see the Wii U and its lineup in a better position than PS4 in Japan.

X, MK8 and SSB are big releases. Add 1 or 2 unaannounced games, some opportunistic cool indie games, Zelda Musou and you got a good chance, specially in the Holiday.

After seeing this results I wonder what Japanese 3rd party thinks. It is not easy for them, I guess smartphones, Vita and 3DS, plus PS3 and hopefully Wii U could squeeze in there if they shift some consoles with MK8.

The reality is that Wii U support essentially solely consists of Nintendo's output now, and that beyond platitudes there's been

Conversely, the only place realistically that the Japanese publishers can transition if they want to maintain a home console presence is the PS4. And they will have to transition eventually, PS3 software isn't going to sell in perpetuity.

The question is if they want or need home console presence at all. A lot of the PS3 games that were steady flowing games that helped PS3 along its way in Japan, got most of their sales (or at least a huge chunk of them in Japan.) The series that appealed to the west too will get the PS4 some sort of recognition (Resi Evil, MGS, FF, KH), but they're essentially viable because western PS4 sales are healthy enough.

All the "mid tier" devs are, as of right now, split between 4 platforms that are much more viable to develop for due to lower costs and higher install base (3DS, Vita, Phones, PS3.) The question is, will the big names of MGS, RE, FF attract these mid-tier devs to PS4? The PS3 was in a very different ecosystem in Japan where alternatives were sparse, but now that handhelds are much more capable and phones are more viable, I really don't think it's a given they'll just jump over. Some of them will, and I think a lot of them very will could, but again it's not something I'd put money on.

wait what has that got to do with my post?

I'm talking about the WiiU chalkboard lol
Fair enough. I just assumed your "it's over" was in reference to the Wii U vs. PS4 part of quote. Sorry about that.

"Who cares because Japan is a small drop in the bucket for the 3rd parties still on consoles"

Btw X is not a big release. The Wii U is only in a better position in Japan because the 3rd parties haven't announced their games for PS4. If they were going to make Wii U games, why wouldn't they have already done so?

Why are people suddenly expecting X to be some kind of huge seller? Xenoblade did under 200k in Japan.

Like others said, Xenoblade got very good word of mouth and it was a new IP. More people are aware of X than Xenoblade when that came out.

It is bigger than we think but I will agree with you that it is not in the same level as MK8 and SSB.

Yeah, that's how I see it. Much as it's frowned upon to expand the conversation beyond Japan in these threads, this is a special case. The Wii U has bombed everywhere. The PS4 has bombed in Japan, and broken sales records everywhere else. They're not really in the same boat.

And? We've seen what previously established franchises do on Wii U. When Pikmin 3 won't break 300k, and Donkey Kong is going struggle to reach 150k before bundling, what exactly is X going to do? X is not Xenoblade 2. I can buy that maybe it could possibly sell more than Xenoblade, but it is not a big release unless you mean setting it to Wii U's terrible standards.

It is not ridiculous, it is the truth, and the truth hurts!

Call it what you want (Japan), irrelelvant market, I dont care, I did not know Wii U was outselling PS4 when aligned by that much.

Wii U wins in something!! hooray!! Wii U GAF lets celebrate, lol!!!

I do beleive that Wii U has a chance to at least do a bit better in Japan, it will have good releases.

In other words Sony isn´t responsible it´s always someones elses fault and there´s always a scapegoat. Sony even made "a great move missing the holiday season"...
Strategically it was better to have more units available in other launch territories. There is nothing apologetic about a wholly justified, objective observation of that reality. It was a bad move for the Japanese market, but a good move holistically.

That there are insufficient titles for the PS4 that appeal to the Japanese market falls on Sony, first and foremost. But as with the PS3 transition, I have little doubt that Japanese publishers are less prepared than their Western equivalents. There's also simply less incentive to transition, since the decline of the PS3 hasn't been as precipitous.

As for why it's relatively easy to discern that there's something in particular that's different about the PS4's sales in Japan and everywhere else, it's quite obvious in the sales data. It's selling well everywhere else, and not so much in Japan. Something that can't be said for the Wii U, which garners more than a third of its sales from the Japanese market, at last check.

PS4's release schedule and exclusive line-up outside of Japan, while better, is still terrible. But it's selling on technology and promise.

Something it can't do in Japan, where the market is quite satisfied with handheld graphics on small screens and where Drakengard 3 can release on consoles in late 2013 looking like a PS2 game and sell 115K. That isn't blame, it's explanation. Different markets. Differing tastes and needs. Sony have put out a product that doesn't meet the needs of the Japanese market well at this stage.

The system is already getting the Xbox treatment = pushed off into corners. Not too many devs seem to be on board with it either at this point in time after what happened with the Wii. The WiiUs upcoming software lineup is quite bare too currently. The question is with how far out the upcoming "good" releases are dont think its going to matter much.

The lack of a bump last week to PS4 is worse to me than the drop this week. Everyone expected a big drop because of tax. We didn't get the bump we expected though. Demand is weak, and will likely stay so until major releases spur sales.

Hey - at least the PS4 is tracking ahead of the Gamecube...

...for now

The PS4 is tracking well behind Wii U and really doesn't have a chance of changing that trend any time soon. In fact, Mario Kart 8 is definitely going to reverse their positions for a bit too. Now those will be some entertaining Media Create threads.

The serious and aggravating part about this info is Japan console market.

The almost 2 year old console with titles on the horizon beating out the 2 month old console with no games at launch. Yes that'll be some wild threads!

Yep, not sure why people think X will be a big seller. Even the titles like Pikmin 3, W101, SM3DW, and DKTF couldn't do much to save WiiU.
I'm not expecting to do anything amazing, but I do expect it to sell more than Xenoblade, even considering the difference in user base.

The difference between this and the games mentioned, is that this game is made especially for japanese tastes, and it's gathering much more attention than the first game.

Salt!
Also, whose fault is it to release a console almost 2 years later with no games?

According to GAF:

Wii U releases with barren launch, Wii U sucks, Nintendo sucks.
PS4 releases with barren launch, don't worry, we can't judge yet, everyone just wait for the games to come.

MK8 & Smash is guaranteed to move some units. Zelda Musou and Bayo 2 is guaranteed to underperform. X is still up in the air.

Absolutely. Just look at the amount of salt in this thread alone. You're adding some nice contributions yourself!

At that moment, the Wii U will be tracking ahead of the PS4 not only launch aligned, but on a weekly basis, and trending towards a YTD basis. There's a contingent of posters in these threads that can't handle the thought of that happening. So yes - those will be entertaining for sure.

The Wii U should realistically be outselling the PS4 worldwide, like you've implied that it should be, but obviously it's not. The downfall of the Japan market and the downplaying of it's significance is certainly an interesting thing to watch unfold.

That's the thing. Everyone is back and forth about WiiU and PS4. The Japanese market in general is the much bigger problem. It's dropping, and there's no end in sight. People hoped the WiiU would kickstart it, then people hoped the PS4 would do the trick, but it's like throwing water balloons against a brick wall. And the personal Japanese anecdotes are anything but encouraging.

I hate sounding alarmist (even though it's clearly not a new trend), but shit. Is there really nothing that can be done to stop the conversion to mobile? (And the mobile threat is why I believe Nintendo is launching Smash on the 3DS first, but that's a completely different topic for a different thread).

I'm very curious how KH3 and FFXV will do at recouping development costs, particularly XV given how long it's been gestating. Didn't they say that there were no plans for XV-2? That seems crazy to me.
If the Osaka team are the guys behind KH3, they probably started development after they finished KH:DDD. That game wasn't in development hell and they could (should) have it ready for 2016 (4 years development cycle).

FFXV... get ready for the milking. They're going to do everything they can to make it profitable.

Or next week. Depends on the tracker.

Weeks to go under 10k:

Wii U: 12
Dreamcast: 16
Vita: 17

PS4 is 6 weeks old.
Well, I think all of them launched on holidays. So it isn't a fair comparision.

At this point, is going to be under 10k before its 10th week on the market. I can't remember anything on its release schedule after FF XIV.

I thought Zelda Musou would sell alot in Japan especially if they change up the formular a little along with the Zelda lore. Add some popular characters and they can have a seller on thier hands.

I am not sure how Bayonetta was received in japan but Bayo 2 it looks so freaking good.

Zelda isnt exactly as popular here as it is in the West.
