Forget waiting for E3, Sony needs to have a PS4 heaven.

Also, we haven't had a Vita heaven for a long time either.

This launch boggles my mind in general. Sony should have ensured that there are a few more games on PS4 for the Japanese launch, that appeal to Japan. I guess their plan was to secure the West first and then worry about Japan later. How much later is later though.
I think the japanese developers just got too conservative with generational changes and probably lack in the technical and organizational department. They had problems at the start of the last generation and it took a while until we saw something worthwhile from the average developer. Look how they also sticked to the PSP, just now the Vita announcements are picking up (the delay was corroborated by the weak sales). The same is happening all over again with the PS4. We still get nice PS3 annoucnements and fairly nothing for the PS4.

I think it's also a problem that to get a game ready for launch, they pretty much have to start developing it on PC with only vague target specs to work from. With few Japanese devs having much experience or interest in that platform, it's likely that even those interested in working on the platform waited until the final hardware was available before getting started.

I might have asked you before, but it'd be awesome if you could tell us about the more funny parts when the game arrives.

Its still too early to predict anything at this point. Do that after E3 / TGS.
I don't see a big Japanese presence at E3, and TGS is kinda shit too...

Many announcements will just happen randomly. And probably not this year.

Will do. Am sure it will be filled with all sorts of wonderfully hilarious and fucked up shit. Cant wait.

Its not a big presence its the presence of the larger companies which is whats important. Them knowing the west is their market its why most likely they will announce stuff there over TGS unless its a Japan centric title. Granted the TGS in the past have been on a shit slide downwards, am curious to see how it will be this year with the PS4 also if Sony in Japan is also really trying to work with indie devs here also. As there is a large pool of them, the question is has Sony actually reached out to them or not. Besides the titles from the smaller companies and such.

lol here's hoping you don't have a bad work schedule and get to enjoy all the yandere abuse :p
Its all about Dat Sayuri

So the PS4 has crossed 500,000 in Japan.

I wonder how long until Sony give us an updated worldwide sales figure.

I'm very interested to see inFamous and MGS' effect on sales.

PS4 doesn't need that to be successful. Its breaking records in the West. I doubt Sony care much either or even consider the situation bad in Japan due to its significance compared to the West in terms of sales.

As I've said before. It really is up to third parties to decide how well the PS4 does.

Although this may be line with expectations.

The Namco president iirc predicted between 300-500k for PS4 in March and PS4 nearly met the upper bound. It may be a possibility with such a low prediction that they expect the Ps4 to have a slow initial year.

My guess is due to the tax hike, we will see these numbers for awhile until there are big releases, which I see none of for awhile..

At this point it's likely both Sony and MS are saving certain sales announcements until at least April 17th when March NPD releases

They may also be waiting until certain earnings reports as I believe MS has some quite soon, not sure on Sony

Personally I disagree. While the management of Playstation may have changed over the years I do feel it's likely some of the executives see it as a failure if they don't sell in Japan. From a business perspective Japan may be irrelevant in many ways, but from a personal morale perspective it's probably disappointing

If anything Vita sales would be going up slightly with all of the new titles coming out. Am curious if the updated SAO game will move more units at the end of the month as that one will include some sort of multiplayer mode also. Plus if it was like how the PSP one sold really well will be interesting to see how it does considering the Vita one looks like a much more refined / complete version.

Also in 2 months time Freedom Wars will be coming out too at the end of June.

PS4 will be kinda quiet for a while till newer titles are actually announced. Since whats on the table currently is not all that enticing apparently and dont really blame folks either. People in the industry that Ive talked to basically say that they are waiting to see what else comes out and there is no real rush to buy one when there is not anything particular now that they want to play or in the future. As mentioned too other titles due to being multi-plat just allowed them to get the PS3 version instead, which they seemed perfectly fine with.

One other good thing is that with the PSP also winding down all of those devs will be slowly migrating over to the PSV. Seeing that things are picking up will help promote that notion. Also companies are already taking advantage of the useful features such as the cross data use and such which works fantastic. So goes to show that companies are looking more seriously at the platform itself. Im pretty sure while its still not for a while the PSP would be phased out before the PS3. Seeing how the vita emulates the PSP software just fine also can give companies a chance to still make sales of their PSP titles if they go through the bit of initial effort to get a digital copy up and running.

Yeah but I was talking about at this moment in time.
Sony just launched their fourth playstation console in their home market to little fanfare

Regardless of whether it's less than stellar performance thus far is due to their own failure to secure compelling software, I have a hard time believing people like Shu and Kaz don't find it a bit demoralizing that the Japan market no longer holds the same excitement for their products

As I said in a previous Media Create thread, PS4 needs to go through this difficult year in Japan to build up a userbase.

Japanese devs won't shift from PS3 if there isn't anybody to sell to.

Chicken and egg.

If you look at the past with the type of games that came out with the system compared to what we had with the PS4 they really did it to themselves.

They say other companies were not willing to go on board and whatnot initially, but the other part is apparently they were not able to convince them to do so.

Not the smartest thing having a bunch of multiplat stuff instead of actual exclusive.

There were certainly people who believed the PS4 to be the second coming of the PS2 or something like that, but that was probably overinflated by new entrants into the thread that weren't familiar with the sales situation. Most of the informative and level-headed members were talking about the likelihood of a failed PS4 launch for months.

Code:
Jump! Super Stars	261,692
			31,658 (293,350)
			25,619 (318,969)

Jump! Ultimate Stars	169,740
			75,810 (245,550)
			59,804 (305,354)

J-Stars Victory Vs	209,644
			46,389 (256,033)
			23,441 (279,474)
Still showing similar legs to Superstars despite the tax hike, but still a pretty sharp drop. I think by next week we'll have a good idea of what sort of legs it will ultimately have.
Should've kept it 2D.

I'm sorry

Oh I certainly believe much of the failure comes from Sony. How hard could it be to make a new hot shots golf seriously?

But I still think that at the end of the day even if they accept that it's still disappointing. T

No doubt about it. Problem is too they couldnt really create any hype as all the titles for the most part were western games, which doesnt exactly drive the market here. Hell look at how most of the time commercials were Knack and Killzone. Something wrong right there. The Japanese commercials that is.

at the same time am sure companies are dick punching themselves currently seeing how much it sold worldwide and if they had jumped on board with something / make the west launch window they would have been rolling in cash just because. well not exactly, but getting income no doubt from sales.

Correct.

However,Japanese developers need the PS4 to be successful in their native country as their operating margins are greater there - until then, they will continue releasing content on previous gen (PS3, Vita, 3DS).

The way the Japanese launch for PS4 played out makes me feel like there were European hands all over it. I'm not saying its Andrew House's fault, but it's probably Andrew House's fault

3rd parties are playing an odd game though. If they are waiting to jump to PS4 until the install base is healthier than they may in fact make themselves irrelevant by not helping transition their userbase to the new console or forever be stuck catering to the PS3 and PSV as users slowly transition to other areas for their entertainment [mobile, hostess bars...]

The thing is Andrew House seems to be pretty in touch with things not to mention does presentations in the native language that shows he knows the culture pretty well and things like that go a long way. Guy was pretty open too with reasons as why the JP launch was delayed. Which he was right about seeing the kind of lineup we had. Am pretty impressed with House so far.

Do think that its just a huge mass of problems that caused the poor launch and not just set to a single entity.

You're probably right as I haven't had too much experience with how house operates. It's disappointing that we're in for the continued irrelevancy of consoles in all forms in Japan. Maybe if we're lucky Nintendo's next handheld will be interesting

Truthfully nintendo shouldnt release another handheld for a while seeing how they have a pretty good thing currently. Not to mention its not like the market really wants another after having been invested in the DS / DSi / 3DS. People would be more likely to just say fuck it and wander over to their smart phones instead if nintendo was to drag out another handheld next year for example.

Am sure the devs wouldnt be too amused either considering its a whole new risk. With an unproven marketshare that is going up against smartphones in full blast now.

At least with the 3ds now its fairly powerful and has a good userbase.

Hmm I don't quite expect their next handheld imminently but as it stands the 3DS seems to be the only one of 4 new consoles to be relevant at all in Japan so far. Vita is picking up I guess after like 2 years? But I don't think the 3DS can slow the transition to mobile alone, I simply meant I was hopeful that Nintendo's next handheld might somehow prove more compelling even though all logic would naturally be against it given current trends.

SAO S2 will start in the summer iirc so that game might have legs.
The first one sold out for a long ass time on the PSP and going off of that with how the Vita version has a lot of improvements and MP this one might do the same.

The LE versions sold out pretty quick too already at various locations.

Nowhere really. Since its not like there are that many Japanese devs who produce actual games on the PC. Most of the hardcore crowds anyways just played a lot of western titles or the falcom stuff that was released. There are other companies out there, but seriously its not that big of a number. And this is stuff that Id call actual games and not eroge related titles.

Its more the companies are making them irrelevant by not putting in actual effort keeping up with the tech or just wanting to half ass things and expect people to shell out for it. Or they start whorring out their IPs to devs overseas in hopes of hitting it big with the Western market, which is quite hit or miss.

Right now everyone seems to be more focused on profits rather than making games unfortunately. The larger companies. Thankfully the smaller ones are still doing what they do, but the quality of the products they bring out isnt what the majority of what "modern gamers" want. So they remain niche. Unless there is some sort of miracle like with what happened for From Software and Demons Souls which lead into the Dark Souls series. Though its more people just finding their roots, since From Software really did nothing different as the design MO is what they have always been doing.

Anyways there are a lot more problems going on that people realize. Ill just stop now since for the most part posts like these are a huge fucking waste of my time as hardly anyone actually pays attention to it.
Amen.

Japanese console market is really dead. Anecdotally, I have some friends who work in Japan and from them it seems like nobody really play video game anymore. Handheld gaming becomes very less visible in public. Console gaming is considered as Otaku's toys. Everyone just sticks with their phones and plays stupid LINE games. Japan need drastic change. A change that might not be applicable to the rest of the world.
Sounds like you have friends who have no idea of whats going on.

As I said in a previous Media Create thread, PS4 needs to go through this difficult year in Japan to build up a userbase.

Japanese devs won't shift from PS3 if there isn't anybody to sell to.

Chicken and egg.
A year or so ago, the same argument was put forth for the Wii U when it was struggling after the initial launch sales bonanza.

How did that work out for them?

This could very well be a repeat of the Wii U situation with drops as low as the infamous 3-4k/week that the Wii U endured before the bundles/price drop. Only this time, the shoe is on the other foot.

Doubt it considering the Wii U situation was caused by the idiocy that always seems to be at the helm within nintendo when it comes to their own home consoles. Happened with the N64, Gamecube, Wii (after its initial flash in the pan) and now the WiiU.

From what we know about Sony they are used to the slow burner starts just that this time they went and fucked up a bit more than usual here in Japan by not having proper exclusive titles ready for the system. Multiplats are most def a double edged sword and it showed with the sales numbers at launch.

I'm hearing this a lot now, is this garbage turning into conventional wisdom?

Its because if you look at how nintendo has been doing shit over the years its basically the same MO over and over and over and over again.

Let the system bleed out slowly, then go announce something new. Shafting everyone else in the process.

Third party makers apparently have caught on also which is why there is not too much third party support either.

The trend is there, the question is have you been paying enough attention to see it or not.

Really dont get why the fuck nintendo keeps on doing that considering whoever is running their handheld division has been doing a pretty good job constantly. Its like night and day with the two sides.
