68% digital sales purchased via retailers.
32% from Nintendo eShop.

It is clear that with enough supply, a huge amount of that 68% of download cards wouldn't have been sold.

That's simply not debatable.
Don't you see that huge amount of download cards Tomodachi sells? So many Famitsu can't count them.

Don't you see that huge amount of download cards Tomodachi sells? So many Famitsu can't count them.
That doesn't tell us anything about eshop sales. Yeah its not as big as Nintendo makes it out to be, but you're giving way too much credit to the shortages as a reason. Once people are familiar with the eshop after using the download cards, its likely they'll just buy directly from the eshop the next time. You can't just compare MC to Famitsu numbers and conclude people aren't buying digital at all.

I don't know - I was referring more globally, although in a MC thread I should be more specific. But with regard to Japan, cumulative/synergistic effect of a core Nintendo fanbase and an expanded audience driven by the novelty and accessibility of the system and its killer app perhaps? I don't think you really dispute that much of NSMB's success on both the DS and the Wii was due to a receptive audience being established by other factors, as the extent of that success will not be replicated on their successors.

I also don't really dispute some brand growth and have noted as such before; but I do think both they (Nintendo's executive), and people on here, overestimated the extent and the stability of that growth.
Oh, being a MC thread I figured this was all about Japan. I should've read back more in the conversation for more context, sorry.

I also don't disagree that massmarket games benefit from an already established massmarket userbase, but retro Mario's heights sort of indicate something well beyond just that. And with NSMB1 specifically, it came early enough in the DS cycle where I think an argument can be made it and the platform also synergystically drove each other (similar to GTA3/PS2 in the west).

As far as the new two games, I think there are more pressing issues than simply userbase dragging them down sales wise. Particularly on 3DS, where "userbase" isn't much of a handicap really and hasn't in any real way held back other "cross over" Nintendo titles like Mario Kart or Animal Crossing. The bigger concern I think is one of uniqueness, ie; launching two very similar sequels (both to each other and to their predecessors) in pretty close proximity had a damaging effect overall sales wise. More differentiation and a wider release gap would've done a lot for the games I think.

But it's that. Many people couldn't get the game retail, so they decided to get the download cards. This is just many things leading to one conclusion.

Third-party sales on a Nintendo system, especially non-casual games on a handheld have always been an issue.
Are you new to Media Create threads? That would be the only explanation for what you posted. This is Nintendo's handheld. You're confusing Nintendo's home console problems with their handheld.

What conclusion is that? I didn't say shortages wasn't a reason, but you're pretty much saying thats the only reason. Its not.

How hard is it to believe a game like AC fits the digital model and would appeal to people? Its not like many people are gonna buy AC just to resell it, so the biggest con of going digital is gone and at the same time they have the game on the go with them all the time.

I think for a lot of people initially, they had gone to the store to purchase a physical copy, ran into a out of stock situation and were convinced by the retailers about the benefit of having such a title digitally. But I think word of mouth on owning it digitally was a larger factor in download card purchasing later on. I don't see any reason to dismiss that.

I dont know why people are bashing the Vita for settling at 15k, it wasnt going to start selling 25k all of a sudden but this is an important step towards that goal. The attach rates are pretty good so far and if they can keep getting the titles out the baseline will only increase along with the already relatively strong software sales.

With the PSP on its way out and the PS3 still too expensive to develop for, the Vita is nicely positioning itself as the third-party system in Japan.
15k units are terrible sales on a weekly basis. They look slightly less terrible because it's Vita and we were used to see sub-10k numbers. And this achievement with a quite big price cut, and a stream of games in a span of a month or so.

Problem is, now PS Vita is basically uncovered until June; and I doubt third parties will start to develop on the platform because they saw a really small weekly increase. If they have to choose, they 3DS on one side, PS3 on the other side (so they can sell worldwide, also on 360) and brower and mobile phones on another side. It's not that Japanese third parties were used to develop on more than three platforms before.

Raod, the hardware numbers are not this week's numbers.
My bad. Thanks for checking.

I'm still reluctant to make it more automatic because I'm thinking Dengeki will stop giving the numbers next week and my work will be in vain. =P

Famitsu 3rd party software year-to-date (not complete; weekly top 30 and stuff):

Code:
3DS	2.71
PS3	2.40
PSP	1.06
PSV	0.55
WII	0.20
WIU	0.10
360	0.02
PS2	0.01

millions of units.

I didn't claim it was the only reason, and I don't think anyone else claimed it was the only reason. It was probably a large contributing factor as to why the digital sales are high for the game.

If buying physical was that important to people, they would have waited. You said a large portion of those digital sales wouldn't have been sold if it wasn't for the shortage and that's not debatable? Says who? You? Of course it's debatable. You're the one making assumptions.

You still have to program in Japanese text, and print copies. When you're selling so little it seems pointless.
Eh, we see many western third parties sell very low numbers, it turns enough of a profit I suppose.

If buying physical was that important to people, they would have waited. You said a large portion of those digital sales wouldn't have been sold if it wasn't for the shortage and thats not debatable? Says who? You? Of couse its debatable. You're the one making assumptions.
I would think having the game is more important than owning it physically. The assumptions aren't baseless. There's no doubt that the shortages drove up digital sales. The same can be said for Fire Emblem: Awakening in NA. I guess I can't say whether it is large or small, but the difference is there.

I wouldn't be arguing with you if you said this in the first place, but you didn't, you said a majority of them would have been physical sales instead. I don't think thats the case, sure shortages drove the digital sales, but I don't think people are deterred from digital as you and Chris make it out to be. Its just in this case, a game like AC fits perfectly well with the digital model, on the go and people aren't gonna be reselling the game any time soon. If this was an RPG (Pokemon would be the biggest exception), I wouldn't doubt for one bit shortages was the biggest reason people bought it digitally. Shortages was the gateway, but it wasn't the biggest or the only reason. 500k digital cards is way too big of a number to simply put to just shortages.

In any case, download cards is a very good way to get Japanese people familiar with digital. It'll only get better as Nintendo just started to take it seriously and its already showing good results.

deathcobra? StreetsAhead? We need the 3DS Download only Japanese All-Time Chart stat! :p

EDIT: Ah, just seen it got released in the West too, so it's probably WW and not just Japan. Still, having the 3DS All-Time Chart would be useful, please!
It's at 7. NSMB2 is at 12, so that sold less than 100000 digitally in Japan.

1. ACNL
2. Pokemon ARS
3. Denpa Ningen RPG
4. 3D Classics Kirby
5. Denpa Ningen RPG 2
6. Pokemon Zenkoku zukan Pro
7. Touch Battle Tank 3D
8. Charisou DX
9. HikuOsu
10. @SIMPLE DL Series Vol.1 THE Misshitsu kara no dasshutsu
11. Puyo puyo!! Mini Version
12. NSMB2
13. DQX O-dekake Moshasu de Battle
14. Shaun the Sheep 3D episode 1
15. The Rolling Western
16. 3D Classics Xevious
17. Hyu~stone
18. @SIMPLE DL Series Vol. 2 THE Misshitsu kara no dasshutsu Gakkou no Kyuukousha-hen
19. Hirari Sakurazamurai
20. @SIMPLE DL Series Vol. 2 THE Misshitsu kara no dasshutsu Celeb na goutei-hen

Since TC, like AC, appeals to an audience (young adult females) that wasn't on 3DS before, but on smartphones, they should indeed be more interested in DD as that's the norm on smartphones. Still not enough to make the top 20 yet.

I noticed that Tomodachi Collection sold over 50.000 units during 33 consecutive weeks since launch, that's a record that it will be extremely hard to beat.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf managed to sell over that amount during 22 consecutive weeks, and Animal Crossing 20. The rest of games are below 20 weeks.

It's worth noting that Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day! despite "only" having sold over 50.000 units during 19 consecutive weeks, it was really close to matching Tomodachi Collection's record. During its first 34 weeks, only in 3 weeks didn't reach that mark (48.211, 49.154 and 44.172). 2 weeks being extremely close, and the week it sold 44.172 units was due to NDS Lite shortages. The new model had just been released there, and Nintendo couldn't meet demand. For example, the following week once NDS Lite had more supply, Braing Age 2 would sell 66.159 units.

Another interesting fact about Tomodachi Collection. Once its sales dropped below 20.000 units, its legs completely collapsed for an evergreen title. It only would sell 500.000 more units, while for example, Animal Crossing sold 2 more million units. That's because sales for this kind of titles are greatly affected by hardware sales, and by 2010 NDS sales were fading away.

People talking about 15k as a new baseline should probably wait a little while and even still a 15k baseline is still horrendous and only 5k above the 10k it was at. Cant wait to see how low Wii U can go consider the lineup they have put together, maybe it can break Vita's low.

Third-party sales on a Nintendo system, especially non-casual games on a handheld have always been an issue.
Uh huh. You're right, 3DS isn't the third party system of choice. If it was, it would have got high-profile Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts, SMT or Dragon Quest games. My mistake.

They don't mention anything regarding region so it might be WW but I think not. Either way, that tank game is around 100k or lower, NSMB2 sold less than that so it is definitely < 100k. How much lower than 100k is anybodies guess though.

Does 3DS have FFX? God Eater 2? PSO2? One Piece Musou 2? Persona 4 G? All these titles are high profile titles not available on 3DS although on other systems.

Also, don't forget Bioshock Infinite VITA in the west! It's gonna be huge!

Definitely agree, we'll probably need another 2-3 weeks to find the baseline. It could be lower and it could easily be a bit higher. Honestly if it stabilises somewhere around 18-20k it is doing ok in the sense that Sony could then get some bigger publishers to test the waters with bigger titles. We'll have to see. Though i do think that if GT Vita doesn't get announced soon (since GT6 is being rumored to be unveiled soon) it shows Sony has given up on the platform, unfortunately. GT is like the only trump card that they have and there are yet to play it.

Re Wii U, I could definitely see it going to 7k a week, but I don't think it'll reach Vita lows.

Why? Vita at least had releases before July last year.
I think Vita lows came in October last year when it hovered around 5k after being release starved for ages (apart from Miku and Persona), so I don't think Wii U will go that low.

I didn't claim it was the only reason, and I don't think anyone else claimed it was the only reason. It was probably a large contributing factor as to why the digital sales are high for the game.
Large factor? It was a huge factor and every data points to it. Animal Crossing had huge supply problems for months. Tomodachi doesn't face these problems and digital sales from download cards are almost zero. It's funny there is an ongoing argument when there are no facts to support the opposite opinion.

So NSMB2's digital sales are under 5% of the total. Interesting.

It depends on if there is a price drop and when software starts to drop. The month of June will be particularly rough for the system.

I thought Vita would reach about 15K after SS and the first price drop, was hoping for a bit more but it's ok if it keeps going.

About the high amount of digital sales at the retailer - they could have been out of stock, which is fair enough that a lot would have preferred to get retail but it's fair to think that a lot were probably convinced (likely by retail staff) in that they wouldn't have to carry the AC cart or swap it out, but would have it always available. I imagine it's the sort of game some people would always want convenient access to anyway with the amount of hours they can put into it.

How much money is Sony losing on Vita?
I don't think we know, and it gets complicated by the memory cards, which is likely what makes them profitable.

but it doesn't really matter. The point some people are making is simply that the price drop hasn't helped much, and possibly hurt Vita's chances. Between the price drop, SS, One Piece, and other software that came at that time, Sony was putting all their chips on the table in hopes of jump starting Vita, and it didn't happen. With these games and the systems first price drop in the rear view, things look quite bleak for Vita. I don't see why it would stabilize at 15k either. After golden week it'll start dropping down to 10-12k I think.

But it does matter. If they're not losing money then they could easily continue it even at the low numbers. That is exactly what Dalthien was suggesting for Wii U, sell it at cost and somehow finish the generation.

As I see it, Sony will keep trying to sell the Vita to existing Playstation brand device owners. With cross plattform, cross play and cross buy/save. If the price drop was made within profitability, it doesn't hurt and helps to sell more of the multiplatform games and services they have for Vita.

The torne app was charting digitally the last few weeks also. Many people bought the PSP as a multimedia device, Vita should appeal to them as well. Watching TV on the go, in HD.

We all know the Vita has very modest sales, but in the end, as long as they're not losing money why should they stop selling it? So the question if they're losing money on the device does matter.
