Maybe I have a different understanding of the words "stabilize" and "dropping a bit below" than you.
Thats possible. I dont think i worded my question good enough i the beging, sorry, but i was wondering if anyone here claimed that the PS4 would never drop below 30k again. The PS4 did after keep selling around 30k and above every week for the last 6 months or so, so if anyone questioned/wondered if it could stabilize around that number further on, i think thats fair. I tried to search in the last month's MC threads, but the only mention i could find about stablizing was Chris talking about yearly Vita sales and Mario Kart 7 sales.

I figured it was, so I just ordered one off of an Amazon retailer today before the announcement. Not sure if they are a trustworthy retailer though, but I waited 6 months for Amazon to restock.
I don't know how scarce supply situation is at the rest of the world but at least in Japan if you wanted to buy Famicom Mini you had many chances to do it, especially last weeks.

At almost every thread you find posts for PS4 30k baseline.

It was mentioned many times before (even from retailer blogs) that PS4 release schedule, following strong first months of the year, is very weak. The period after Golden Week you'll see it and 3DS fighting to stay over 20k, not 30k.

I had been checking but hadn't seen it (not every day), nor did it show up in Amazon's recommended products daily mail for me, even though it is on my wishlist.

Last time I checked Bic they were doing a raffle for them over the weekend, I did not go however cause I never win those and it always ends up a big waste of time for me.

The Snack World will be a game whose performance will be interesting, its coming out on the usual Yokai Watch slot, so maybe no new Yokai for this year, Level 5 might not want attention to go away from it.
Well, in that interview Siliconera translated a while ago, Akihiro Hino mentioned a "break" for Yo-kai Watch this year, so yeah, no new game in 2017 (but that was to be expected, they're still not done with the major updates for YW3. 3.0 was released today, but there's still 4.0 coming).

I could see a "GOTY" edition later this year, with all major updates included and an exclusive medal of some sort.

YW4 could be a July 2018 title.

Splatoon 2's video on Nintendo Japan is the top viewed video from the entire direct WW and Senran Kugura is in second place. Let that sink in, groping and squids is the top two things to come out of the entire direct in terms of content. Arms is still a big question mark in Japan, but once MK8D is out Nintendo will focus a lot more towards advertising it. I just hope they release a demo because if it's really fun to play that's the best way to generate hype around it.

Nintendo Japan:
Splatoon 2 - 410K
Senran Kagura Project - 396K
(I'm guessing majority non-Japanese ;)
Direct - 231K
Splatoon 2 Amiibos - 121K
Arms - 55K

Nintendo US:
Splatoon 2 - 199K
Nintendo 3DS Direct - 145K
Arms - 141K
Monopoly - 106K
Sine Mora EX - 100K

*Nintendo US for some reason broke down the video of the direct into two parts and the Switch part was uploaded a few hours ago.
The Senran Kagura video was shared on reddit and got 6000+ upvotes and lots of comments, memelords love it.

Problem with animal crossing is monetizing it. I don't see people spending 10,000 y in an attempt to get say summer Isabelle over the whale gacha targets in Fate.
Monetizing AC is going to be extremely easy. The huge amount of collectibles is a big reason why the games are popular, so all they need to do is offering shortcuts to buy clothes, items, furniture, etc with IAP.

Also, if they somehow tie the neighbors to purchases somehow (Like, at the start of the game you have, say, 6 animal friends, but you can have more move in, at random, with a in-game-currency. But if you want a specific friend you keep rolling for it or cough up the cash).

Or they can just tie it to the amiibo cards and have the cards support the game.

Wonder if part of the reason for no YW this year is because maybe it's going to switch as well as 3ds? Looking at how yw sales have dropped, it's easy to see how the next one being 3ds only would decline even further. Level 5 potentially giving the series a break to arrest the lowering of interest as well as giving the switch time to develop an existing audience to sell to to try and push yw4 sales up?

Has there been a YW Gacha game yet?

I just searched for "stabilize", so maybe thats why i couldt find much in the previous threads. But sure, i know that people have been talking about it, i'm just wondering if anyone have been adamant about PS4 not dropping below 30k. Like you mention, there are slow period of the year, so every system will go up and down from time to time. Does that mean that no system ever had a baseline? PS4 have been selling around 30k for quite some time, so i think its fair to question how the continuing sales would be at least.

Personally, i think PS4 will be closer to around 20k than 30k in the slower periods this year.

Baseline refers to the minimum. I'm not sure why that means there is no such thing. These are obviously measured within defined time frames. For instance, you're saying the PS4 baseline (minimum) will be 20k in 2017.

Fair enough. I think maybe i had a different interpretation of baseline. I'm thinking more about minimum average, not the absolute minimum. Slower period happends, pricedrop and new models could be announced, usually resulting in big drops before those things are being released/put into effect. In that case its quite easy to be wrong about what the baseline could be on a yearly basis. It wouldnt surprise me if the PS4 drops as low as maybe around 15k in the slowest weeks. Could also be a pricedrop this fall, and theres been a rumor about a new slim model as well.

For a console like PS4, that has no evergreen system sellers, sales depend almost entirely on the "size" of titles releasing on it every week. That's the reason it's difficult to find a steady base like or maintain high sales continually and not occasionally, despite getting so much software support. There cannot be a big release week after week.

What he expects is 5m for DQXI between 3DS/PS4/NSW.

With Switch coming later he sees many buying all versions.

For a console like PS4, that has no evergreen system sellers, sales depend almost entirely on the "size" of titles releasing on it every week. That's the reason it's difficult to find a steady base like or maintain high sales continually and not occasionally, despite getting so much software support. There cannot be a big release week after week.
That is true, but the PS4 did held up quite nicely for about half a year. There wasnt a big release every week, but it had a decent/fairly good lineup spread out in that time frame though.

Epic seems to be doing some good business with Switch game engine licensing in Japan:

Gematsu said:
20 Unreal Engine 4 games in development for Switch in Japan

...

”Unfortunately, there were not any Unreal Engine titles at launch, but in late March, Snake Pass, which was one of the titles playable at GDC, launched in America and Europe, and at the Nintendo Switch Presentation, there were titles such as Shin Megami Tensei," Kawasaki said. ”In Japan, there are about 20 titles being developed that use Unreal Engine, so I think that they'll be announced gradually from here on."

When asked if that number corresponds to Switch titles, Kawasaki said, ”These are titles that use Unreal Engine, for Switch, and are being made in Japan. There may even be more. And now we're gradually moving forward with Switch support for the free version [of Unreal Engine 4]. That way, as long as you have a Switch development license, you will be able to develop for Switch even with the free version."

At the moment, there are only a few announced Japanese titles for Switch that use Unreal Engine 4, including Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Shin Megami Tensei, and presumably Dragon Quest XI (the Switch version has yet to be shown, so we don't know if it's based on the PlayStation 4's Unreal Engine 4 version or the 3DS's 3D/2D version).

Between the 3 versions I think 5 million could definitely happen. That's certainly where I would have been predicting it to end up.

Funny how that turned out. At the beginning of the gen the majority of the Major publishers moved away from Unreal to use their own internal engines. As the gen goes on Japan has embraced in completely and even a major publisher like square ditched their internal engine and is full steam embracing it.

I take it he meant it as a compliment (read: unstoppable), otherwise it can easily be misconstrued as salty :p
Yeah, well, "destructive force" seems like a negative, needlessly combative way to call something that should happen way more often and ideally also drive hardware and other software sales while at it. DQXI doing well would be a win for all dedicated gaming systems and the games for them in Japan. Maybe it's an insinuation that Siliconera added and wasn't in the original?

22./27. [PS4] Grand Theft Auto V (Take-Two Interactive Japan) {2015.10.08} - 3,006 / 254,679
34./38. [PS4] Minecraft: Playstation 4 Edition (Sony Interactive Entertainment) {2015.12.03} - 1,822 / 195,160

Don't these count as evergreen PS4 titles now? Sure they aren't selling as well as 3DS evergreens, but it's a start right?

Edit: Meant to put the PS4 version, accidentally posted the Vita version lol.

Well one of them is a Vita title...

I think the perception got skewed a bit because of the market dynamics around launch.

Unreal Engine 3 wasn't a great engine going forward, and it wasn't going to be a seamless transition like Unreal Engine presumably always will be going forward.

Most publishers were also super nervous about the market, so only their biggest Western internal teams were making games anymore, and a lot of those had been moving to unified tech stacks for a while.

When Unreal Engine 4 was finally up and running in a big way, and smaller developers were able to get contracts and transition, things really got going for them. It also helped that Crytek imploded and Unity proved to be an unideal choice for larger scale games, leaving them as the largely unchallenged best option.

Then of course a few face plants by people who really did want to move internal as you mentioned...

Well, he literally uses '破壊力' which means destructive power.

Brazil - Sao Paulo
30./33. [NSW] Puyo Puyo Tetris S (Sega) {2017.03.03} - 2,300 / 28,800
31./32. [NSW] Dragon Quest Heroes I & II for Nintendo Switch (Square Enix) {2017.03.03} - 2,206 / 41,511

Puyo Puyo numbers are very impressive, at least I thought it would sell wuite less and nice to see that Dragon Quest Heroes I & II still selling.

Just Disgaea and I am Setsuna are nowhere to be seen.

Bad bad bad. =P
I guess he isn't all too worried about the overall market size for dedicated gaming devices in Japan then.
I think you're taking that comment totally the wrong way. I see it like saying that a games sales are explosive. It's not a negative comment. He's just saying that DQXI is going to sell really well.

Evergreen maybe, system sellers no. Many budget releases would be system sellers then. GTA is the closest PS4 has at playing that role.

Where does the Switch version of Puyo stand against the others now?

FFXV's on its way to hit 1 million in Japan. It'll probably achieve it in the next coming months if they do their sales right.

Kind of insane to think FFXV is at 7 million worldwide now. That's an impressive number no matter how you slice it and shows FF is definitely here to stay and people definitely still care.

Of course it's insane since it's not there.
